MSC introduces new bilingual ecolabel for Canadian market
The Marine Stewardship Council today launched a new, bilingual French-English ecolabel in response to requests from MSC partners in Canada who want to further increase consumer awareness about their commitment to sustainable seafood and the MSC program.
Across Canada, commercial partners, fisheries and other institutions continue to make strong commitments to sustainable seafood and the Marine Stewardship Council, and the new bilingual ecolabel recognizes the two official languages in Canada, English and French.
There are many MSC partner companies and fisheries in Canada including: Loblaw Company Limited, High Liner Foods, Bento Sushi, Clearwater Seafoods Limited, Janes Family Foods, Ocean Choice International (OCI), and British Columbia salmon, halibut, dogfish, sablefish, albacore tuna, Gulf of St. Lawrence and Scotian Shelf snow crab, offshore lobster, northern shrimp, Arctic surf clams, swordfish and scallops.
MSC Americas Region commercial director Geoff Bolan said, “The introduction of a bilingual ecolabel is in response to market requests from Canadian retail, foodservice, high education and fishery partners, and reflects the growing awareness and commitment to the MSC program across Canada. The new ecolabel will be immediately available to partners and we expect to see it used very soon; in fact, its first use may coincide with an upcoming announcement of a new commitment to the MSC program from an iconic Canadian institution.”
More than 22 percent of Canada’s population, more than seven million people, consider French to be their primary language.
