Canadians under 54 years-old hit by Harper budget's OAS cuts

Thursday, March 29, 2012   by: Rick McGee

The Harper government's budget now being tabled changes Old Age Security (OAS) eligibility and benefits for Canadians under 54 years-old.

People over that age will not be subject to OAS changes announced today.

OAS adjustments will be phased in progressively over six years, beginning in 2023.

Canadians now under 50 won't benefit from OAS until they turn 67 as the retirement age eventually moves to that level from 65 by 2029.

Those currently nearing retirement will also be able to defer the start of OAS benefits for up to five years and receive higher allocations when they start collecting at a later date.

OAS currently gives most Canadians 65 and over about $6,000 a year.

Techno-Geek 3/29/2012 6:20:58 PM Report

Eligable for OAS at 67, for those not 54 yet. They're banking on the majority of those "new" seniors don't make it to 67. Fact of the matter is... most people today die while they're still employed.

Its been nice paying for all you old timers on OAS... I'll be dead before I ever see it.

this government is pitty one generation against the other or should I say Older. Lets hope the next election (and new governing party) brings us a reversal of this assine idea.
zzeke 3/30/2012 6:06:09 AM Report

It will not be reversed by any other party deputy dan. As much as other parties will criticize this in public ,they will be high 5ing each other because it wasnt them that created this bs. They will just let it ride.

the conservatives shouldn't be able to pass anything untill their robocalls scandal is cleared up, oh yeah they cut funding to elections canada to investigate them. The governer general should step in and prorougue parliament.

I think the Federal budget was fair and balanced. Even the MPs got there pensions hit. Before they pay 1 dollar and the taxpayer pays 5 dollars. Now the MP pays more and they do not just get the pension after they serve they have to wait to collect. Yes some government jobs are elimenated. But oh well. All levels of government now days have to trim the pork. I do not see were some of you are complaining about. I was expecting deeper cuts. I heard Bob Rae cutting up those that believe in small government. Now there is a man who loves big government.I hope the federal Liberals are smart and get rid of Rae
freedom1 3/30/2012 1:07:43 PM Report

fair and balance ? you been watching too much fox news. we had a $13 billion dollar surplus before the conservatives now we have a $33 billion deficit. Helps cross border shopping, that helps the Usa more than canada but Harper wants us to be like them anyways, lets spend some more billions on jet fighters or submarines just in case theres a war. the only countries staring wars these days is USA and its coalition. How does this budget help inequality? It just makes those that are rich richer and the poor poorer. And even though you think your rich your not.
