Five schools of Le Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario among the most energy-efficient in Canada
SUDBURY, ON - (June 24) - Five new schools of Le Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) have been recognized by the Government of Canada for their energy-efficient design.
Natural Resources Canada will present five granite plaques to the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario during the school board meeting, tonight at 7 p.m.
These schools were designed to be 48 percent more efficient on average than similar schools built according to Canada’s Model National Energy Code for Buildings, a figure well above the national average.
“Congratulations to the CSCNO for demonstrating leadership in energy efficiency,” said the Honourable Gary Lunn, minister of natural resources. “The Government of Canada is assisting municipalities across the country to deliver results. Projects such as these will help to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for Canadians.”
The new schools receiving a granite plaque are École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur in Sudbury, École Alliance St-Joseph in Chelmsford, École secondaire catholique Jeunesse-Nord in Blind River, École secondaire catholique Trillium in Chapleau and École élémentaire Jean-Paul II in Val Caron.
Some of the energy efficiency features in those schools include energy-efficient building envelope, energy-efficient boilers, new heat recovery ventilation and energy-efficient lighting.
André Bidal, school board president, is proud of this recognition for these new schools: “I would like to recognize the hard work of the entire design team and the building services of the school board for reaching such high standards of energy efficiency. We surely appreciate the assistance offered by Natural Resources Canada for these projects.”
Between 2004 and 2007, the school board received $250,000 under a financial incentive from the Office of Energy Efficiency.
The schools expect to save over $200,000 each year in energy bills.
