I bet your sides are hurting from all your laughter from last night posts, :)... STATUS.. An anchor and anchorette today on CNN said the following .. "doesn't seem plausible that any of the passengers on board Flight 370 could commandeer the 777 and fly it."
Apparently they were born in 2002 or have the I.Q. of turnips.
theprotector 3/16/2014 8:44:57 AM Report

It is CNN what do you expect! Why are they now making a big deal about the flight simulator the guy had? I heard that the first day the flight went missing? Hmmm
Javaman 3/16/2014 8:45:18 AM Report

In a recent poll Olivia Chow is comfortably ahead of Rob Ford. If an election were held today she would win. That is sure to spark more antics by the big buffoon.
Wisenheimer 3/16/2014 8:50:58 AM Report

It will probably polarize the far left against the far right, and allow John Tory to go up the middle.
Javaman 3/16/2014 8:53:11 AM Report

Our own mayor won in the same fashion...squeaked up the middle and is still in shock that she won !!! lol
BIG BROTHER 3/16/2014 9:15:01 AM Report

John Tory is far right already....Ford should be a non issue, except with Hollywood looking for another 'fat guy' comedian, ala Chris Farley. It's a toss-up between two donkeys and Olivia Chow.

Our mayor's shock is equal to Caicco's shock that he didn't win. He thought he and Joe would ride off into the sunset together.

Very interesting comments yesterday regarding the situation in Ukraine.Always educational to get informed opinions on this very important topic.
As the great Casey Stengel once remarked--"It's not over 'til it's over"
This is history in the making. My only hope is that it doesn't escalate into a full blown shootin' war.

Good morning everyone, had another lazy morning and it was really nice. Also nice to see the sun even if it's still cold. We were out last evening to get gas and had dinner. Came home around 8.00 pm and it was still daylight, so it will have to warm up soon. In the meantime I have to go dig up some construction heaters out of storage for tomorrow. Have a great day all.
Bobby Nerves 3/16/2014 9:46:39 AM Report

wild turkey, what will happen with the rest of the world, should today's plebiscite in Crimea decide to stay with the mother russia?

The world is plagued with very old land and territorial disputes and many interested parties will choose a solution "a la russa".

Putin, being a short man is taking an incommensurable stature.

And many country handlers may line up behind him instead of following the athletic, diet conscious and environmentally safe Obama.

After all, polonium 210 is more effective than drones and rarely will register collateral damage.
Bobby Nerves 3/16/2014 10:14:07 AM Report

jimssm, you'll have to ask the general.

This morning the media in India is reporting that the Malaysian government has requested from India to stop the search in the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Islands.

There are details that make no sense and we receive the news about 36 hours later. Yesterday very early was known that the captain had a fly-simulator in his house and he was also cooperating with software and game developers, but it's if not common, at least frequently, the pilots have fly-simulators at home.

Regarding CNN, Ted Turner is in Argentina for a surgery and to visit his newly acquired expensive and productive land with aquifers.
Jimssm 3/16/2014 10:31:06 AM Report

Bobby...

"You'll have to ask the General"

YOU brought him up, remember?

If you are going to bring theories forward, at least put some thought into it. An aircraft with 4000 km worth of fuel can't fly 5500 km.

It's more likely your were looking for any excuse to put Muslims into the mix.

flyhawk25 3/16/2014 11:09:31 AM Report

BB...you brought up an interesting point about Caicco.
He and his handlers thought it was a slam dunk.
The mix of players in that group was not just Tories but some prominent Liberals.
They were completely bind-sided.

BIG BROTHER 3/16/2014 11:25:55 AM Report

Fly,
For the most part, civic governments seem to have escaped the partisanship displayed in US civic politics. We each have our bias', but municipally, they have rarely been an issue in local government. Until Rob Ford. He is encouraging partisanship on the local level.

I just read a good article on Toronto's political scene. The consensus among all was that municipal politicians shouldn't be campaigning on cutting or lowering taxes. Infrastructure needs to be constantly repaired or built. I think we all remember the 'no tax increases' in our city. Infrastructure took a hit and eventually, we had to play catch up with work and taxes.
soowat 3/16/2014 11:30:30 AM Report

Just Curious 3/16/2014 11:39:52 AM Report

Big Brother, I am out and about on foot constantly around this town and as far as I am concerned, we still have a long way to go to catch up..For every one thing that we fix, several others fall apart..Fratezies years of no tax increases kept him in office but is now biting the whole town in the ass..The back streets and sidewalks in this burg are in terrible shape and getting worse and the tax increase that will be required to bring us back up to snuff is just mind-boggling. If people think their taxes are bad now they are gonna be some ticked off when they get back up to where we should be to look after the kind of up-dating this whole town requires..And I won't refer to the Soo as city as it really doesn't have the population base anymore to justify it.. If we keep going the way we are we will soon be the village by the rapids that we started out as...(no smiley face as it is no longer funny).
Wild Turkey 3/16/2014 11:47:50 AM Report

@Canna---thanks for catching that---It prompted me to study up on Old Casey and frankly His Stengalese was not in the same class as Yogi's quips. He was a very successful manager, though.
BIG BROTHER 3/16/2014 11:53:35 AM Report

Just Curious,
You are hitting bingo's with me. Yet, we keep sprawling further out, away from the center. Growth is wonderful if it can be justified. But our population hasn't grown with the expansion. Therefore, the tax base is not growing, yet the taxes required, to maintain the streets we already have, is growing. Guess where the money is coming from.

I went for a walk through Cambrian Mall yesterday. Saturday afternoon and the mall was quiet. There was a time the lunch court there would be packed with people. Not the case yesterday. More stores closed than open. Went into Winners....their inventory was spread out so thin in order to fill the space, I felt like I was in a 3rd. world country. In other words, they are just hanging in there.

Javaman 3/16/2014 11:56:33 AM Report

In order to get re-elected this council will not even mention tax increases. After the next election there will all kinds of money needed and the taxes will be mind boggling as they reach unheard of heights. the infrastructure is going to have to be fixed and it will cost millions. All the more reason you will see seniors opting out of home ownership .FRATESI is to blame ,somewhat, but councils since then were only interested in getting re-elected so are no better than Joe.
Just Curious 3/16/2014 12:16:54 PM Report

Javaman , ALL "town" councillors are only interested in getting elected, bar none. They only give lip service to whatever they have to too get there and then the hell with it all.. The problems here will not be corrected in my life time and may never be. This town had a Steelplant mentality for a hundred years and kept out a lot of industry that could have made us what some think we are. Truth is we are squat at the moment and the residual steelplant mentality is gonna keep us that way. Until there is a complete turnover of council and the mayors office this town will never change, and that includes getting Joe out also. He still runs this town and probably has more drag as CAO than he ever did as Mayor. I love the Soo and have since I started working in this area in the late sixties but I think we might as well start thinking in terms of a village, not a city, unless some drastic changes are made.. And they need to be made soon. For myself, I will vote for anyone under 40 with no previous ties to the Status Quo( no offence stats). WE desperately need new thinking..
Just Curious 3/16/2014 12:27:34 PM Report

Big Brother. Canadian Tire and Romes are all that keep that mall going and I will fearlessly predict that Romes will soon not be there in it's current style. People in this town are running to the discount stores in droves because the money just isn't there anymore. Pino's is even running specials now that they wouldn't have a short time ago. When Romes charges 1.29 for a 69 cent can of soup they are definitely pricing themselves out of business.. I personally always considered Winners to be an overpriced Giant Tiger and never in the time it's been open ever bought anything there.. But, that's just me..
Just Curious 3/16/2014 12:28:50 PM Report

Anyway, that's enough deep thinking for me today, I'm getting a headache..LOL..I'm outa here...:)

Big Brother

Misinformation at it's finest.
You do realize that March is one of the worst months for retailers don't you.
Take your walk in mid April and get back to us on your "report".
I used to own a store in the mall, I know the patterns as do all the other retailers.

Javaman 3/16/2014 12:40:53 PM Report

Folks shop "specials" more than ever before. With rising fuel costs for heating your house and putting gas in the tank, we have to make those dollars stretch. I used to think it was not economically sound to shop specials at ALL local stores but I am now convinced you can save a few dollars by doing so. I do avoid Romes and Pinos as they are just too expensive for my pocketbook.
Of course, there is a large segment of our city that shop on the USA side and tend to save big bucks as well.
BIG BROTHER 3/16/2014 12:44:11 PM Report

Just the facts, as things appeared yesterday. The food court was basically empty with most food selling booths closed.

Storefronts papered over. Traffic low. Thems the facts...

I used to own a store in that mall....emphasis on 'used to'....
Javaman 3/16/2014 12:51:02 PM Report

Cambrian Mall...It is a great mall..centrally located ... bright and clean...easy access. It just shows that those wanting to open and run a business cannot afford mall leasing costs. Times have changed and those bucks are not there if customers are not coming through the doors. I think we may see more stores opening in the downtown area where rent costs are lower.
Wisenheimer 3/16/2014 1:01:37 PM Report

If you think Cambrian Mall is thinning out (Peoples leaving shortly?) how about Wellington Square ? How that place remains operating is a mystery.
Just Curious 3/16/2014 1:02:43 PM Report

javaman, I hope you are right as we need to get back to basics..
And rw, exactly why did you close you store in the mall??? No business, rent to high??? Explain please...
flyhawk25 3/16/2014 1:03:15 PM Report

Not having direct access to Rome's effectively killed an anchor store.
That end is Death Valley.
Just Curious 3/16/2014 1:05:29 PM Report

Also, javaman, Romes separating themselves from the mall was a shot to the stomach for the mall. Whoever allowed that should be brought to task for it as it was a stupid decision...

Sorry , Fly, you said it first...:)
theprotector 3/16/2014 1:09:42 PM Report

Jc you walk all over this city and you havent been hit yet? Too bad. As far as romes is concerned they have had financial difficulties from day one. They cant even be considered an anchor store with no access to mall. That mall and the wellington square mall must be a huge drain on someone s pocket book

Wisen, you better get home soon to the land of reality... You've had one 60lber too many. American booze rots your brain cells.. I know because it said so on the internet...somewhere...hell, google it...LOL.

As for Wellington Square Mall, If you don't have an anchor on each end there is no reason to just walk thru and stop at other stores in the area. Had Walmart decided to open there instead of down town you would have trouble finding parking there.
theprotector 3/16/2014 1:52:50 PM Report

Damn I hate agreeing with a puppy pounding horseccrap eating loser like jc but he is right about the stores
flyhawk25 3/16/2014 1:57:08 PM Report

Another example of what happens when an out of town owner owns something here is the Churchill Plaza Plaza. They turned the parking lot into a concrete barrier maze.Impossible to maintain in winter.
Simply a mess.
Just Curious 3/16/2014 1:57:49 PM Report

rw, where'd you go??? Google button broken?? The Cambrian Mall is a dead zone any time of the year.. The number of stores and restaurants that have opened and died in that mall is incredible.. The food court used to have a great bunch of outlets, now they are down to a second rate coffee(sorry, second cup)shop and not much else. Open Romes to the mall and it may come back but otherwise it's a dead zone. As soon as you open the stores to outside access you lose the whole mall concept..:)

Re Wellington Sq, both Tool Town and Food Basics do a fairly good business. I don't have a store front but I pay a good dollar for space there and there are a few others as well. Could it be busier, certainly but they are making a go of it. Quite frankly I'm not sure that more than a few are doing much better than that right now.

A. Either you were not listening carefully to the whole train of conversation. There is a medical term for that , "hyposunetosis", or

B. Your own I.Q may not be much higher than that of a root vegetable. After all, it was you and nobody else on this fine blog that fell for my day light savings time joke a while back. Well maybe "bounder" would have, but he was probably too busy trying to fit MOPAR parts on his Toyota.
Just Curious 3/16/2014 2:20:43 PM Report

Grump, as I understand it, A&P held onto their lease for quite a few years there until the union contracts ran out so they could open a Food Basics there.Pino wanted to move there but A&P wouldn't quit the lease. The mall almost died then but they are still holding on. Tool Town doesn't really qualify as an anchor store but there have been quite a few that have tried and lost in that location so I give them credit. I don't know what would bring that Mall back but it's so far away from Walk-in traffic that it's a tough sell. Maybe rw could open a plumbing shop there or something.;)

Just Curious...

When we used the Wellington mall the greatest deterant was getting in and out of the place. You either had to go with the traffic flow, or you sat there waiting for quite a while for a break in the traffic. Now they have the set of lights on the Macnabb extension and you can get out the town end of the parking lot it would make things easier. They have put traffic lights up for most of the other malls, but I suppose there was not enough usage to do it for that one...
Just Curious 3/16/2014 2:42:18 PM Report

What would happen if China purchased 3 tons of gold.
Federal Reserve/USA do not have the gold, but made the sale, and sent three tons of bricks properly sealed.

The airline, deliberately left 50 seats unsold most likely due to overload. For IATA calculaton, 50 adults at 75 kilos each 3.750 kilos.

The airline sent a senior captain, well trained with outstanding record to fly the ac and the load.

If the load gets to destination will be a problem when the chinese find out there are only bricks.

They added an engineer to the fly who was accommodated as staff after passengers and load.

In time, the engineer open the latch and play with the avionics.

The sea in that area, is from 30 to 45 meters deep and if the airplane felt in the bay, part of it should be standing almost out the water.

The ac must disappear and never be found.

The only one person knowing the cargo is the captain and the first official was assigned randomly as was the crew.

Malaysia Airlines made public via wall street journal that was no valuable cargo in the ac belly.

Well, I don't expect it to be public if they moving three tones of gold.

JC. I'm adjusting in the typical Brit. way ... a stiff upper lip and lots of whimpering. I cannot believe this winter. I spent some fun time starting one of my vehicles. It just occurred to me that all of the discussion about pellet stoves or wood stoves and natural gas prices would be totally non-starters in the Hawaiian Islands. There are no heaters. Most of the places we've stayed have no air-conditioning either. It really is a perfect climate. Kauai will never have water problems as it rains every day in the mountains and there is an abundant supply of fresh water. Population of the entire island: slightly less than the Sault! No building above the height of a palm tree.
I feel another whimper coming on ...

He can send 50K militia into Crimea and keep them there. It will help the local economy cause he has to inject hard currency to keep the tovarich running. The, the russians in Crimea will start pushing the frontier with the Ukraine and in six months all Ukrainians dissidents will be out of the Ukraine as we know today, while the population will turn out to be in favor of joining mother Russia... then another plebiscite.

Why was not a phone call? Because the bird went up to 45K altitude and we don't know how long it was there, but passengers and cab crew suffer hypoxia while the cockpit was using oxygen. Depressurization could be another cause.
Now, seems like based in the passenger load and the fuel the 777 couldn't go up that high, but some expert pilots mentioned that altitude is something personal and even when the limit of the 777 is 39K' it very well could have been driven up to 45K', but there are some doubts, however the communications seems to confirm in favor of 45K'.

Big Brother

No emphasis...I sold it.
You do love to jump to conclusions don't you.
The Cambrian Mall has been like that since it opened and there have always been the negative folks like yourself (you do realize you are a very negative person) that have been predicting it's demise.
There are days you can fire a canon ball off in that place and you would not hit anybody.

Retail stores always come and go...it's the nature of the beast.

Jim,

"Also, I can't believe there have been no cellphone communications."

Because at 45k feet the cabin was depressurized. The passengers are dead.

The gold is being unloaded in Craplakistan as we speak.
Oliver Stone already has first bids on movie rights.

The cast, from what I have googled , will be Ron Jeremy playing the pilot, George Clooney as the retired and jaded U.S ex N.S.A official with an alcoholic wife (Penelope Cruz) and an estranged daughter (Jennifer Lawrence) .....I've been contacted by my agent and offered a non speaking cameo role as the guy that laced the chicken sandwiches for the flight with a potent narcotic and was asked if I knew somebody that could play the chief engineer that rigs the aircraft's communication system...I was thinking of "bounder"...cleverly installing a "mopar" transponder....

This is all I know at the moment....more to come.

Northern Pakistan...

1. Not enough fuel to get there. No way, not even close.

2. No way to get through Indian or Pakistani air defence without being detected.

As far as cellphones..

I am not talking phonecalls. I am talking GPS. I can locate my phone anywhere in the world even if it is turned off, and I bet the government can too.

At 45K feet for enough time... yes passengers are dead... unfortunately pilots too.

Cellphones...I wasn't talking about phonecalls, I was talking GPS which is triggerable remotely even with the phone switched off.

The only way it wouldn't work is if it was in the ocean and exposed to salt water.

statusquo 3/16/2014 6:50:45 PM Report

Jim,

I was talking about the absurdity of trying to figure out as to exactly what happened.
I didn't want to trivialize the situation as more than likely the passengers and crew are dead .

From what I have gleaned from various news reports this was something completely un-political (organised terrorism) but a random act from the pilot or co-pilot with a short circuited brain.
If it was a planned act of terrorism, some miscreant organization would have surfaced from under the rock they are hiding and claim responsibility.....but they haven't!
What people fail to understand is that the area being searched is vast .

Bobby Nerves 3/16/2014 6:51:44 PM Report

jim, yes, Murdoch wish list may not hold water, but he has access to intelligence.

You can track your phone if you have an application installed and if you do not have one, go online and install one right now.

The record you're referring to is most probably the roaming, as the holder moves the phone will ping the dish but as it has not access to the network it will end in a ping.

It must be something that we do not know or all this is a smoke screen and behind it, either China or Malaysia are negotiating with the hijackers.

One thing that I can't understand is, they could track the plane flying certain distance, either North or South. The plane had 8 hours fuel plus three hours fuel. They know by the communications that the plane flew x miles or km. and should be in point A North or B South.
There is no debris to be found and for this time the whole area is constantly swiped by satellites. 8 days into the tragedy, something should start to be identifiable.
Then the plane hit a mountain, but the smoke would be detected by the satellite.
Then the plane is parked safe somewhere and safely hangar(ed) or parked among many other planes somewhere else.
Further to the phones question, as the plane was flying evading the radar, the crew cab would eventually have used their phone (should they be alive) and as they open the phone they will encounter the country welcome message.

In regards to valuables in a commercial flight, yes. It's standard and the only one receiving the cargo manifesto is the captain. Either valuable cargo (Switzerland) or personalities. Captain and first officer are not team, they are randomly assigned and so is the crew.

I have been reading everything available on the missing airliner.
Lots of speculation, little facts, yet.
I will wait until the facts surface....then I will tell Nerves exactly what happened.

;)
right wing 3/16/2014 6:57:13 PM Report

To be fair to Nerves I will put forth my hypothesis.
The plane entered a twister....a little girl in row D, seat 3, clicked her heels and the entire plane is in Kansas.
All they need is a bucket of water to melt the witch and they can all go home.

I think this one will go down in history along with the disappearance of Emelia Earhart. I do not think there is a "Bemuda triangle" in that area, but as you say it is a vast area. However what kind of boggles my mind is that the U S supposedly has satellites that can read the name off a package of cigarettes, and they have seen nothing.. Maybe that was just a ruse to fool the various groups it wanted them to know they (the US) knew where they were!!!

No one knows what happened to the plane.

There are so few facts to go on that everyone is speculating wildly.
Bobby Nerves 3/16/2014 7:17:53 PM Report

Jim, turned off in a phone has a value assigned for the engineers who designed the phone.

Your phone is turned off, means that you'll not be able to perform certain operations, but the phone itself will continue sending GPS and other packets of information to the dish.

Why do you think I told white ring that he better check his van, he's been tracked 24/7.

David P..

The BBC news service says it's 95.5 in favour, but what the heck in a "democracy" you only need 50% plus one, according to some. I was just looking at some of the time lines on this. It sort of runs like 21 Nov 2013 Yanukovych nulls a scheme to join the E U. then in December a Pro E U protest, protesters occupy the Kiev city hall abd Independence Sq.20/21 Feb 88 are killed in clashes and next day Yanukovych flees to Russia, Parliament cans him and seeks new elections. 27/28 Feb gunmen seize key buildings in Crimea and Crimea Parliament on 6 March calls vote to secede and calls for referendum on March 16th. Now IMHO there has been nothing done illegal as the U N and West says apart from the protesters overthrowing the elected president of the country, which of course the west supports as it overthrew a country's president whom we did not like...

Big Brother, don't get carried for white ring grandiloquence.

His activity is limited to a cell phone, a pager and the car.

If he ever had an store was on Queen St., across the arena tower.

As I remember they use to sale cannabis sativa in a pot hole there.

Now, if you are out for a laugh, push him a bit and he'll confess here. He owns the majority voting shares to rio-can and he had the proxy vote from the rest 49%.

Don't said I told you.

Furthermore:
I have to add something, since the last incident, he's avoiding the car and now "exercise with his bike daily in order to keep in line".

Bobby Nerves 3/16/2014 9:40:58 PM Report

I would like to believe there are notable differences between Crimea and the case you're proposing.

Crimea is socked by a large power because probably that same power contributed to a vacuum space. Putin is capable of kicking the table when loosing the game and he could foresee this situation, that's why he fueled the ukraininan resistance to his own benefit, they are experts with intrigues and revolts, intelligence and counter intelligence.

Ukrainians are poor in a rich in resources country.

Vacuum of power with Putin dividing to conquer.

Remember this is not Ukraine voting to join Russia. This is an already separated state where a kangaroo plebiscite is carried on in order to fulfill the formalities, but the russian army is there already to stay, then we should call things by it's name.

Now he got Syria with Saddam armament; and now Ukraine; and now things are easier, he has the Napoleon complex and will try his luck somewhere else, you'll see.

Quebec is a much different scenario, there is a lot of resent among quebeckers not only against english canada, but against everyone who's not as quebecker as they wish, and that's an advantage for the rest of Canada.

Bobby Nerves 3/16/2014 10:18:49 PM Report

Shake, that article points the old same names, but no fears now, Serbia and Romania today are more germanic than ever and Deutschland will do a fine job.

Lithuania, Letonia, Estonia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Polonia, Checoslovaquia, those countries suffered under the russian oppression and for a while none of the political leaders will be tempted to join russia as the opportunities in this side of the fence are greener and brighter.

But, also remember those people are turco-islamics; the rest of the byzantine-orthodox empire and Slavic. I didn't know about the situation between Greece and Macedonia, but I noticed they have profound differences, similar to Palestine-Israel and that could be very well a political liability that Putin will know how to take advantage of.
