On Wednesday, February 15, the United Way of Sault Ste. Marie and District hosted a luncheon at Casino Sault Ste. Marie to update and celebrate the current success of the 2011 Campaign.

This annual campaign is a fundraising initiative for the United Way and 21 member agencies that provide 48 community programs which assist people and families of Sault Ste. Marie as well as the Algoma District.

This luncheon provided the stage to recognize and showcase the donations and funding the campaign has received to date.

“We have a high goal for this campaign, the highest to date,” said the 2011 Campaign Chair Bud Wildman, pictured with Vice-Chair Jodi Nastor (right) and United Way Resource Development Manager Maureen Dodd (left).

The 2011 Campaign had set a high target of $1.3 million.

The funds raised go towards providing member agencies with leverage and support to continue offering their invaluable services to the community at large.

Member agencies include Sault Search and Rescue, Victim Services Algoma, Women in Crisis (Algoma) Inc., and many more.

“Currently we are sitting just under our goal and I’d like to strongly encourage our contributing partners to submit their donations and support before the campaign ends in March,” said Wildman. “These funds are essential to the continuation and sustainability of the 48 programs offered by these agencies.”

“We believe there is no such thing as a small donation. In fact, over 50 percent of donations are raised through individuals participating in our payroll deduction program at their place of employment. Some donate as little as $1 per pay period but it all adds up and makes a significant difference.”

Highlighted donations include:

  • BMO - $4,332.00 (Corporate gift and employee campaign)
  • Pollard Banknote - $7,582 (Employee campaign)
  • Sault College - $12,156 (Employee campaign)
  • Agero - $14,186 (Employee campaign)
  • Casino SSM - $16,554 (Employee campaign)
  • Huron-Superior District Catholic School Board - $18,475 (Employee campaign)
  • OLG - $50,762 (Employee campaign)
  • Essar Steel - $352,000 (Includes pledges from retirees, employees, and corporate combined)

“We thank all that have led to the success of this Campaign and the betterment of our community,” said Wildman.
