OPP K9 unit apprehends suspect after high speed chase

(SOUTH PORCUPINE) – The Elliott Lake OPP has a male person in custody and facing numerous charges stemming from a string of incidents involving a suspected stolen vehicle from Sault Ste Marie.
 
During the early morning hours of December 24th, OPP officers with the Blind River detachment attempted to stop a 2005 Kia passenger vehicle for a traffic violation. 
 
The driver refused to stop and evaded police and fled the area towards Elliott Lake.
 
A short while later, Elliott Lake OPP officers attempted to stop the same vehicle when it was observed in their area. 
 
The driver again refused to stop for police and eventually abandoned the vehicle in the town of Elliott Lake.  
 
The vehicle was located by the OPP and a foot pursuit was undertaken by OPP officers in the town of Elliott Lake.
 
An OPP K-9 unit was deployed in the search for the suspect.
 
The suspect was apprehended by the OPP at approx 7 a.m. this morning and remains in police custody.
   
The OPP is in the midst of confirming the man’s identity so that numerous criminal charges including Flight From Police contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada can be laid against him.  
 
The suspect remains in OPP custody and will be held for a bail hearing to be held in Sault Ste Marie.  
 
The vehicle involved remains in police custody at this time so that it can be subjected to forensic examination.
