One must question Harper's obsesion with the keystone deal! Although he does not have any direct power in the decesion making process he seems to be and rather forcefully pushing the USA and even strong arming some communities in BC for approval. Given the limited benefit to Canada as a whole, why is he doing this? Is he seeking a BoD position with them in a couple of years after his rule of Canada? Does the staging of the declassification of various marine life from SARA have anything to keystone or other oil exports?

Interesting article in the National Post today about Canadians' love for Obama not being requited due to his nonsensical rejection of Keystone. A couple of points.
First, voters in general have a penchant for choosing flash over substance, especially when the flash comes in a politically correct package. Obama was the American example of that and Justin Trudeau may be the Canadian example. The Liberal party could have chosen more substantial leaders but went with good looks and the Trudeau name instead.
Second, Obama has shown that he will do just about anything for politics and ideology. Even though Americans and Congress favour Keystone by a fairly wide margin (including many Democrats),and his own state department has twice declared that Keystone will not increase carbon emissions, he continues to march to the beat of the most radical of environmentalists. Trudeau also seems to be driven more by politics and ideology than by pragmatism, although trying to pin him down as to what that means in his case has been difficult.
The parallels here between him and Obama are starting to become a bit disconcerting.

You asked why is Harper allowed to .. etc..
Well for one thing he has a majority government and can ram through just about any bill he wants to..
As for the census form, well lets see, why do they want to know the ins and outs of everyones business, does the government not know how much you earn, what language you speak, where you live, does mpac not know how big your house is and the value. The only reason for a long form is for "interest groups" to make lists to apply for your and mine tax dollars, for various programs that they want to run, are we not all Canadians..
Combining bills into one large one. One can argue two ways on this, would anything get done if each and every bill(piece of legislation) had to go through the process of the three readings and the committee stages and senate approval, or put it all into one bill and debate that all at one time.
As for the voting practices, again this could be open to violations, especially in certain religious/cultural sections of the voting public. How do you verify that a person covered head to foot in clothing is not voting once, twice, three, times because someone "vouched" for them? Has it happened, I do not know, could it happen, I believe so. A more simple way would be for the voter who needs to be "vouched" for has to put their finger on an "indelable ink pad" to say they have only voted once, however in Ontario your health card has all your indentity information on it, and a scanner could be in place as well for those people for whom ID is a problem...

That number of just under $700B is approximately 37% of Canada's GDP. A high number but somewhat lower than some other years. For example, in 1991 it was 55% and in 1997 it was a staggering 64% (just under $600B). In 2002 it was still 44% of GDP. So 37% really isn't bad on a comparative basis.
I might also add that the biggest jump in our debt since your beloved Mr Harper was PM occurred in 2009 when over $50B of stimulus money was provided to get the country out of recession. Had it not been spent, Canada would have been pretty much the only developed nation to not provide stimulus. One might also mention that the Liberals and NDP strongly encouraged the Conservatives to spend that money.
Those are the relevant facts.

Notpc You certainly are coming across as one. GDP 04/72.6%, 06/71.6%, 07/70.3%, 08/66.5%, 09/71.1%, 10/83.6%, 11/85%, 12/85% 13/ 84% . These are based on total Federal debt and certainly paint a different picture than your numbers. Steely go crawl back into your septic tank and pull the lid down tight. The reason that your numbers are different from mine is that your numbers appear to be Gross National Debt to GDP and mine are Net National Debt to GDP. The Gross number excludes the financial assets held by the government. Or possibly you may be including provincial debt which is irrelevant to the federal situation, although I doubt that is what you are doing.
My point though, wasn't the actual percentage number but the percentage compared to other years. Do that comparison and you'll see that my comparison is valid. And by the way, you didn't say anything about the Opposition's demands that the Conservatives spend that over $50B in stimulus money in 2009. That was was the biggest contributor to the increase in debt. Do you believe that it was justified to spend it and increase the national debt or not?

So maybe it’s not the politicians who suck; maybe it’s something else. Like the public. That would be a nice realistic campaign slogan for somebody: “The public sucks. Elect me.” Put the blame where it belongs: on the people. Because if everything is really the fault of politicians, where are all the bright, honest, intelligent people who are ready to step in and replace them? Where are these people hiding? The truth is, we don’t have people like that. Everyone’s at the mall, scratching his balls and buying sneakers with lights in them. And complaining about the politicians.
...George Carlin ;)

I am sorry Poker actually I am centre but I don't like the dismantling of Canada that took generations to make. I hate dishonesty. I work hard for what I have. Not once in my life was I on EI, disability or on the government trough. Everything I have I own outright. I am struggling now that my husband passed away.
I don't rack up bills and I vote with my heart, I believe
in Canada but I don't believe in dismantling institutions that we all earned and Harper is doing it.
He pretends to be the voice of Canada, He is not. He tried to rewrite the election act. He didn't have any permission and he got his hand slapped. He has senators who were paid off and who were downright dishonest. Brazeau Wallin and the Dufster. He took away the wheat board and now we have a backlog of last years wheat that was not shipped. Farmers cannot plan this years crops. He tried to rewrite the justice code again he got his hand slapped. Instead he changing Canada why not work with improving the status quo? That is what Canada needs. He cares only for the Wast and to hell with anything east. Now you know I am a proud Canadian.

Not sure where you got the $50M figure from but it definitely was around $50B. Here is a link to a CBC story in 2010 citing the Fraser Institute claiming that the stimulus package wasn't responsible for the rebound in Canada's economy. It claims the number was $47B, slightly under the $50B. Nowhere near $50M.
notpc 4/23/2014 8:03:09 PM Report
You claimed that your debt to GDP numbers factored in the assets held, but I would suggest that they were in fact the Gross Debt to GDP. I've attached this link to a list of countries and their Gross and Net Debt to GDP ratios in 2012 as determined by the IMF. Note Canada's Gross Debt figure is 84.641% and its Net Gross Debt figure is 34.563%. Your high numbers correlate to the Gross Debt figure, not the Net Debt as mine does. That should explain the confusion.

Notpc and Grump..
Once you get past 5 zeros what the heck does it matter, it's going to be a lot of money.. The main reason is very simple really the government gives away more than it takes in, and we are happy they do that.. The 50billion in the stimulus package, we argued about before, Grump, because if you remember, the Liberals and the NDP wanted to spend more than that... What can we all do without, I do not know who is prepared to give up anything to balance the books and eventually remove the National debt from our childrens childrens, children, if even then. Can a government ever do anything to please everyone, in my years in two countries I have not seen it happen....

Very impassioned post. You sound like a very nice person and very bright.
You are absolutely correct about Harper's plan. It is totally un-Canadian, at least according to what I've always thought Canada was about. Those who like Harper and his leadership, must have had a real hate on for Canada for years. The Western sentiment is his base. They (the West) have despised central Canada for years, right or wrong.
Why this group, on this blog, finds anything redeeming about him is beyond reality.

Muslims are not happy in Gaza
they're not happy in Egypt
they're not happy in Libya
they're not happy in Morocco
they're not happy in Iran
they're not happy in Iraq
they're not happy in Yemen
they're not happy in Afghanistan
they're not happy in Pakistan
they're not happy in Syria
they're not happy in Lebanon
So, let's see where they ARE happy?
they're happy in Australia
they're happy in Canada
they're happy in England
they're happy in France
they're happy in Italy
they're happy in Germany
they're happy in Sweden
they're happy in the USA
they're happy in Norway
they're happy in Holland
they're happy in Denmark
Basically, they're happy in every country that is not Muslim and unhappy in every country that is! And whom do they blame?
not their leadership
THEY BLAME THE COUNTRIES THEY ARE HAPPY IN!! AND THEN; they want to change those countries to be like......the country they came from where they were unhappy!
