Two men fined $3,750 after public report of unlawful deer hunting
(March 12, 2012) - Two Echo Bay men have been fined a total of $3,750 for shooting a white-tailed deer from the road onto private property without the proper validation tag.
Michael Siemers and Esko Kastikainen both pleaded guilty and were each fined $1,000 for unlawfully hunting a white-tailed deer without a tag for an antlerless deer.
Additionally, Siemers was fined $1,000 for discharging a firearm across a roadway and $750 for trespassing to hunt.
Court heard that on the morning of November 13, 2011, local hunters witnessed a truck stop, and the passenger Siemers get out and shoot over the hood across the approaching lane and into a private field at two female white-tailed deer.
Siemers jumped back into the truck and Kastikainen drove away.
Local hunters gave chase, getting a licence plate number and reported the incident to a local conservation officer.
Both Siemers and Kastikainen returned to the area voluntarily and met with the conservation officer.
Neither man possessed a licence to hunt antlerless deer.
Justice of the Peace Phil Stanghetta heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sault Ste. Marie, on March 1, 2012.
