Government of Canada investment to support economic development in the East Algoma Region

BLIND RIVER - The Honourable Tony Clement, minister for FedNor, today announced a Government of Canada investment of $157,500 to support community-based economic development initiatives in the East Algoma region.

“The Government of Canada works with local organizations, such as the East Algoma Community Futures Development Corporation, to ensure that businesses and communities have the tools they need to succeed,” said Minister Clement. “Today’s announcement will help strengthen the economy of East Algoma and promote long-term growth and prosperity throughout the region.”

The FedNor funding will enable the East Algoma Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) to fund a variety of community-based economic development projects in its service area.

Based in Blind River, the East Algoma CFDC is one of 24 such organizations funded by FedNor to serve Northern Ontario businesses and communities.

CFDCs are not-for-profit organizations, each run by a board of local volunteers and staffed by experienced business and economic development professionals.

“The East Algoma CFDC is committed to playing a leadership role in the development of the regional economy,” said Vyrn Peterson, chair of the East Algoma CFDC. “This FedNor investment clearly demonstrates confidence in our organization and will help strengthen the economic outlook for the communities and businesses we serve.”

Funding for this project was provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports initiatives that strengthen community economic development, enhance business growth and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
