Workin’ at the car wash - YEAH! (25 photos)

This past weekend, Sootoday.com attended not one but five different car washes throughout Sault Ste. Marie.

We know what you’re thinking: “Just how dirty was your car?”

The car washes weren’t the real reason for this coverage.

It was the schools hosting the car washes that were the highlight.

Five local schools hosted five car washes for five different charities as part of the Community Car Wash for Charity presented by the United Way Youth Empowerment Council, Volunteer SSM, and the Change the World: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge.

Students from White Pines, Central Algoma Secondary, Notre Dame, Superior Heights, and F.H. Clergue spent Saturday cleaning the city’s dirtiest vehicles all for the charity of their choice.

Charities included the Canadian Diabetes Association, ARCH, Humane Society of SSM, Canadian Cancer Society, and the Relay for Life.

“This community car wash event, in its third year, was developed as a means of empowering youth. We give them the tools and resources to run this event and offer our guidance along the way. But ultimately the events success is all their own,” said Danielle Greve, chair of the youth empowerment council.

Students also had the opportunity to showcase their creativity as each school created a theme for their car wash and entertained drivers.

Central Algoma Secondary School students made the commute from Desbarats and hosted their car wash at the Riuniti Banquet Hall.

The Hawaiian-themed car wash made drivers dream of warmer days.

At É.s. Notre-Dame-des-Grands-Lacs, students dressed as pirates swarmed the cars and yelling: “Ahoy, how boot a cARRRRR wash, me matey?”

Superior Heights students, with their lasso and six shooters in hand, yipped and yelled at the corner of North Street promoting the car wash.

White Pines students showed their spirit and dressed in school colors. Go Wolverines!

F.H. Clergue Public School assembled a power-house car wash team of Grades 6 - 8. No dirt survived.

Totals raised for each charity will be announced at the Volunteer Recognition Gala on May 8 at Loplops Gallery.

This gala will recognize the efforts and successes of the Change the World campaign and its volunteers.

The Change the World campaign in partnership with Sault Youth Association will also present the Youth Mural Project on Saturday May 5.

They are currently recruiting high school volunteers.
