The following message from a loyal reader living in Toronto is one of many special greetings that SooToday.com will be publishing over the holidays.

If you're a former Sault resident now living 200 or more kilometres away, SooToday.com would be delighted to post your 800-word-or-less message.

***************************
This is perhaps the fifth year I've written 800 words or less for Sootoday.com.

I look forward to this.

It gives me a good reason to reflect on The Soo, Algoma, Laird Township, Bar River and all the other locations up there that hold such great memories.

My family never made it to the Soo this year.

Our cottage in Parry Sound is as close as we got. However, I promise that I read all of the obituaries and the occasional story in Sootoday.

The dastardly deeds your criminals commit are eerily similar to our Toronto crimes but it's more fun to read when it's happening to someone else.

I learned that in 2011 Sooite and friend Jack Squire moved his law practice to Nunavut.

I think he said something about not being able to tolerate the Soo weather.

He must have boarded the wrong flight.

My 80+ year old Aunt Girlie from “down the line” still keeps the rest of the family informed as to the goings on and so I'll leave it to her to write her own 800 word essay.

A friend of the Fremlin family from many many years ago, Lynn Hollingsworth died recently.

I recall the Hollingsworth name being prominent in our family discussions growing up in the 1950's.

My understanding is they were more connected to my father's ancestors than with mine.

I think it was Lynn's dad (Lin?) who returned from Africa and hosted a reception at his house where he shared many photos of his trip.

This was in the 1950's and if memory serves me right, this was a very big deal in everyone's lives.

Africa was some far off place that was at the very least a difficult and uncomfortable place to visit.

It could have been Mars as far as we were concerned. He must have done some hunting on that trip.

As the NHL procrastinates on the concussion issue, I've been thinking of how many concussions I must have received while playing for the Bar River Wolves some 50 years ago.

This was before helmuts were available of course.

Here's a photo of the team taken in the old CJIC studio circa 1960 or thereabouts.

I'm the goofy looking kid in the back row with a smirk on his face (must be the fallout form one of my concussions).

I remember a few of the faces on the team including my cousin Tom (kid in the front row with a smirk, must be a family trait), Eslton Evoy, his dad and coach Don Evoy, the other coach Mr. Cook, Douglas Rix... after that my memory fades.

Maybe someone out there can fill in the blanks.

As always, we miss the north and will visit again soon. We wish everyone there a happy and healthy 2012.

Duncan Fremlin,

Toronto, Ontario.
