MP Bryan Hayes travels to Washington, DC and West Virginia with Fisheries and Oceans Committee

SAULT STE. MARIE (March 13, 2012) -  Last week, MP Bryan Hayes was part of a multi-party tour of a closed containment salmon aqua-culture research facility in West Virginia known as the Fresh Water Research Institute. 

He also met in Washington with various American officials and scientists who have been studying closed containment aquaculture for 20 years.

Mr. Hayes will use the knowledge he gained to assist in the development of a committee report and subsequent recommendation to the government on the viability of closed containment salmon aquaculture.

Closed containment aquaculture is a form of fish farming done entirely on land. 

The Fisheries and Oceans Committee has been studying the viability of this technology for the last six months.

Salmon aquaculture in Canada currently directly employs approximately 11,000 people.

“I found this trip extremely informative and I look forward to using the knowledge I gained to ensure the government has adequate legislation in place to promote safe sustainable aquaculture resulting in job creation,” said MP Hayes.  “I was also glad to meet the hard working staff of the Canadian Embassy and gained valuable knowledge on what their role is in the United States. This knowledge will help me in my role as both Steel and Border Caucus chair.”

MP Bryan Hayes was elected as the Conservative Chair of the Border Caucus on February 6, 2012. 

He is also in the transitional phase of becoming chair of the Steel Caucus.
