Build Your Career Around Green EducationMonday, December 02, 2013 by: Greener Ideal
Many people who want to “go green” begin at home. They may start by changing the types of cleaners they use in the home, eating foods that promote good health or finding ways to use solar energy. Going green at home is fairly easy for many people because they are in their own space and have control over what comes in. For some people, being in a workplace that is not eco-friendly can be very difficult. More and more people are beginning to look for jobs that promote an eco-friendly lifestyle.
Locally Grown Produce
All over the country, people are selling locally grown produce. During various seasons, local farms will offer “you-pick-it.” People from the community can come and pick their own fruits and vegetables right from the source. This is fun for the family and promotes health and an eco-friendly lifestyle. Another place to sell locally grown fruit is at farmers’ markets. Many cities have weekly farmers markets all year round. A new trend is a delivery system that lets you order a weekly box of organic fruits and vegetables that are at their peak of the season.
Twenty years ago, home builders did not pay much attention to how eco-friendly the homes being built were. Nowadays, many homes are being built in a way that is both eco-friendly and energy efficient. This opens up a lot of job opportunities for architects and builders. When building a green home, the process is focused on leaving as little of an impact on the environment as possible. Architects design homes so that they are more energy efficient. They do this by reducing air leakage, adding high performance windows, using solar energy and letting in natural light.
The world of engineering has changed drastically over the past few years. People with a degree in engineering or who are looking to go back to school to become an engineer are in a prime position. Engineering is becoming one of the top growing eco-friendly jobs. Every day, new ways to live a more green and energy-efficient life are being developed. One of the top engineering projects recently is the design of the electric car. Other jobs include finding more ways to use renewable energy sources. Engineers can do what they love while helping to make the planet a better place.
Many people are beginning to build a career around their passion. People who live an eco-friendly lifestyle can figure out their passion and build upon it. One example would be to open a store that sells all-natural beauty and health products. There are a few companies which allow you to independently sell their product such as essential oils. Selling services such as acupuncture or massage therapy can definitely allow you to be have a “green” occupation. When people are doing the what they love and helping the planet, it no longer seems like work. It provides them with a sense of accomplishment, and they truly begin to live the life they want.
Go Green at Your Current Job
Not all of us can quit our current jobs and move into a more eco-friendly position right away. However, there are ways that people can make their current job more green. If you use a computer at work, ensure that the energy settings are optimized. Reduce the amount of paper products used by printing less. Carpooling to work is a great way to go green and save money in gas. Use eco-friendly products such as recycled paper. There are many ways to go green in the workplace no matter where you are.
