Grump 4/14/2014 5:51:23 AM Report

Good morning everyone, a wet Monday morning to start the week. It doesn't look like Harper is going to get his Election Bill to fly. or not for long in any case. A number of Conservatives and a number of Federal Lawyers are now speaking out about it. It would seem that he has lost control these days. Oh! well he still has Polievre and McKay. Have a great day all.

reading the posts from last night its clear wickethas some preset ideas about youth. Its interesting he can make such a broad assumption about teens in Fort McMurry living off mom and dad. I guess he has a great deal of experiance in that area.

Good morning.
Congratulations to all the adults on here yesterday for ignoring the children looking to start something.A few more days like that and they will retreat to their fantasy worlds and find someone else to annoy.

Good Morning Grump and Flyhawk
Grump, your comment about "there is always someone worse off than you" kind of puts everything else in perspective.Too often we like to complain about little stuff, when we are actually doing pretty well.
Fly, that was quite the interesting 3-way conversation you had going there with Mallet and Status.Lots of good points, but was there a decisive conclusion?
I guess things will continue to increase (wages, prices) as long as we have inflation.
flyhawk25 4/14/2014 7:19:24 AM Report

Wild Turkey...I wasn't looking for a decisive conclusion.I was only trying to point out that some issues are complex and need to be considered beyond simple answers.

We all know how polls are but if nothing else they are interesting and good for pot stirring up to election time.

Forum Research.

A new poll by Forum Research published in Thursday's Toronto Star shows Tim Hudak's Progressive Conservative Party leading in popular support with 38 per cent, followed by Kathleen Wynne's Liberals at 31 per cent, Andrea Horwath's NDP at 23 per cent and Mike Schreiner's Green Party at seven per cent.

While the PCs gained six per cent since the last Forum poll, both the Liberals and the NDP saw their share of support drop. The previous survey had the Liberals leading at 35 per cent, the PCs at 32 per cent and the NDP at 25 per cent. The Greens' seven per cent level is unchanged.

Forum Research used interactive voice-response phone calls to contact 928 people across Ontario on Monday with results considered accurate to within three percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Dump it and brag that they are fiscally responsible and garner votes outside the north?Keep it and perhaps get a few more northern votes?
I'm sure they're checking the demographics already.

How about we get them to publish the actual, REAL, per - passenger - trip cost. Then, how much taxpayers are throwing in, for each person per trip.

Then let's see how many people - other than the handful of people who ride it - are really in support of continuing to subsidize it, and to the extent we do.

BIG BROTHER 4/14/2014 12:40:55 PM Report

The ACR property should never have been sold, outright, in the first place. For many years, the Ontario Gov't., subsidized the service, to the tune of 5 mill/ year. When the ACR separated the rail from the shipping division (under Harris of course), the property should have been given back to the Prov. Gov., or the money it sold for handed over to the taxpayers.
Instead ACR kept buying more ships for their fleet.

Corporate welfare, for our capitalist friends, is welfare just the same or worse than the type your ilk despises.

ACR Subsidies

The decision to adjust the subsidies to selected railways was based on a report of a five study issued in November 2010 - http://goo.gl/D2Ryd8 Admittedly this is a dated report but it does identify some trends.

Of the railways studied, the ACR was the only one to show a decline in ridership from a high of 12,640 (2005) to 6093 (2009). Based on these figures, the federal subsidy per passenger was in the area of $410.00 on a subsidy of $2,500,000.00.

It will be interesting to see the updated figures (if they are made public.)
flyhawk25 4/14/2014 1:34:29 PM Report

Every passenger train in NA is subsidized to some degree. But so are many other things.
The question really is - do we want to continue it or let it die?
right wing 4/14/2014 1:56:19 PM Report

Prometheus

The full report is supposed to be released.
It was kept under wraps until this announcement.
Hopefully it puts an end to the speculation on exactly how much money is generated by this service and what the operating costs are.
If I am interpreting the pricing schedule correct it is 160.75 per adult one way (Sault, On.) to Hearst.
As passenger ridership declines we know which way the costs are headed.

For the most part I agree with the gist of what is written in that article.
I am surprised it took this long for somebody to compare J.T. to Obama.

The most accurate statement was this one.

"The Liberals should take warning, however: Despite the party’s recent good fortune, Trudeau’s disapproval rating has been rising at an alarming pace," Graves wrote.

"As more Canadians become familiar with him, their attitude toward Trudeau seems to lean toward disapproval."

Just wait until the debates.

Obama has been the saviour of whatever respect the US had left in the world, post Dubya. And his legacy will lead the way for Clinton to take over the reins, likely with a democratic congress. Obama has to live on the world stage that Dubya burned up any and all goodwill the US had. The US troops are war weary, the country is war weary and frankly, their allies are tired of backing up their lies. Putin is fully aware of this, also. Hell, Obama is even tolerating Harper's tantrums....at least for the time being.

There is an old saying that stands the test of time...'Walk softly and carry a big stick'. The US and Obama still have the big stick. This is not a video game Steely. It's reality and many lives are at stake. And you can say what you want about Dubya, but if he were in charge the US would have attacked Lithuania by now.

That is a very perceptive post BB. I totally agree. I think we're in a very interesting and frightening situation in Ukraine with what Russia really wants and what others perceive they want!

BB and shakes,

Putin will push and shove and test just how far he can go. So far Obama did the responsible thing. Cool and measured.
Putin is crazy but no fool.
He knows that he can only go so far.
An all out confrontation with the U.S he wouldn't dare. There is no country that can match the military destructive power of the U.S.
It is now a chess game. And the Russians are very good at it.
Obama is a reasonable and pragmatic man, but politics are not reasonable, nor pragmatic.

Seven babies were found dead in a garage in Utah. The mom just didn't feel like dealing with them.

Oscar Pistorius cries like a baby....again!

Some racist asshole went on a shooting rampage killing three in Kansas....where in the hell was Dorothy?

CNN is counting "pings" on the missing airliner and Syria is ignored.

Meanwhile...in the Sault....the biggest pot hole contest is wrapping up....Francis Street takes the Oscar!

I think a recipe is in order for Good Friday!

It will involve pork!
