Good morning everyone, time to rise and shine. Have a great day al.

And a good Tuesday morning to you Grump!

I really do hope the weatherman is wrong about the weather for the rest of the week. This is starting to get a bit tiresome...:(
Javaman 3/25/2014 7:24:14 AM Report

Lets hope the NDP association can find a CHOICE of candidates to run this time. This is not the year to recycle old contenders.
statusquo 3/25/2014 7:43:26 AM Report

Just Curious,

What do you mean you hope the weatherman is wrong?
We are getting into the plus 0 territory now. This is balmy. I already wiped off my plastic lawn chairs, did some "yardwork" on my bikini line and plan on tanning in my backyard this weekend. Can you visualize it?.....bikini and a toque and rabbit fur mitts.
That's as many details as I feel comfortable discussing.
Javaman 3/25/2014 8:02:04 AM Report

The weather network 4 cast is calling for 20-30 cm on Thursday with another 10 cm on Friday. Perhaps THAT is what he is talking about ??
Wisenheimer 3/25/2014 8:03:55 AM Report

Cooler today .. high 74 .. warming for weekend.

Javaman, that's exactly what I was referring too.. I don't think we are ever gonna get done with this winter..

And Stats, I was looking forward to spring and milder temps but the picture you have just planted in my head is going to totally ruin it...:)LOL.

45 on Sunday...beginning of the end to winter.
bounder 3/25/2014 9:35:25 AM Report

RW' that snow or temp?
right wing 3/25/2014 9:41:29 AM Report

Ha!....lets hope it's not snow cause I refuse to snow-blow my driveway anymore.
mallet 3/25/2014 10:23:55 AM Report

I am down to my last 8 gallons of gas for the tractor.. not sure I want to buy anymore for the blower system.. and its getting hard to blow snow over the snowbanks too.. I imagine the snowdumps in town must be getting pretty full, at this rate they will still be there in August...
flyhawk25 3/25/2014 10:51:45 AM Report

heck out the snow pile on Bruce St north of the tracks.I'm betting some of it will be there by the long weekend in May.
pride 3/25/2014 11:20:44 AM Report

I was checking out the Sault Star and I was not impressed with the new coat of arms. It looks like a child may of designed it. It looks like a comedy cake. Check it out.
Just Curious 3/25/2014 11:34:22 AM Report

Fly, we have one on the old Soo Mill site off north street that I guarantee will be still flooding basements in the area in June. Somebody is gonna get their ass sued over that one, I'm sure, as people were complaining about it when they first started dumping there. No real drainage except onto the street or into adjacent properties. Rainone should never have been allowed to dump there in the middle of town..It's all who you know, I guess...
Just Curious 3/25/2014 11:50:00 AM Report

For what it's worth, pride, I agree with you.. That new coat of arms sucks.. Funny, we don't hear much about it or have it put up to public hearings as it should be.. There are some things that city council shouldn't be deciding for the city as a whole and this is one of them.. Bad enough they stuck that ugly old shack in front of the Ermatinger house so you can no longer see the place going past. You want to see old, rickety buildings just go downtown, for pete's sake..
Brietsy 3/25/2014 11:52:20 AM Report

Just signed up today. Last time posting here was 5 years ago. Sault Ste. Marie has updated it's coat of arms? I did not see that on the local news section.

where can you find the new coat?
Just Curious 3/25/2014 12:05:52 PM Report

Brietsy; Top of the home page on Sault Star on-line.. Not passed yet, they are just trying to slide it in the back door as usual...
Brietsy 3/25/2014 12:11:46 PM Report

From my perspective, everything up to the top of the crest itself isn't that bad. it's just that blockhosue on top. it looks out of place.
David Poluck 3/25/2014 12:49:34 PM Report

As this design be on the city flags and equipment..What happens to the current design?

theprotector 3/25/2014 12:55:17 PM Report

ratepayers bought it
Brietsy 3/25/2014 12:58:48 PM Report

The Sault star article said that the crest we're used to isn't officially ours, and it does not meet the heraldic standards, so I'm pretty sure what it said is that we'll use the stationary etc. we have with the old crest on it, then we'll phase in the new one as we replace stuff.
Brietsy 3/25/2014 12:59:49 PM Report

For example, we're not going to just throw out all the city envelopes and papers and stuff.
Wild Turkey 3/25/2014 1:15:08 PM Report

Just Curious--
Agreed--this new crest could turn out to an even bigger blunder than the infamous "French Language Resolution"
On the bright side it only cost six hundred bucks, so when scrapped it will be no great loss.
The so called wolves look like something out of an illustrated children's book like "The Three Little Pigs", or "little Red Riding Hood".
Who knew the reference to The Steel Plant looks like a couple of crack pipes?
Ya--this thing has to go--now---remember ---it is supposed to represent our fair city for along, long time.
Brietsy 3/25/2014 1:25:15 PM Report

Wild Turkey-

Thy actually look pretty decent, for heraldic animals. keep in mind, that on heraldry, the Supporters (in this case the wolves) aren't meant to look realistic, they are supposed to represent an ideal. Just like the gryphons, lions and unicorns that usually adorn these crests, they are stylized. (I'm a bit of a history buff. go figure)
Niigaanis 3/25/2014 1:46:40 PM Report

"New" city crest

hmmm, imagine that, the new version of the city crest has the Aboriginals and Voyagers removed....I guess you can't really portray them in this "new" imagine the city wishes to create - that would mean acknowledging that there was original inhabitants and French guests prior to the arrival of the settlers...yes sirree, can't have that
Brietsy 3/25/2014 1:49:41 PM Report

uh... are you not seeing the fleur de lis in the centre of this crest? or the city motto? in ojibwe? My honest opinion, is that other then the blockhouse on top, it looks decent.
soowat 3/25/2014 2:20:58 PM Report

Just Curious

If the proposed new crest is at the top of the front page in the Sault Star, how is that slipping it through the back door?
Just Curious
David Poluck 3/25/2014 2:27:44 PM Report

Hello Pro!

David Poluck 3/25/2014 2:39:33 PM Report

50 Years ago Canada made a change...

Diefenbaker makes his flag choices

For nearly a century Canada had no distinctive national flag. Each time Canadians suggested a new symbol to replace the Canadian Red Ensign, modeled after a British naval flag, there was controversy. Maple leaves, beavers, crosses, crowns — propositions that went nowhere. In 1964 Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson said he'd introduce a new national flag. But Opposition leader John Diefenbaker and the Royal Canadian Legion wanted to stick with the Red Ensign. Everyone had an opinion before Canada finally chose the red and white flag with the maple leaf.
Brietsy 3/25/2014 2:42:28 PM Report

Iagree with mr. polluck in this regard. sometimes, there's never going to be a full agreement on something like this until long after the issue is closed, like in the flag debate.

But I think everyone here can agree about the block house.

If not, I look forward to hearing your opinions.
Brietsy 3/25/2014 2:42:50 PM Report

lookaround 3/25/2014 2:46:02 PM Report

A winter hurricane in March? Ridiculous.

David Poluck 3/25/2014 2:47:17 PM Report

I've been looking on the CBC web site for the documentary I watched this past Sunday giving the whole story including the compromise that proposed by the lone NDP member of the flag committee that gave us the flag we now have.

mallet 3/25/2014 2:59:13 PM Report

David P..

Was the NDP gentleman, the one who wanted the flag to have the outline of a condom on it, to represent the government having sexual relations with the general population of Canada???
flyhawk25 3/25/2014 3:10:39 PM Report

I see that Dr.Ross is running for the NDP seat here.
Nice lady and bright but a political naif.Much like Christian P was.
Neither one had run municipally and had zero experience.
I've only met her once and I've known Christian for years.Funny about perceptions. I often have membership in all parties to get inside info.
Years ago I went to a meet and greet for Ernie Eves who I did not like. But when I met him was I surprised. He was shy and engaging and listened well.Just shows how our perceptions are shaped by media coverage.
Javaman 3/25/2014 3:18:02 PM Report

I think the NDP have an excellent chance of winning in this city. It would behove them to find a vibrant and challenging candidate...not a political has been. Celia may be a nice lady but we need a bulldog of a person to represent this city. She tried once and failed. I see her failing again and at the expense of the NDP party,
David Poluck 3/25/2014 3:45:45 PM Report

mallet, Ya that

Niigaanis 3/25/2014 3:49:55 PM Report

sorry was viewing the image on my cell phone and did not see the ojibwe writing on the bottom until now... still don't like it
Just Curious 3/25/2014 3:50:08 PM Report

Soowat; A very large proportion of the Sault doesn't get the paper any more so I imagine a lot of us haven't heard anything about this issue. I'm not against the change but I think it needs more than one proposal to fly and it should be brought down to the best 2 or 3 and then voted on, not decided on by this council, some of whom could screw up a 3 car funeral...
Wild Turkey 3/25/2014 4:18:13 PM Report

You are so right about perceptions of politicians.Late 70's Prime Minister Trudeau made an appearance at Sault College.Made a very good speech but what I remember most is He seemed a lot taller on T.V.
When my son was graduating from Ottawa U. Dalton M. was the keynote speaker. He had 12 or 13 siblings and they all graduated from Ottawa U.I always thought He appeared awkward on T.V., but He gave an excellent speech that afternoon.
Down the road, that's how I will always remember Him.
David Poluck 3/25/2014 5:01:43 PM Report

Harper, fellow G7 leaders to suspend G8 meetings until Russia 'changes course'

What do think Justin and Tom will have to say about this development?
bounder 3/25/2014 5:15:07 PM Report

The Sault Star images are not very good, the wolves look surprised to see each other and the tails are cartoon type, Saint Bernards have that type tail and is referred to as a flag.
Wolves generally have a shorter tail and round.
The Stone house really is out of place,
it's not something to put on pedestal.
The Fleur Delis should not be there, the White Trillium of Ontario would be a better subject, and I being French/Indian have no problem with this.
pride 3/25/2014 5:38:41 PM Report

Our proud history includes the original people, Ojibwa, French, logging,Bush plane, Ermatinger House and and later in history steel making. What was wrong with what we had as a coat of arms? The present suggested coat of arms reminds me of a book I read to my children Dr. Seuss. If it isn't broken don't try to fix it. If you want to spend our tax money fill the pot holes. Changing the coat of arms on everything in town, eg. city trucks, city stationary, and on and on will be billed to us.
Wicket 3/25/2014 5:41:55 PM Report

There is now a story with picture on the news page of Sootoday of the proposed crest... the block house looks kinda silly sitting on the top, like a hat that is going to fall off... don't like it...

Just Curious

I'm just curious if you could define what you mean by a very large proportion and in proportion to what?
right wing 3/25/2014 6:26:24 PM Report

There should be a Viking on the new crest.....
Brietsy 3/25/2014 6:27:22 PM Report

I would really like it if the house/hat wasn't there. The symbology is packed in pretty tight. Though, honestly, the blockhouse and the ermatinger hose are not bad pieces of Sault Ste Marie history, and should be included, but the art styles are too different.
right wing 3/25/2014 6:32:05 PM Report

After carefully studying the proposed crest...just my opinion, but I really don't like any of it.
statusquo 3/25/2014 6:32:06 PM Report

Serious question to you. No sarcasm this time. No MOPAR jokes. You claim to be French/Indian.
Did you perchance read "The Orenda?" by Joseph Boyden ?
I had to read it twice as I usually do with great books. The first read was very fast...just zipped through it but on the second read I took my time. I am not native but am fascinated with Native Culture.
When I reflect upon what was done to the Native people of North America I tend to get very sad!

The first three chapters smelled a bit of plagiarism, from Brian Moore's novel "Black Robe" that was also made into a movie. I have the book (far superior to the movie,) but I highly recommend the movie as well, the cinematography is spectacular.

Concerning the new crest...a few words in the Ojibwe language really does not pay homage to the historic seeds of this city. They should have included an Ojibwe symbol.

The blockhouse on top really is out of place as a few have noticed.
right wing 3/25/2014 6:58:32 PM Report

I am an frequent listener of CBC radio.
They have an annual Canada Reads literary battle.
It can get quite heated in the debates as the chosen books are battled over and eventually eliminated but Joseph Boyden's The Orenda was the winner.

Snobank 3/25/2014 6:59:52 PM Report

Guess I'm at odds with the general opinions today -

What ticks me off is that most of the northern hemisphere had a warmer than average winter, but, for some reason the north eastern section of North America has had cold weather. Global warming rolls on and we get battered with snow.

I like the proposed coat of arms. Given that, it is of such minor importance that I don't really care.

I have just bought The Orienda. I'm now really looking forward to reading it as soon as my wife finishes it.
Snobank 3/25/2014 7:00:21 PM Report

Just Curious 3/25/2014 7:12:50 PM Report

rw, don't be a nit-picker. Google it for yourself.
right wing 3/25/2014 7:13:19 PM Report

Yep 2013 was 4th warmest year since the satellite era.
Now given the climate trend @ +0.14 C per decade if it keeps this "massive" upward swing we just might have an extended summer in a hundred years or so...that is if we don't head to another ice age.

right wing 3/25/2014 7:16:19 PM Report

Just Curious

So you make a claim.
I simply ask you what you based it on and what you meant by proportional and suddenly I'm "nit picking".
No need to explain any further, your response explains it all, you simply threw that out there without any actual facts on what the Sault Star's current circulation numbers are...didn't you.
right wing 3/25/2014 7:27:24 PM Report

Since you like to read I have two recommendations for you....

The Particle at the End of the Universe, by Sean Carroll, and The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene.

Interested let me know I'd be glad to lend them.
Hunter101 3/25/2014 7:43:44 PM Report

That new city coat of arms is a sacrilege.

Extremely plain and right on top is a the mis-shapen shack in front of the Ermatinger-Clergue house.

No wonder people laugh at us.
statusquo 3/25/2014 7:50:38 PM Report

I would be surprised if your wife "likes" the is brutal and a cruel telling of how things were.
I liked the telling through the eyes in the first person of the protagonists, same events take a different meaning when told by another person.
In the meantime, while you wait for your wife to finish the book, read "Black Robe" or watch the movie....the similarities are staggering.

And rw, thanks for the offer, we could swap books...I have "God is not great" , "The Atheist Manifesto" and of course, "My Pet Goat"!

(smirkey face)
sparks7 3/25/2014 7:56:39 PM Report

He got his sources from a few places..Some I could see bordering on plagiarism but over all a great book..did you read "Three Day Road" ,or "Through Black Spruce"?....very good books by Boyden.

Wisenheimer 3/25/2014 7:58:05 PM Report

Who wants to trade places with Mike Mastacchio or Steve Swanson?
American astronauts currently on the ISS.
Russia puts them up and brings them down.
Mean while America is run by a community organizer who lets NASA rot on the vine and thought Putin would be his best buddy after he got re-elected. Told Romney he was a fool, for thinking his new best friend was a threat.
Elections do have consequences and America has got themselves a real piece of work.
Just Curious 3/25/2014 8:14:18 PM Report

rw, it was more an opinion, altho I'm pretty sure it was close to true, judging by the size of the bundles while I was working there. What happened, the big kids hurt your feelings so now you are gonna pick on me?? Get a life Dude...At least Sootoday finally got on top of the story.. It's not doing well either, from what I see so far..Of course that's only my humble opinion, before rw jumps again...:).
statusquo 3/25/2014 8:30:30 PM Report

I actually read "Spruce"....but not "Three day". He certainly has a factual, stark way of telling a story.
By far his latest book, The Orenda, has impressed me the most. Maybe due to the fact that it takes place in a mystical place, in the past where I could imagine myself making a difference, where in "Spruce" he tells the contemporary plight of the Native People and as paradoxical as it seems I am further removed from making a difference.
I did not mean to use the word "plagiarism" in a pejorative term, after all, all good stories are in one or another way plagiarized from some source.
I just found the similarities in some details remarkable.
Brian Moore's " Black Robe" was original and fresh, far removed from James F. Cooper's romantic, and sugar coated Leatherstockings. Then again, I cannot claim having read anything by Cooper, as I am told he was convoluted and complex.
