Something stinks. Warning: Gross photos

Neighbours and passers-by in the laneway behind 105 Wellington West are raising a stink about the stench. What looks like mud in the photo above, isn't. It's dog poop. Feces, excrement - what ever it's called, it stinks.

Neighbours and passers-by in the laneway behind 105 Wellington West are raising a stink about the stench.

What looks like mud in the photo above, isn't.

It's dog poop.

Feces, excrement - what ever it's called, it stinks.

And there is an awful lot of it in the backyard at 105 Wellington West.

It's been piling up for a very long time.

Like, more than a year.

Neighbours who don't want to be identified for fear of the dogs that made the mess and the dog owners who didn't clean it up, came to SooToday.com after frustrations with the City and the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society.

City by-law 87-125 says that every person who owns or harbours a dog shall forthwith clean up and dispose of any excrement left by the dog on any property, public or private, in the City of Sault Ste. Marie.

Neighbours and people who use the laneway where the piles of excrement are spilling on to have complained to the City.

SooToday.com was unable to reach the appropriate person for comment at the City today, but a spokesperson at the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society did give us some general information.

Natalie said the Humane Society is not able to disclose specifics on any case but, the standard procedure in a complaint about dog excrement, representatives will visit the subject address and warn the dog owners to clean up the poop or face a fine.

"If it isn't done in a certain amount of time," she said, "then we'll contact the City."

That time period isn't specific.

Basically, if there are more complaints or a Humane Society representative returns to the subject property and the poop is still stinking up the neighbourhood, then the Humane Society will call in the City By-Law Officer.

Area residents are at their wits end after calling the Humane Society, and writing letters to the City in attempts to have this resolved over the past year, but there are more and bigger dogs in the building at 105 Wellington and the pile of poop has become a hellish hill of toxic stench.

The residents wonder why the landlord has allowed the pile to grow to this proportion and wish they could send the property owners some photos with smell-o-vision in hopes that they can do what the city and Humane Society have so far failed to do.

Many seniors live in the area and SooToday.com witnessed two youngsters trudge right through the poop this morning while documenting the situation.
