World record attempt in lacrosse

The Soo Lacrosse Club will attempt to set a Guinness World Record(TM).

After months of negotiations, Glenn Hrynuik, the president and founder of the Soo Lacrosse Club, has convinced this renowned organization to create a new world record classification.

There are presently two world records for the longest marathon lacrosse game.

Two women teams played for nine hours and two men teams played for 12 hours.

British University players set these records in the United Kingdom in 2009.

"What do the Brits know about lacrosse?" asked Glenn.

North American First Nation people have been playing lacrosse for thousands of years.

Games often lasted several days and were played by thousands of warriors.

Jesuit missionaries recorded several of these events in and around the Sault.

"I began researching the history of lacrosse two years ago for the commemoration of the War of 1812. That is when I got the idea to attempt a world record. The Guinness head offices are in the Britain. At first they did not understand that Canada was the birthplace of lacrosse and that it is still our national summer sport. It took a long time to convince them that having hundreds of players play in the same game was much more representative of the history of this game."

The Soo Lacrosse Club’s spring season starts next week.

In June, all 300 members will play in the same game outdoors on the Rocky Dipetro Field (specific date to be announced).

Glenn goes on to say: "This is a re-creation of a ancient tradition. No one has seen anything like this in almost 200 years. Anyone who knows anything about lacrosse will want to play."

Guinness has sent three pages of rules that have to be followed.

The event has to be electronically recorded from two viewpoints.

Each player must touch the ball at least once.

There can be no stoppages in the play.

The name of each player and how long they played has to be recorded.

This player roster will become part of the world record archive, and may be published in next year’s World Record Book and on their web site.

"I am trying to get the word out to all those players who played lacrosse in the Sault back in the 70’s. This is their chance to live the history we all heard about and to get into the record books," said Glenn. "We can’t let the kids have all the fun!"
