Surprise wedding. Irresistibly impulsive and romantic

“Truthfully, we invited you all here under false pretenses. Sorry, you’ve been bamboozled and hoodwinked, all of you. To be honest today isn’t our engagement party; it’s actually our wedding day.“

That’s what I said to our family and friends on August 20, 2011 at Loplops Lounge.

That day was to be our engagement party, a chance for our families to meet and the opportunity to celebrate our “eventual” marriage which we were saying was to be at least a year away.

When we decided to get married we wanted to do something low-key and not incredibly elaborate.

So we set in motion a scheme to get our family and friends in the same place and even announced a false ‘save the date’ as to not draw any attention to our charade.

At Loplops Lounge we had several of our friends playing music, local catering, and a silent auction of donated art.

It wasn’t until later in the evening when I was announcing the successful bidders of the auction that I informed all in attendance of our deception.

After the announcement the room went silent. Our family and friends resembled statues captured in a pose of surprise and disbelief.

The silence hadn’t broken until I whispered into the microphone, “Ummm I’m serious” and was relieved once I heard the reaction to be positive and full of applause and cheer.

I asked my bride’s parents to meet her at the far end of the building and asked my parents to stand with me up on stage.

My mother and step father came up to the stage but I couldn’t find my Dad who had travelled all the way from Kenosha Wisconsin for the party. Running through the lounge I found him standing off to the side unaware of what was going on as he hadn’t heard my announcement.

Oblivious of this I grabbed his arm and started to drag him across the lounge and to the stage where he was met with extreme shock seeing the minister and hearing  the music start to play as my soon-to-be wife who had changed into her wedding gown started to walk with her parents down the aisle.

After the ceremony we were bombarded by family and friends congratulating us on our marriage and our trickery.

For us, the perfect wedding day wasn’t about having extravagant or lavish features like a chocolate fountain with fruit skewers, or being escorted down the aisle atop a palomino, or being decked out in designer wedding garb. It was simply about being surrounded by the people we love and the people who love us.

Love is impulsive and surprising. That’s exactly how we wanted our wedding day to be.
