After yesterday's discussion about Snowden I am starting to form a few ideas. The US is supposed to be a nation of laws. Yet some posters have declared him a traitor and would execute him and he has never been to trial. That may be efficient but it is not what America should be about.
If we assume that the government is always working for the common good and that laws are an inconvenience then the founders must be spinning.
A country that condones water boarding and torture for 'the common security' is suspect in my mind.
Whether someone is elected president or pope that does not make them infallible.
Snowden may be a techno nut job but he deserves a fair trial before he is punished.
Unless the government would not like to see the whole intelligence community have to actually answer some tough questions.

irish your comments last night do supprise me. When you read negative comments about your religion and your god it is only to counter the narrow mindness of some on this site. It is to show the wrongness of stereotypes and the harm they can cause. As stateed before people who follow islam have the lowest assult, and murder rate in the world...and a fraction of the christians do in the usa and canada. I am against the racially motivated propagated hate that people who beleive in your god are spewing like the sewers in sudbury. Have you ever known kindness to work on getting sensitive information out of an enemy. One does what one can to protect your friends, and if a little pain inflicted will do that, would you say no! A hypothetical question, your son/daughter is kidnapped, one of the kidnappers is caught, would you really care what measures the police use to find out where your daughter is?? Or would you say that person has to be given the full protection of the law as a defendent??..
So you fully agree with the use of Sharia Law?? I see, Mmm, I am surprised, I would not have thought that you as "Protector" would embrace the Death penelty for murder, adultery, and a range of religious transgressions, or the amputation of the hand for theft, or lashing for the crime of drinking alcohol. I think you forget that there is no moderation under the strict Islamic laws, but if you agree with those things I am sure we could have a whip round and buy you a one way ticket to one of those countries you admire so much!!!

Never tiptoe or fell intimidated about your religion... Stand up for your Religious beliefs. FIRMLY.
I am a Christian and if anyone disagrees they can pound salt wherever they want to place it.
This country was built mainly by Christians... NOT MUSLIMS.
I refuse to back down on my religious beliefs.
Muslim, Hindu, Hairy-Krishnas, or whatever religion of the day pops up. Do as you wish and enjoy your rights... but realize that you will not have my religion put on the back burner.
Jimssm 5/18/2014 2:30:50 PM Report
You can stand as firm as you like but if Christians don't start practicing their faith as Christ intended it will die.
Mass at my (Catholic) church today had 25 people. 25! Mostly old.
....and 5 of them were Muslim.
Unless and until the largest Christian denomination decides to elevate women to equal status, it will continue to wither on the vine.
rockbanger 5/18/2014 3:14:04 PM Report
You are speaking wisely....
When my children were younger and in grade school they attended the Catholic School System.
I would attend the meetings/functions as a parent and was given a very humbling lesson.
I learned about the lack of attendance at daily mass. Mass in the mornings during the week.
What I saw was spooky and in a way sad.
There were only very old or sickly people in attendance and very few at that. What I took from this was how badly the numbers are in our churches today.
But I still stand by the fact that no one shall push me away from my beliefs. I give all other folks full rights to believe and practice as they choose to.
However this does not give any other religion the right to put my religious beliefs system ahead of theirs nor should they expect me to sit back and allow other religions to try and reduce or infringe upon my faith in Christ. Not going to happen.
Jimssm..... Thanks of your extremely valid point.
With respect...the rockbanger!!

The RCC is crumbling under its own weight.
Prior to the election of Francis it was a bastion of conservative autocrats who were more intent on maintaining control of the people them ministering to them.
In spite of having kids in their elementary schools who receive lessons for sacraments their numbers begin to decline in high schools because their message does not resonate with kids.
They are looking for a method of worship that that focuses on social justice and a joyful celebration of God.
I lived through my best friend leaving the priesthood after 30 years because he 'just could not lie to people I love'.
I don't think what they have become is what Jesus intended.

I know that you are speaking from real knowledge.
It should be known that almost all my children's friends (my children included)... want nothing to do with the RCC and see it as an outdated lie. They all went to the RC-school system.
When I realized this during their last year of high school I was both shocked and saddened. My goal of sending them to the RC-school system was to enhance their belief in Christ and the church. They stopped going to church in their last year of high school. It is not my idea to force them to continue to go to church if they do not wish to be there.
My children will tell you they believe in the life of Christ but see the RCC as a method of mind control. They will also tell you that the teachers were for the most part hypocrites and just people working a job?
The RC-school system is not what it appears to be..!

I strongly suggest that you read a little more than the star and watch the local news, that way you may find out a bit more of what goes on in the world. You state a small percentage follow Sharia law, like Saudi Arabia, Sudan,Iran and depending on which branch of Islam you follow quite a few countries in Africa and as a religion Islam rivals the Catholic Church in numbers and as devotees more, I would guess. I am sorry, but it seems you know nowt about a lot.

We had little idea what sins were. I used to say I disobeyed my mother 3 times. for lack of any other KNOWN sins at that time.I have now started the process of recovery...whereby I have my faith(believe there is a power out/up there) but have eliminated all the middle men such as popes...bishops and priests. I now avoid the middlemen and talk directly to my "god".It is a much simpler life when one realizes that they can miss mass and still avoid the flames of hell.

Kids - and teenagers in particular - have a nose for BS.
But I was in a charismatic church in San Luis Mexico and the kids ran the liturgy. They did the music and liturgical dance in their finest clothes.
It was a joyful spiritual experience.
Try that in most RCC churches. It won't be allowed.
I think that good liturgy is good theater - real, meaningful and connected.

Your last line defines what the religious ceremony is all about.
My last experience with the church was through the SSPX and we sing the songs as they were, the Kyrie, Adoramus and so. The ceremonial environment is the one that rises the spirit.
After the CV II, all countries started the mass with the priest facing the door instead of the Ara and the mass was celebrated in their own language and many other artistic touches, but the point is on how the environment, the liturgy itself rises your spirit and prepares you to receive.
We follow the old tradition and the mass is celebrated as it was in the beginning, something you will not see or hear around anymore.

I as well stand by the fact that no one shall push me away from my beliefs (or non beliefs as it were). I give all other folks full rights to believe and practice as they choose to.
However this does not give any religion/faith or conviction the right to infringe upon my atheism nor should they expect me to sit back and allow their beliefs in whatever god they so happen to revere and try and reduce or infringe upon my thoroughly researched and meditated conviction that there is no god. Because it is not not going to happen.
Furthermore, keep your religion to yourself, practice it, pray, worship but please....keep me and especially my children out of it!
