Trustees approve new secondary school name

(Sault Ste. Marie) - The excitement of a new Catholic secondary school to be constructed in Sault Ste. Marie continues.

Trustees of the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board approved the name of the new facility at its meeting on Wednesday evening.

The Board of Trustees heard from the school naming committee whose role was to recommend a name for the new Catholic secondary school.

Thanks to 240 submissions from the community, a recommendation by the committee was reached after careful consideration.

As the committee looked to the future, it also took into account the past with an eye to preserving the storied tradition of Catholic education in Sault Ste. Marie.

With all these factors in mind, the committee agreed with the vast majority of respondents that the Board’s new Catholic secondary school should be named St. Mary’s College.

“We were very impressed with the number of submissions we received and the passion in which most of them conveyed how important the name St. Mary’s College is to them, the Catholic community and to the city of Sault Ste. Marie,” said Trustee John Caputo, member of the School Naming Committee.

Plans are in the works to integrate aspects of the current St. Mary’s College, St. Basil Secondary, Holy Angels Learning Centre and the former Mount St. Joseph College into the new St. Mary’s College.

“Maintaining the name St. Mary’s College will reaffirm the desire shown by the Basilian Fathers and Sister of St. Joseph to enrich the lives of all Catholics through education. It is a tradition that began over a century ago and flourishes to this day,” said Trustee Leslie Cassidy-Amadio, member of the School Naming Committee.

“We know that this is a decision that could have been a tough one for the committee. But the stakeholders involved made it much easier for them by showing their passion to keep the name “St. Mary’s College” alive. We thank them for their input and the committee for their efforts. This is a great day for our Board and Catholic education,” said HSCDSB Chair Laurie Aceti.

A committee will be formed in the future with the task of creating a school motto, mascot and colour scheme.

Ground breaking for the new St. Mary’s College is expected to take place in the spring of 2013 at the 20 acre site near the intersection of Pine Street and Second Line East.
