This past weekend, the Sault Youth Association presented their introductory workshop in plaster mold making hosted by local artist Ingrid Dabringer as part of the Fresh Art Project.

The workshop started out with a simple exercise to teach the 10 in attendance about the use of negative space when making plaster molds or casts.

Ingrid poured cold plaster into the hands of the attendees and informed them that plaster work is as much about science as it is art.

"Once the plaster's setting agent takes effect the plaster will heat up," said Dabringer. "This is a chemical reaction between the water and the plaster, and soon the plaster will heat up even more as it hardens."

When the plaster hardened enough, the attendees pulled theirs hands away to reveal molds created from the negative space between their hands which resembled sea shells [pictured].

The Fresh Art Project provides youth aged 12-25 with free professional art instruction.
