This past Saturday Latin Lovers united for Fiesta! A Spicy Latin Party at the Water Tower Pub presented by the Algoma Latin Association and the City of Sault Ste. Marie Celebrate 100!

The themed night consisted of drink specials, tapas, vibrant Latin music and an introductory salsa lesson courtesy of association president Ana Vargas (shown, far left alongside members and event organizers of the ALA).

Over 20 couples packed the dance floor for the full-hour lesson to kick-start the night.

This free event provided a unique cultural experience for all in attendance, however for most it was a reminder of home.

"We have many newcomers here tonight," said Vargas. "We have people from Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic."

The Algoma Latin Association (ALA) was established in 2009 in response to the growing number of Hispanic immigrants in Sault Ste. Marie.

For years, companies such as Tenaris and Essar have been attracting Latin workers and their families to the Sault.

"We saw a great need to start this association to bring the Spanish-speaking community together and also bringing the community closer to our newcomers,” said Vargas.

"Along with other organizations, we coordinate with newcomers who have yet to travel to Canada from Latin-American. We assist them with housing, employment and education before they arrive."

The association hosts monthly film screenings.

The next movie screening - of Forasteros - is scheduled for Thursday, February 23 at the Sault Community Career Centre, 503 Queen Street, at 6:45 p.m.
