Good Morning.

flyhawk25 3/15/2014 7:24:36 AM Report

Good morning.
Yesterday we saw a prime example of what happens when someone states an opinion based on bad information and defends it by name calling.
Later we read how anyone who criticizes the PM is a Liberal whatever.
For the record - I think the trade deal with Korea might have merit. Good for the PM.But I think he lacks a vision for Canada.
We criticize other leaders for their time usage and vacations but Harper wrote a book. Not on free trade, history or economics but on hockey.
I can't see Pearson doing that.Or Stanfield.
Javaman 3/15/2014 7:49:54 AM Report

I think Harper needs to stay in this country more and fix OUR problems. He is handing out another 220 million to the Ukraine. Do they really need our money? Are they that poor? We have a lot of concerns here in Canada Mr. Harper.

As we venting... Jimssm, you're welcome to fly any sort of thing with a muzzie at the wheel.

Call me bias and prejudice, but I'll be alive while you'll have the rest of you existence watching the muzzie jumping from cloud to cloud with the virgins.

Either the young co-pilot or a black widow, and probably two or three black widows, got into the cabin, kill the pilots and took over the command (remember the pilot allowing ladies in the cockpit). The plain dropped from 45k to 40k altitude in one minute; then stable; then communications off in a 15' interval. The plane corrected the course and headed to Kazakstan.

Ho Ho Ho, does Putin have a problem in his own back yard Yes! Does China needs another terrorist attack to kill all muzzies; no right now and that's why while USA said the plane went West, the Chinese is showing pictures that the plane went East.

The religion of peace did it again! And the rest of the world look like fools.

Again, call me bias and racist, but I rather be bias and racist alive.

Re Sparks 7 from yesterday; I feel much the same.. This country is so broke, running a huge deficit that keeps growing and yet we can give away millions to other countries. We can't afford to keep our own poor fed and housed or our own infrastructure running yet there is some deep pocket that we can keep taking money out of to hand out to other countries. We have no business messing in their affairs in the first place but Harper seems hell-bent on leaving a legacy as a world statesman..

Hate to beat a dead horse---but---I recently viewed a very interesting doc. on P.B.S.about scenic railways of N.America.How many are there?Over 500.So the competition for riders is fierce. Our Tour Train has a huge advantage in that the scenery is indeed superb compared to some of the ones on the Documentary. We need to be more aggressive ,if we want to keep it going, however, but it looks like it is easier to just give up.
Which brings me to poster #2's comment about Ukraine. Can't we have just one % of that money for our great tourist attraction? Then we could talk to the other 500 successful operators and "get back on track".
Also on tourism--there was a short piece on the news about Niagara Falls. They too are suffering declines in visitors. In the good old days , before 9/11, 70% of their visitors were from the U.S.A.Their tourist dept. is working hard to get back to those levels-ours should be too.

Jimssm 3/15/2014 8:39:28 AM Report

Bobby...

A couple holes in your reasoning.

No terrorists have claimed responsibility. There is no way they would give up their 15 minutes of fame. If they hijacked the plane and crashed it, someone would be broadcasting it to get credit. It's not 'terrorism' if no one gets afraid except those who are already dead.

The USA, Russia and China know EVERYTHING that big that is flying in their airspace, no matter how low.

The plane pinged the Boeing maintenance satellite channel for 3 hours after contact was lost so it was still flying. Now it isn't, so it has crashed.

Bobby, racism is ok, none of us like things that are different than us. Just don't let it blind you.

The Ukraine crisis will act as a catalyst for the nations of Europe to further unite politically and militarily. A new world superpower is about to be born in Europe from the abdication of American influence to counter threats from the east and the south. America is in serious decline economically and morally and cannot be trusted to protect its allies.

Bobby, here's an article by Guttenberg on the Ukraine.

Next for Canada Harper wants to dismember Canada's Health Care. He is on to it, no more health transfers to Ontario. No direction for health care. with this prime minister and why? He hates the middle meddlesome class. Let us vote for something new, someone who stands for Canada will defend US and not the Ukraine. Another trinket travel at my dime again. He is a waste of Canada's hard earned tax dollars. The Job Action plan doesn't exist folks. Another waste of OUR hard earned tax dollars. Attack adds again a waste of money and it won't help because he has dug a whole he won't get out of.

What a waste for Canada but 2015 is coming and he is OUT. So we can be proud Canadians once again without a meddling unconcerning PM.

"America is in serious decline economically and morally and cannot be trusted to protect its allies"

That of course is untrue, but it doesn't hide the fact it's time countries like Canada quit hiding behind the USA and actually man-up and do something on their own.

Canada is like the thirty-year-old that won't leave home. The USA is the parent that is tired of the lazy, free-loading kid.

Grow up, Canada, quit relying on the USA for everything.
Bobby Nerves 3/15/2014 9:23:27 AM Report

Spelly, I disagree with you. Me, the one that once said to you: Would be a time when everything will seem lost. Well, then germany will intercede and stop iran.

There is not such a threat from Europe.

The only threat to the world is terrorism, and I'm sorry if I insist, I have it under my skin.

Terrorism is fueled with peoples discontent.

Europe is ahead of USA in many aspects, but when you have a fact like an aircraft flying without identification over the part of the world where the military are the boss, and continue flying for about seven and half hours with 230 hostage in the belly, something is very wrong.

Someone, somewhere is interested to know what the USA know and what information the USA is receiving from where and from whom and how.

And that someone is not Europe, it's Putin and unfortunately there is an agreement between putin and a sector of china in order to mine the USA power. Remember the traitor snowden, assange? They are all disposable pieces of Putin become a master.

Pakistan, India? Taliban controls large areas of Pakistan.

When everything is lost, remember how the USA behaved with the enemies once they were conquered. USA may have a lot of enemies, but like any man in life, your friends are just few and you know who they are and the weight they can bear.

And you don't need them close to you!

USA is still holding Germany's gold. That's a fact.

All the rest is speculation that we wrongly assume as a fact.

It's a fact that someone disconnected the flyway. That's intentional.

A sudden drop in altitude, 5.0000' in one minute could be compatible with an struggle in the cockpit, pilot reduced, then someone with pilot experience, not in 777, took command of the operation.

No one in the crew reacted?

The plain last contact was at 0107 but there is official not confirmed information that the plain was at
08:11 somewhere between border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to northern Thailand or at the same time 08:11 somewhere between Indonesia and the southern Indian ocean.

This gives you an idea about the value of human life in the East and the value that we give to human life in the West.

If was not communication between the cockpit and land with a support group to know the operation is a go, then it's a dormant cell in a suicide mission.

Why is China muddying the waters with bogus information?

One of those greedy companies, imo. Where do they choose to cut services? In an area where they know that others will do the fighting for them. Big Bad Bob 3/15/2014 1:07:21 PM Report

My take on Putin and the Ukraine is along the following lines:
1.When it comes to such values as individual freedom, rule of law and just plain honesty, for me political systems should not be illustrated by a straight line with the extreme right at one end and the extreme left at the other. They should be illustrated by a circle with Nazism and Communism placed side by side.
2.Before any of us ever heard of him, Putin was trained by the USSR’s KGB, its equivalent to Hitler’s Gestapo. Certain individuals hasten to point out that he is not a Communist. My answer to that is that even if a leopard could change its spots, it would still be a leopard; i.e. a potentially dangerous predator. Or as Shakespeare put it in another context, “What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."
3.Crimea was part of Russia for centuries before Krushchev attached it to the Ukraine for some obscure reason in 1954. Be that as it may, the Ukraine was already part of the USSR at the time and had been since 1922. In the succeeding decades, a substantial Russophone population accumulated in the eastern part of the Ukraine as in other component republics of the USSR including the Baltic States, Georgia and Moldovia. (Putin’s Russia already now has two illicit de facto enclaves in what is legally Georgia and one in Moldovia.)
4. As part of his scheme for a “Greater Germany”, Hitler coveted inter alia the Sudetenland, an important industrialized portion of former Czechoslovakia with a mainly German-speaking population. In September 1938, Chamberlain (UK) and Daladier (France) met with Hitler and Mussolini in Munich, in the absence of any representatives of Czechoslovakia or the USSR, and agreed to let Hitler have his way in the hope that this would ensure “peace in our time.” The rub is that Hitler did not stop with taking over the Sudetenland, he grabbed off all the rest of Czechoslovakia, which was peopled mostly by Slavs, as well.
5. Nobody including me wants a war just now. I believe, however, that Putin has his own scheme for a “Greater Russia.” The big question for me is “Where and when will he stop?” I am convinced that he will have no big problem grabbing off Crimea. But will he not want the eastern portion of Ukraine as well, if not the whole country as Hitler did with Czechoslovakia, for I am convinced that a free, democratic Ukraine would represent a danger for him with his particular values, capable of "contaminating" Russia in his view over the longer haul. And indeed, what more after that?

Just catching up on comments past couple days on wood stoves/pellet stoves. Here's a no-fee public service:

WOOD PELLETS 101:
From the Pellet Fuels Institute: cost to generate one million BTUs heat: oil, $37.52; electricity, $35.17; propane, $34.81; natural gas, $15.38 (and set to soar); wood pellets, $18,67;
seasoned hardwood, $16.67 (based on U.S. price for cord of wood).

Pellet stoves $1,700 to $3,000 and require minimum clearance and 4" direct vent pipe through the wall. Wood stove probably cheaper but buyers have to calculate in purchase and installation of approved chimney.

Heating with pellet stoves relatively new in North America but Europeans have been doing it for decades.

No hydro no heat? As already pointed out, some stoves come with 12 hour automatic battery backup, and for the handier, there are larger batter backup systems. Stoves can also be run off generators for those who have one. Average hydro cost to run pellet stove is $10 month.

Pellets are "manufactured"? Yes, from pure sawdust and wood shavings -- no additives, no chemicals. The binding agent is lignin, a natural product found in the wood, as in ALL wood. In that regard, stove wood is manufactured too, from logs and usually involving a gasoline or electric powered chainsaw and log splitter.

Irishfey is concerned that one day there'll be no more pellets. Don't worry, because when that happens it'll be because there are no more trees, and there won't be any more firewood either.

Bounder says, he had a chum who had one (pellet stove) and got rid of it. I had a friend once who had a Ford truck and got rid of it. So what?

Mr. Monty: says to make sure they're hardwood pellets. And that comment is the epitomy of ignorance about wood pellets. A block of hard maple stove wood is heavier than the same sized block of pine because it is denser. ALL pellets, hardwood and softwood, are made exactly the same way using the same equipment. They are compressed under extreme pressure to the same density, and once in the bags -- 40 lbs is 40 lbs. Same density, same weight.

saucy - the pellets you referred to from Lyon's are LacWoods, from Hearst, ON and you can get them at Goulais River Castle Building at Hwy. 17 and Pineshores. There was a short-term
supply problem this winter because of unprecedented customer demand caused by the cold and Lyon's bought another brand from southern Ontario.

Like anything else, you get what you pay for because there are varying levels of quality, and pellet stoves and wood pellets are no different. I save approximately $2,000/year having switched from oil to wood pellets, and that's after paying for the pellets. That fact alone makes me feel warm all over. I also keep one small oil stove in a front room as a backup because it is gravity fed and requires no hydro. And if I feel that I need some exercise, the dog and I go for a walk.

Forgot to mention too that pellets take up one-quarter of the space of stove wood needed to generate the same heat.

Just Curious 3/15/2014 3:03:40 PM Report

T-rat, now you've done it...Confusing people with facts..:). Wonder how long before someone will post arguing with you about it??. Wish they had had them when I had my place in Goulais.. Great lakes power was a tad expensive , to say the least..If I was a few years younger I would go off the grid entirely. With all the technology out there you can operate totally free of hydro, oil and gas (other than a back-up generator in case the wind doesn't blow for a week).

T-rat nice post and it's hard to get a point across when there are uneducated, uninformed morons debating every point you make. You are certainly going to confuse the hell out of them with facts. I had the stove for a year before I got around to installing mine but really liked it and it cut our hydro bill big time. Normal temps I run the stove on the lowest settings and if it's really, really cold I turn it up to the second setting for a few hours. Setting 1 burns about 3/4 of a bag per day and I figure I would burn about 1 1/2 bags on setting 2, but would have to open doors or windows then. When I renovated this place I added plenty of insulation, new doors and window etc.

BBB, as part of your point # 4. At the time, the German Sudeten Party "demanded" union with Germany.

Were riots.
In the news, the atrocities of slavics against germans were shown.
And hitler indicated Germany will support the Sudeten Germans with military action.

It's not that was given to Germany, because if you go back in history, you'll see that the original Germanic tribes settle there (not the Allemagni, but the Marcoomanni)(Also the Celtic and Boii tribes)

Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia were inhabited by germans (Sudetendeutsche) almost exclusively.

The reasons for Hitler to demand the annexation of that land was historic, I couldn't say right or wrong.

The areas of the Sudetenland registered the highest percentage of germans dead during the first world war.

All the areas of conflict during the first and the second world war are once again in conflict. Benghazi, Tobruk, Moldavia, Crimea, Ukraine, and whatever the name, if you go back in history, those were the greatest battles of the wars.

Putin kitchen is full of smoke. If you can understand that inequality, corruption and despotism are reasons for peoples discontent, then that's the soup need for the terrorists.

The difference between terrorism in the East and West is the final results. In the East, a cell takes by attack a theater with 300 people inside, the cossacks surround the theater and bomb it all from outside, killing three terrorist and 300 innocents. Then Putin is invited to witness justice "a la russa" and he shows up in his Hog wearing a bandana and his bare hairless chest while his 22 year old wife makes selfies.

In the West, the same three terrorist take over a theater with 300 persons inside. The police free the hostages, kill three terrorists and keep one alive to obtain the necessary information, then they execute him as it's no longer needed, but not before the survivor terrorist exhaust all the rights conceded by the law of the West and fancy the most expensive lawyers a man can have. All paid for.

Do I want to hear that Canada is giving money to the Ukraine, no, but I bet there are hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian Canadians who do. History belongs to the victors in any war, for they write it, the latest is the Taliban saying they defeated the Canadians because they are leaving, the same will be said when all the other nations pull out of that country, and in five years it will just be a footnote on the pages of history, and they will be in the same position as they were before we went into that god foresaken country.

A friend of mine has a 2004 Honda and just spent over 800 bucks to change the ignition switch.. She will never buy another one. It's whatever mops your floor...:).

Just Curious: out here on the shores of Superior I certainly get wind (like today) and generally lot of sun. Wish I had the understanding, not to mention the investment dollars, to let me get off the grid but alas, looks like I'll just have to bear it.

bounder: when Mallet posted about "wood stoves" you replied, "right you are about pellet stoves". He didn't say anything about pellet stoves, and then followed your remark about a chum who got rid of his pellet stove. If somebody buys a cheap pellet stove, burns cheap, crappy pellets or ignores recommended maintenance schedules and the stove doesn't live up to expectations, I'd get rid of it too but I wouldn't damn the whole process.

T Rat..

I am going to drop by one of these days, when we have about 30 below and a good nor-easter blowing just to check out how good your pellet stove is. The main thing to have is back-up for heating and or hydro, especially when we live in an area that sucks for rapid restoration of services. GLP made it easy and cheap for the first subdivisions to have hydro by putting the main line near the cottages, which was great except the area expanded and now those lines go through the lands of people who are not there in winter but have trees that do fall on the lines and now there is little access as there is along the road which is plowed.. But to get back to the pellet verus woodstove, I guess it is whatever is your preference, while I am able, I like the airtight woodstove, with the glass door, when I am unable maybe I shall go to the pellet or have the wood delivered cut and split.
mallet 3/15/2014 5:38:40 PM Report

Just Curious..

You know whatever is man made will have flaws, some intentional, others just accidental. All car manufacturers have recalls for things that escaped the tests that are made, some are lemons others not so. Many years ago when I worked automotive in the old country we had a broken down Rolls Royce come into the shop, silly problem, fuse kept shorting out, a gasket had been left off a light fixture and as soon as it got wet it fused the lights, took 3 weeks to get a replacement gasket, but it was a whole light fixture that was sent and the old one had to be returned. I see that GM is likely to be sued for the ignition switch problem they had, guess the designers did not realise that people were going to hang everything but the kitchen sink from the key chain...

I am not sure anymore satellites will do any good, or keeping the Diego Garcia, nice and clean is the answer. I think it devolves around who will make the move the use a few megatons first and to hell with the P. C. of doing so. So there will be some collateral damage, so what, they kill each other now, so what's the difference, bullet, IED, A or H bomb, dead is dead, just the number is different.

Bobby the racist himself said that terrorism is born when people are oppressed... there's the answer.

The west needs to pull out of the middle east... all of it. .... but I guess our monetary interests won't let us. So we stay, and interfere, and fan the flames of discontent in a people who just want us to leave them alone.

Jimssm.

I am sure we could discuss this for a while, I am not sure that throwing acid in the face of a girl who just wants to learn is Moral, or driving a car filled with explosives into a market where there are women and children and detonating it, is being very much of a human being. If being oppressed by your own is different to being oppressed by another country which is trying to help you, I guess I am lost. I do not say wipe out all Muslims, however there are some spots which it would be nice to flatten and then just make large parking lots of them. Guerilla wars are vitually impossible to win, I think that the U K was only successful in what was Burma, but as soon as we left it was back to the same old systems as before, and only a iron fist keeps it "lawful" if you can call it that...

I totally agree with you that we, as Canada, should stay out of all the quarrels and let them sort themselves out and then if asked, see if it is right to help. All the protest movements that this country has supported has turned out to be mistakes, Libya has no government three years after we intervened, the military has taken control of Egypt again and the Syrian opposition still has no real goal, they just want heavy arms, and now the Ukraine, we should back away and let things sort themselves out, and then help afterwards, just like we do after natural disasters..

Mallet, jimssm sees it in a different way, and I respect it.

I'm not into the pissing contest, then he can hold his opinion, I respect that and he should respect my opinion and refrain himself from calling me racist.

Dissent, bias, profiling and prejudice are all part of a discussion and if a person do not accept that, then is not discussing an issue, it's only imposing he/r/s view.

Let's go to the Palestinian and Israel conflict. Each time there is an intention of sharing a table and negotiate, the rockets and vandalism starts on the side of the palestinians. I know it's hard to have an opinion about it, but as I see it, there are sectors in the palestinian side that are interested in no peace because they are the few that have the villas in the french riviera and the rest of the people suffers, and the best they can do is blame the jews, the europeans, the egyptians, the usa, they blame anyone but themselves.

Putin has only one good thing, terror fears only terror.

Tell me why the muzzies from Kazakhstan hate the americans? Give me a good reason.

BTW: the Inmarsat triangulation of the T7 put it at 08.11 Malaysia time, over Kazakhstan.

I'll put you up to date Shake:

" Based on the new data, aviation authorities of Malaysia and counterparts in other countries have determined that the plane's last satellite communication came from one of two corridors, Mr. Najib said: a northern one stretching approximately from the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan border to northern Thailand or a southern one stretching approximately from Indonesia to the southern Indian Ocean.

If Flight 370 traveled north, it might have been above Thailand, China, Myanmar, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan or Turkmenistan at 8.11 a.m., according to the satellite data released by Kuala Lumpur. However, it would have needed to fly through the airspace of several countries to have reached that point, and it is unlikely that it could have done so undetected, especially if it passed close to China or India, both of which have air-defense systems.

AND THE PLANE WAS FUELED FOR ABOUT 8 HOURS FLIGHT
"The routine messages sent by the aircraft show that Flight 370 was still airborne nearly six hours after it disappeared from Malaysian military radar. The Boeing BA +1.00% 777-200 plane with 239 people on board was carrying enough fuel to fly for eight hours, Malaysia Airlines confirmed on Saturday"

Bobby Nerves 3/15/2014 10:09:50 PM Report

tp, there is something that no one is talking about. The airline didn't sale 50 seats for that flight.

Someone with knowledge says that's an indication of a heavy load (cargo) and it's presumed around 3 tons (gold?) then the path of the airplane make sense to Somalia. A retired general in the States said in a TV interview discussing the issue, that the plane was somewhere in Pakistan or Somalia.

The path and the time make sense, but there is not an evidence of it. Neither against it.

If you are serious about investing it sounds to me that you would be way better off working with a good broker/adviser.But, and this is a big but,one that you can have confidence in and is competent is very hard to find. I have been into that stuff for over 30 years and just found one a couple years ago.I noticed Grump does not mind to post his e mail addy here so maybe you could email him and he could put you on to one.
