Four people and one OPP officer break through ice - no injuries

LAIRD TWP - Earlier today officers from the Ontario Provincial Police-Sault Ste Marie Detachment along with rescue personnel from the Sault Ste Marie Fire Department and Sault Ste Marie ambulance responded to a report of a snowmobile and ATV breaking through the ice near Pine Island in Laird Twp.

Initial reports indicated that four persons, one being a two year old child broke through the ice while travelling on their machines.

They managed to get back onto the ice and call for help.

Upon police arrival a local resident and the officer were successful in rescuing three of the four victims using a canoe.

One of the three was the two year old child.

However, the fourth could not be reached and remained stranded on the ice.

While rescuing the three, the officer involved also broke through the ice.

The officer managed to get back to shore safely.

A short time later the Sault Ste Marie Fire Department arrived with their rescue airboat and safely rescued the still stranded woman.

All parties involved were treated by ambulance and released a short time later.

The Ontario Provincial Police would like to remind everyone that with the warmer weather arriving today and impending warmer weather still to come, ice on our waterways are becoming unpredictable and caution should be adhered to when travelling on them.
