Algonquin Hotel owners to receive Municipal Heritage Committee Award

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Sault Ste. Marie Municipal Heritage Committee is pleased to announce Martin Fiser, owner of the Algonquin Hotel, as the recipient of the 2011 Municipal Heritage Committee Heritage Award.

This award is offered annually by the Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie in recognition of contributions to the preservation, restoration and enhancement of the city’s heritage resources.

Mr. Martin Fiser, along with parents Pilar and Roman Fiser have restored the Algonquin Hotel for contemporary use while maintaining both the heritage features and the structural integrity of the building.

Upgrades to the building have improved the streetscape and neighbourhood in general.

Built in 1888 by businessman and long-time mayor William Plummer, the Algonquin Hotel is of architectural significance and its history is interwoven with the development of the City of Sault Ste. Marie.

The Hotel stands as a monument to the robustness of the Victorian architecture in the use of brick masonry and contains a prominent painted metal cornice to the west and south elevations.

The Algonquin is the sole surviving member of the large city hotels constructed close to the turnoff the century to cater to the young, rapidly expanding industrial centre.

The award will be presented at the February 21 City Council meeting.

Congratulations to Martin Fiser - Algonquin Hotel, recipient of the 2011 Sault Ste. Marie Municipal Heritage Committee Heritage Award!
