Many lost Transcom jobs could be picked up locally

There appears to be some good news for those Transcom Global employees who will be losing their jobs when the call centre closes its doors on June 29.

Sault Ste. Marie MPP David Orazietti said talks with Employment Ontario have led him to believe other call centres in town will soon have openings.

"From what I understand, a substantial number of those jobs lost are positions that will be hired on by other centres in town," said Orazietti.

“Obviously, the goal is to keep people working in the Sault and the Ontario government is going to do everything they can to try and make that happen.”

Mayor Debbie Amaroso confirmed the Economic Development Corporation will be looking into the situation and feels the departure further proves the need to branch out the local job market.

“The hope is those jobs will get picked up,” said Amaroso. “But this is just another example of why we need to continue diversifying our economy so that there’s always opportunity for people."

Amaroso said the city is always looking at ways to bring jobs into town and added the city is focused on a number of possibilities.

“We’ve got the Alternative Energy Strategy in front of us and that could create upwards of 700 jobs for the community and we’re still working on St. Mary’s Paper,” she said.

Also on the job front, MP Bryan Hayes says he’s continuing to push the federal government for government investment in a new regional public harbour.

Currently, they are waiting for the results of a feasibility study before making the next move.

“If the business case shows the results I believe it will and if we can get both levels of government on board, we can create anywhere between 700-1500 jobs for the city,” Hayes said.

The feasibility study – currently being done by KPMG - is expected to be completed in mid-to-late April.
