Fines issued in Adelaide Street fire

The building owner and a tenant have each been issued $235 fines for smoke alarm violations in the Adelaide Street fire that occurred in the early morning of February 19, 2012.

The investigation conducted by Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services revealed that the owner of the building failed to ensure that smoke alarms were installed in the second floor apartment.

The investigation also showed that the tenant of the main floor apartment had removed the smoke alarm that had been previously installed.

“Working smoke alarms save lives. These fines are minor compared to the cost of serious injury or loss of life that is sometimes paid when smoke alarms are not installed or have been disabled,” says Assistant Chief Paul Milosevich. “In the middle of the night when people are sleeping, that’s when fires are most deadly.”

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services reminds all residents that working smoke alarms must be installed and maintained on each level of a home or apartment and adjacent to all sleeping areas.
