It's nice to see clear water in what was so recently a murky pool.
I'very been looking in amazement at our PM's trashing of our Supreme court justice. It reminds me of a spoiled child lashing out when it doesn't get its way. It seems to me that a lot of our PM's recent actions and statements, nationally and internationally, are attempts to leave what he sees as a legacy for which he will be remembered. He keeps being thwarted and his anger, as he realizes that his true legacy will be "Duffygate" is showing.
I don't believe he has any intention of running in the next election.

Duffygate, the Elections Act, SCOC, and his personality, are only issues with those opposed to the Conservatives, no matter what the issues are.
Partisans have the same hatred for Davis, Harris, Mulroney no matter what the name. (they do suck up to Joe Clark a bit).
I do believe that Harper will step aside, if it looks like a majority is beyond his grasp. Can't see him wanting to go back and lead a minority government.

I don't recall ever hearing any government say anything different. What else would they want???
But, appointing multiple scoundrels to the Senate. The so-called 'fair elections act' (oxymoron). Discrediting the SCC for political gain. Kissing publicly with Netanyahu (sp.). Overseeing bribery in his office and promoting/condoning it.
Budgets do balance themselves. Spend where you have to....cut where you can and deficit finance the difference. That has been Harper's method, under the firm hand of late saint Flaherty. And most governments, in memory....except Chretien!!
mallet 5/4/2014 12:30:28 PM Report
Couple of things I disagree with you on.. First, I do not know how you can say he appointed scoundrels, they had no criminal record before becoming "entitled". The fair election act, umm errrr, I don't think it is too much to ask for ID, vouching for someone, not too sure about that. Kissing up to heads of state, eh that's nnormal, what they think in private maybe different.
Balancing budgets, there I am afraid I disagree completely, I have never seen one balance themselves. You try it, deficit finance for a while, but then the banker sends you nasty notes and then cuts you off, or demands payment, see Greece,Italy,Spain, Iceland to a degree. The first three have moderate temperatures, Iceland is lucky that it has geothermal, but here it is a different matter, no heating in winter could be a real crisis...
Mr. Poster 5/4/2014 12:42:37 PM Report
Why do so many count Harper out? Unless he retires he certainly has a nucleus of support...perhaps not in this city..but certainly elsewhere. I would not count the Conservatives out just yet. Angry Tom is not so popular and young Mr. Trudeau is an unknown. p.s. I am not a Harper supporter...just saying.
BIG BROTHER 5/4/2014 12:43:57 PM Report
My shock and surprise at your disagreeing with me will scar me for life. Read slowly and carefully...
The fact that they had no criminal records isn't a testament to their character. It is Harper's lousy judgement , combined with his prerequisite of appointing 'sycophants only'. He was also left with a randy group of followers, after his decimation of the Con. party. And then bribing them to 'shut them up'.
Kissing up to heads of state can be accomplished diplomatically, without the histrionics. Have you ever wondered why he was the first PM to speak to the Israeli Parl. It sends a message to our other allies, that we are willing to support apartheid, among other things. Ally with Israel is enough....kissing up to them is over the top!!!
When is the last time any government balanced a budget, other than a liberal. Frankly, Trudeau is being honest, compared to the same old BS....we will balance the budget crap. Quit with the tired old 'if you ran your house like this...' blah, blah, blah...

"When is the last time any government balanced a budget, other than a liberal"
Actually if you look at the overall combined record of Canada's major parties you have the following:
-157 years of Conservative governments
-106 years of Liberal governments
-52 years of NDP governments
(represented at one time in all different western, central and eastern regions of Canada.)
Conservatives balanced budgets 37% of the total years in government.
The Liberals 27%.
The NDP 52%.

Being allowed to address foreign Parliaments is quite an honour, like it or not. As for apathied, I understood that to be separating your own countrymen not foreigners, living in your country, and as for allies, I don't think it has affected that aspect of foreign deplomacy too much...
Balancing budgets, you decry the "Our House" idea, but I think most people try to live to that idea. I do not know too many who say, okay we can spend all we want, someone else will pay for our excesses. Maybe you support that idea..
Why does it bother you that someone has to show ID to vote, I have relatives in the UK and friends in the US, on voting day I will "vouch" for them, how will they check?? Just because a few scholars, Law Profs and lobby groups object, does that make it wrong, they are not always correct, academia has it's own ideals.
Ask the average person in their homes what they say, you will have a fifty fifty reply.
I understand where you are coming from and it is your opinion that the present government is out to screw you, I don't believe so and to date nothing that has been done has affected me or the people I associate with. I can't help but be sarcastic mallet. Don't take it personal...I am an ass. There!! I keep hearing the 'if you ran your house like this...'! and it becomes redundant.
Fact is, if I had the assets, in the form of property, resources in the ground, above the ground, etc., as Canada, I'd be borrowing for today's needs also. It then boils down to how you want to spend those dollars. Immediate gratification for votes or long term investments, which have no immediate effect, like, say, prozac., but will come to roost in the future.
ie. If Trudeau's NEP were allowed to develop, we would now have control of our oil resources. Perhaps we may even be refining our own oil by now. We wouldn't be stuck with world prices or OPEC. Refining your (Canadian) own oil.
My understanding is that the majority of Canada's oil is derived from the tar sands.
This is an important factor in refinement.
The overall economics or viability of investing in oil refineries depends on the interaction of three key elements: the type of crude oil used, the required complexity of the refining equipment and the desired type and quality of finished products produced.
Refinery utilization rates and environmental considerations also influence refinery economics.
Thus it can be far more economic on various levels to export a raw product to an industry that has made it their business to refine.

The reason we will pay World Price soon is that the oil companies want to increase profits. Nothing more complicated than that. The world powers are tired putting up with the US subsidizing western fuel prices.
Currently the world price is $9:40 us/gallon. So if you factor this in we can expect above $2:20 per litre... Some may say, we are almost paying that now and it must just be a coincidence?
There are no coincidences. Big Oil runs the world.

Suggesting that a person, or persons, that behave in bad character is a reflection of bad judgement on the part of the person, or persons, that hired them or appointed them is absurd.
Unless there is a prior record of practicing criminal or otherwise inappropriate behavior it is an extremely difficult task to predict what a person will do in the future.
Perhaps one should seek the advice of those that use crystal balls, tarot cards or tea leaves if you are seriously suggesting that one human should be able to accurately judge all or any behavior of another without evidence of prior related behavior.
Do you apply the same logic to those that hire Lawyers that commit breach of trust, Ministers and Teachers that sexually molest, Policemen that commit crimes, just to mention a few.

Quasi famous, media savvy people were chosen and used as tools to campaign for said chooser, using taxpayer money to do so. This is a definite abuse of the senate and it's purpose, knowingly by the chosen and the chooser..
And if the chooser can't be blamed for their choices, then how about trying to cover up their skullduggery. Is that blameless also??

In MHO, anyone in the capacity of teaching English can make a huge difference in the life of a person who lacks the command of the language for whatever the reasons you may argue.
The difference can be done just tutoring one person. The College and the University here in the Soo have hundred of young foreign students in need of improving ESL, some need to meet the levels of TOEFL.
Did it ever occur to any of you to act as a tutor of one of those kids instead of bulling people around with spelling, grammar, comprehension and the like?
Perhaps you ever consider it and didn't do it, well, maybe this is the time you can make a difference instead of seat front a computer from seven in the morning till eleven a midnight.
I volunteer in other fields that I can give something to the community and so does my wife and my daughter, and I'm not saying it to look better, but for you people to understand how poor is your judgement and how empty you appear to the eyes of other people.
But you, of course, have a keyboard and good command to denigrate and humiliate other people. Go ahead, but if that's all you can do, I pity you.

Sorry but I just don't get most of your posts. I read and re-read and re-re-read but they are mostly incomprehensible.
Either you are writing too fast and not articulating what you want to say, or I am just too stupid and not getting it.
...and your latest obsession with Shakes is in creepy stalker territory.

Every now and then I wonder about why I don't post much on this site anymore and then I read today's offerings and over the top responses by a certain paranoid poster and I remember.
I will say that I had an issue with Shakespeare in the past but upon reflection I realise that he had something that I forgot to use that day, a sense o humor. It would seem I'm not the only one with that problem.
Now, back to my quiet read only corner.
