The iconic Princess Theatre sign was taken down Tuesday morning.

Marc Muto, current owner of the former Princess Theatre building on Gore Street, told SooToday the sign was removed for safety reasons and because it was starting to show its age.

It took a work crew from Superior 7 Advertising about two hours to remove the sign.

Muto said the sign will be put in storage and may be used again.

Muto is currently performing maintenance work on the structure.

It is not yet known what plans are in store for the building.

The Princess Theatre opened in 1917 and was remodelled in 1939.

After its days as a theatre were done, the building was converted to nightclub in the late 1990s.

That business closed and the building has been vacant for over 10 years.
