NEWS RELEASE

****************************
On Friday, December 23 2011, the Sault Ste. Marie Police and Fire Services completed an enforcement action at an event at the Polish Hall on Goulais Avenue.

This event was organized as a Christmas celebration and tickets were sold for the event by local youth.

The enforcement action was undertaken in response to identified issues at a similar event that was held this past fall, where the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service received several complaints from members of the public after that event.

Upon receiving information of this up coming event officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s High School Liaison Office met with event organizers and advised them of the planned enforcement.

On December 23 officers charged 13 persons with being under 19 years of age and consuming liquor, one person was also charged with being intoxicated in a public place.

Three persons were also charged with offences under the Highway Traffic Act.

Persons arrested and/or charged were between the ages of 14 and 17 years.

A noticeable reduction in offences was noted at this latest event due to the partnership between the Algoma District School Board, the Huron Superior Catholic District School Board, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and the event organizers.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to thank the Algoma District School Board and the Huron Superior Catholic District School Board for their assistance in being proactive within the schools by getting the message to students about the issues surrounding these events.

This collaborative approach was based on the principals of education, deterrence and enforcement between the partnered agencies.
