Good Morning one and all!

Good morning David and everyone still snoozing. Bounder I can understand a pellet stove being too complicated for you also you probably replaced original parts with mopar. I don't think Chrysler has much experience with pellet stoves. lol. The big thing for me is you can put your hand directly on the outlet pipe and not burn you hand so it certainly is much safer. As I said I bought 150 bags at 4.00 each, still have 30 or 40 bags left and have cut roughly 200 per month off my hydro bill. If I were not taking dead trees off the properties I take care of and using them for firewood I would likely get rid of the wood stove in the shop. Next time you need operating instructions or good advice on where to shop send the message "please help". LMAO. Have a great day all, you too bonehead.

rw, I believe you re: pellet stoves. There's more to go wrong with them too. Also, I don't like the fact that they depend on electricity...no power equals no heat. They're more expensive and they use a manufactured product. Not for me! I've been doing a lot of googling the past year with regards to wood stoves. There are some great forums and information out there!! Really helpful in understanding how to maximize the efficiency of a wood stove.

Javaman, it is interesting how things seem to be going full circle. Getting a woodlot would be great!

Mallet/bounder, I too like the idea of the exercise/work involved with handling of the wood. A splitter would be nice. I was surprised to see how expensive they are! I'm just going to have to buy my hardwood split already.

My electricity costs will drop by at least $1000 a year, probably more considering electricity rates are going up every year for the next few years. The cost of wood to heat this little house may cost me $400 a year tops!

40%, and with the added taxes will round 50% and it will average $ 400 a year increase per household.

Sadly we are in the hands of speculators, the foods we eat have no substance, no nutrition values and the price is handled by speculator and the same is happening with the energy we need to make our houses livable.

Pink Peony

Pellet stoves do not use much electricity.
The auger which loads pellets into the burning pot and the fan(s) are about it.
I used to purchase the pellets by the skid but I found if you did not purchase a good quality pellet the same heat was not realized and your burning pot would get plugged up.
I did not see any significant savings on heating cost but the pellet stove was easy to operate and completely approved by the insurance company.
I suppose if you were using electricity as a heat source given the cost today one might realize a savings.

Wood stove technology has come a long ways and once the installation is certified you can get insurance.
You can't beat the heat from a wood fire.

PINK ,
yes good exercise, I use to cut everything and then split it all and then pile it, saved myself some boredom by cutting a few logs splitting and piling right away , built my own log splitter , had it fourteen years and works just fine.
Pink Peony 3/14/2014 8:52:58 AM Report

It seems that certain necessities, like fuel and electricity for example, just keep climbing and climbing in price. It's as if the people who manufacture and/or sell these things know that people need them and will always pay for them, so they raise the prices in order to get more profit. I see the same thing happening with manufactured pellets too as pellet stoves are becoming more popular. It was no surprise to me that natural gas was going to climb in price. I truly hate supporting greedy companies!! If have a choice, I will choose to not support them.
irishfey 3/14/2014 8:54:43 AM Report

Pink Peopy.... This is our 2nd. Winter here and with our load of logs ( cost $900.00) and we will have enough left for next winter , maby two more. We have a med. size home but as i said before, we have a very large window that gets the sun all day. I always am leary that the power may go out and try and have backups for everything if it does. Someone said that the Pellet stove was cool to the touch? Well, we can cook on the top of ours if needed. You know that sometimes when you purchase a product then a few years down the road you need a part for it and find out that they are out of stock or are not making them any more for some stupid reason like they are to be found hazzardous (??,lol) to your health? Well that"s one of the reasons we didn"t get one.. maby one day there are no more pellets. In an extreme case, there is always something you can burn in a woodstove.. always scraps of wood available,, pAllets, shrub, trim, books etc.... you get my drift... We have a small gas heater downstairs so now i will invest in one of those Infra red heaters to cut out that cost and if the power does fail, then we still have the gas we can put back on... A generater is always a handy thing to have too.... Good luck in your choice,, but i would urge you to go with wood.

Irish, I like the fact that I will be able to cook on my wood stove too!! The other things you mentioned, yes, I've also considered in making my decision a couple of years ago. I just had to save for it and now I'm ready! Woohoo :) My house is small, one level and no basement, just a crawl space. Very well insulated too. I had the heat in the LR off the day before yesterday and yesterday, didn't even turn it on at night and it stayed at 65F in the house, yesterday it dropped to 62F. I think I may find it too warm with my wood stove but like you, I can always open a window or the door.

sAUCEY 3/14/2014 9:38:25 AM Report

I have a pellet stove and, i understand about the manufactored product but they are actaully made cleaner than wood. also yes it does depend on electricity so no power no heat but i have gas forced air as a back up for my home and some new pellet stoves now have an emergency option where if the power goes out it has a 12 hour back up battery. i purchase my pellets at rona, they are made in Quebec and throw a lot of nice heat, i have bought the ones from east end lyons and they are by far the best but never in stock. its important to read the ash amount aswell as i found that american pellets required me to clean my stove much more often..

Just Curious 3/14/2014 9:50:19 AM Report

saucy, um, gas forced air means no power, no heat there either. I used to have an old dinosaur gravity furnace in one house I owned. It took up half the basement but you always had heat no matter what..:).And it really doesn't matter how you try, if you don't have your own wood you are still lining someone's pockets. I can't get over how much they get for a face cord of wood now. A cord of wood used to be a cord of wood and it took two trips with a pickup to get it home...:)

Wisenheimer, do you know of any good sites that talk about how to play the stock market? Detailed and clear sites that talk about what to watch for, when to invest, when to pull out, etc. Do you HAVE to go through a broker? I remember going to the Toronto Stock Exchange many years ago. Not sure what took me there, maybe it was a school trip, I don't remember. What I do remember is that it was a madhouse in there!!

Just Curious.. Glad you outlasted the " Dinosaur". hee hee... What ever route we take, we have to pay. My Hubby wanted to buy cords instead of the logs, less work for him i know, but we got the logs ( cheaper that way ).. He splits,, i pile. He won"t let me use the chainsaw??? I wonder if it"s because when he wanted me to learn to use the snowblower,, He was an instant snowman in a few seconds ,lol.. He never asked me to do it again!.. What harm could i do with a chainsaw??? :)
mr.monty 3/14/2014 10:15:43 AM Report

last year I put in an outdoor water furnace. it heats my garage and my house. it also heats my hot water. this unit uses a re-burner, this takes the smoke and gas from the wood and burns it a 2nd time. a lot less smoke than my wood furnace. if you use a pellet stove. make sure you are buying hardwood pellets. as for firewood, my son is a logger and told me that tandem loads are now selling for up to $1400. people are selling a cord of wood for $100. I have a wood lot and a home made splitter. as for the exercise. i get lots of that.

Pink Peony..

Yes the initial cost of a splitter is high, but there is an alternative, if you are not going to burn that much you can rent one for about 50$ a day, get a crew of relatives and friends and you can have a tandem load bucked up and split in about 3/4 days at most. You could also look round to see if anyone near had a splitter they would lend you on a barter system..
Pink Peony 3/14/2014 11:30:50 AM Report

Taliban issues congratulations to its forces on 'defeat' of Canadians

A round of goodbye messages are following the last Canadian troops out the door in Afghanistan and some of them are rather nasty.
"Your sacrifices have brought us freedom. The beacons of your blood have lit the way to independence. Celebrate the victory and freedom from the Canadians," said the statement, written in Pashtu, but translated for The Canadian Press.

Pinky
I pay $1000.00 bucks for a load, usually get 22 to 23 chords out of it , a face chord 4ft high by 8ft long and 16 inches in length goes for around 90 to 100 bucks , so about half price and last 2 years. I cut every second year, use to get half loads and cut every year but now they don't do half loads , not worthwhile for them. Hope this helps.

I have a gas fireplace in my home. It can throw so much heat it often overwhelms my furnace thermostat and the Furnace does not come on. I generally keep the gas fireplace set very low because of this.

I used to say that if the power went out on the furnace then I had a good emergency backup heat supply. Guess what? I was wrong.Last week during a several hour power outage I turned the gas fireplace to full. It turns out that without the electric fans that are built into the fireplace most of the heat goes up the chimney. The house was cooling rapidly steadily until the power returned and the furnace sprang back in to action.

I guess we could all have stood right around the fireplace and stayed warm but I'm definitely disappointed with it as a source of home heat during a power failure. The wood or pellet burning stoves are sounding better and better. X

Been away for a while and noticed the discussion about woodstoves. Was there any discussion about the relative merits of the two types of higher efficiency stoves, the catalytic versus those with an air-injected combustion chamber?

heres the deal folks, Canada had desert camo, and the digi camo, which was candian invented was sold to the us military
the government treated this men great, they got a good wage, pension and benefits, plus valuable life experience, way more than the americans!

This men fought hard and fough strong and be proud of them, the fight wasn't over oil and any solider who is saying that to you didn't go over to fight.. probably went to flip pankcakes on the S.S Syrup..

Protector

You are right in declaring how wrong our government is in not taking care of our returning war veterans, but your implication that this is a problem created by conservatives because they are conservatives is off the mark.

On March 26, 2013 the Institute of Medicine in the US released a report to Congress indicating that US veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan were suffering from inadequate care for their problems as well. There was a high rate of post-traumatic stress syndrome, suicide, unemployment, etc. All the same problems reported by Canadian veterans. But in the US, the government isn't conservative, but liberal (the Democrats). So it's apparent that although the problems you identify are real, the cause really has little to do with whether the government is conservative or liberal. A liberal minded government is just as capable and willing it seems, to abandon their veterans as a conservative minded one is.
Jimssm 3/14/2014 3:39:03 PM Report

Saucy...

To say the government treats / treated it's soldiers / vets well is simply not true and you know it.

What many soldiers say about being there...not because of oil... more like 'why are we here ?'. Most had no idea... just putting in the time til they could come back.

Pay...ok

Pension... ok if you don't get sick before you qualify.

After you get back ?.... forget it

Life experience ???... you've got to be kidding. Suicides and post traumatic stress because of 'life experiences'.

....From PERSONAL experience.....

There has always been wars , from "way" back when, and there will always "be" wars, only this time with the Taliban and Islam etc.involved,, there will be no peace in any Country until the Islamic religion turns the infidels (us) to their way of life and religion. This is stated in the Qur"an! I stated before.. that any person that serves his or hers Country, should be paid more than all the Presidents and PM"s put together!... It is an outright disgrace and shame the way the vets and their family"s are treated!!...

Good to see Harper going to the Ukraine next week to try and calm down a bad situation. Obama goes on holidays (third time so far this year) leaving Mr. Ketchup to whine to Putin. The U.S. slowly sinks into political oblivion.

Anything is better than a President who is so far out in left field he can't figure out a bank card machine in a grocery store. As for having a "short time left" obama might as well just stay on permanent vacation with his brood. All on the taxpayers dime no doubt. Most. Useless. POTUS. Ever.
Bobby Nerves 3/14/2014 5:46:21 PM Report

tp, is not about what they did or not. It's about the pictures. Check the publication in that link, it's in German, but you'll realize what the picture is all about.

It's weird that in the picture they are the same body. There is an explanation from a thai policeman, that he folded the original when doing a photocopy.

I was just pointing that it's weird, like everything, it start with a little hole, and then another and another, till finally all the holes line up and then it's to late.

It's not a conspiracy theory, just that things are presented that way. The AC started with the wrong foot when they lost total contact and didn't report. That's a human error there. The rest, we'll only know when they find the bird and the passengers.

David P.,
What a sad ending to a pretty much predictable war. Canadian soldiers (I think it was 158) killed and many injured. For what?? Very sad indeed.

You folks should have been tuned into CBC radio.
They had veterans from the Afghanistan war on that told their stories about all they had accomplished for the Afghan people.
The stories were many and they were told with the utmost pride.

I would have dared any one of you to call in and say to them young men "for what", you'd get your nuts handed to you real quick.
