Multiple cooking fires

Over the past several days Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to similar fires, both as a result of unattended cooking and utilizing cooking oils.

During the evening hours of February 19, Fire Services responded to a 911 call in the 100 block of Simon Ave.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered light smoke venting from the single family dwelling.

The owner of the home was cooking utilizing oil that eventually flashed as a result of overheating.

The owner extinguished the fire and called 911.

The fire caused moderate heat damage to the overhead fan and light smoke damage throughout the home.

During the late evening hours of February 21, Fire Services responded to a 911 call in the 700 block of Dyment St.

Upon arrival, fire fighters encountered flames and heavy smoke emitting from the two unit residential occupancy.

The tenants of the building had escaped without injury.

The tenant of the upper unit was attempting to cook french fries in a pot of cooking oil.

The oil reached the “auto ignition” temperature which resulted in the fire.

The building received extensive heat and smoke damage throughout.

Fire Services recommends using a thermostatically controlled device when utilizing oils as a cooking medium.

More than 30 percent of SSM Fire Services incidents are a result of cooking.

Be reminded to never leave cooking unattended and the best way to extinguish a cooking oil fire is to put a lid on it.
