This week SooToday.com was invited to the Art Gallery of Algoma to take part in the creation of a giant puppet.

The Puppetry Workshop was presented by Torontonian Sean Frey and offered in partnership with the Art Gallery of Algoma and National Youth Arts Week which is scheduled from May 1 to May 7, 2012.

“This workshop is part of our mentoring initiative,” said National Youth Arts Week Community Coordinator Rihkee Strapp. “We’re offering these workshops to youth (and the young at heart) to prepare them for the week long activities we have planned in May.”

Designer, performer, community artist, and puppeteer Sean Frey was more than happy to make the trip to Sault Ste. Marie to offer his unique teachings regarding the creation and animation of a giant interactive puppet.

“We quickly decided to break into groups to create different sections of the puppet,” said Frey. “Using this exquisite corpse method, the teams will design the elements of the puppet they want while working together to ensure the puppet remains structurally sound and in proportion.”

If this is a demonstration of things to come during National Youth Arts Week in May, we are certainly in for a treat.

Events for National Youth Arts Week are being added daily, learn more by visiting their website or Facebook.
