Local boys keep the gold in Sault Ste. Marie

SAULT STE. MARIE - Local residents, Cameron Basham, Alex Lake and Jaime Lake-Schraeder (pictured), formed the 2310 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps biathlon team that placed first at this past weekend’s Provincial Championship held at the Algoma Rod and Gun Club.

Jamie also won silver in Youth Individual Race on Sunday.

Cadet Jessie Gravel, 696 Air Cadets, Blind River brought home a bronze in the Senior Female Individual Race.

Competitors had to ski three 1.5 km loops on some of Canada’s most technical Nordic ski terrain separated by two shooting bouts at 45mm targets positioned 50 meters away.

Despite the bitter cold temperatures these athletes faced this weekend, they each pushed themselves to their limit to make their hometown - and host town - proud.

“Biathlon is a sport that challenges you both physically and mentally,” offered Alex Lake when asked what he liked most about the sport. “Plus the chance to travel to many places in Canada.”

And travel they will; Alex, Jaime, Cameron and Jessie will join 15 other elite cadets to form Team Ontario at the National Biathlon Championships being held in Martock, Nova Scotia March 3 to 10, 2012.
