Phase two of campus rebuild to begin

SAULT STE. MARIE - Demolition of the Outback will begin shortly as we clear grounds for the construction of the College’s new Student Health and Wellness Centre.

Ellis Don, who was awarded the contract for construction of the new building and will be using local contractors to construct the centre, estimates substantial completion of the impressive centre by March 31, 2013.

A ground-breaking ceremony will be taking place in the near future.

“The new Sault College Student Health and Wellness Centre is a much-needed facility on campus that will serve as an effective training and educational resource,” states Dr. Ron Common, Sault College president. “As we say good-bye to the Outback and the many cherished memories experienced there by our students, alumni and staff, we welcome the new state-of-the-art centre to campus. With its academic labs, fitness rooms and a gymnasium, the Student Health and Wellness Centre will address student needs and accommodate growth in varsity sports and academic programming, as well as promote a healthier lifestyle for students.”

The existing Outback Student Life Centre was built in early 1994.

In June, David Orazietti, MPP, on behalf of the Honourable John Milloy, Ontario minister of training, colleges and universities, announced that Sault College had received $4 million towards Phase Two of campus redevelopment.

The Sault College students showed their support by contributing $3 million of their own funds to the project.

The remaining amount is to be raised by the College’s Inspiring Growth capital campaign.

“As students of Sault College, we are excited to see the building of the new Student Health and Wellness Centre underway,” states Tyler Epp, Sault College Students’ Union president. “This exciting addition to campus will enrich student life for all Sault College learners and the greater community.”

The City of Sault Ste. Marie has also voted in favour of supporting a capital contribution totalling one million dollars towards Sault College’s campus redevelopment initiatives.

The new Student Health and Wellness Centre will play an important role in helping to provide Northern Ontario with well-trained health professionals.
