Good morning everyone, yesterday gave us all some hope for the arrival of spring. Interesting thought last evening Snobank about Mrs.B. Could Gurpy be a new, slightly saner version of Marissa? Better meds? If it's not the same woman then it's the same problem. Have a great day all.

Good Morning Grump!

Think i might take some time off and do a wee bit of Spring cleaning,,, Spring "is" coming isn"t it ? ,lol... Have a good day folks....

Hunter please explain why you thought that calling me a “welfare case” was an insult last night when I expressed my opinion regarding the so called flag of Canada? You for one should be ok with the flag being altered since it is French Canadian origin and therefore fundamentally against your basic belief that all things need to be English to be Canadian. However I would like you to explain why you believe people who are on social assistance need to be viewed in a negative light? The vast majority of people who are unfortunately on “welfare” are people that don’t want to be caught in that stigma you saddle them with. And are struggling to make ends meet and do things to better themselves. Perhaps not always in the manner that meets your all so very important approval, but nonetheless an effort to please your royal blood. Yes yes of course we hear of people abusing the system, it happens with all social programs, actually it happens with all programs. I am hunter did your mom (and your dad - if you know who he is) sue the birth control manufacturer since they must have been so disappointed when you were born and then to live such a disappointing life. It is clear that they could sue for damages!

Pro... I don"t know if your on Wefare and it"s really none of my business. But you are right on some things,, It"s the bad apples that abuse the system that makes it hard on the folk that really need it. Being on Wefare is nothing to be ashamed about if one can not find work,, one has to have a roof over their head and eat,, no? And what Welfare pays out, i wonder how a person can even survive on it.. I "think "a single person only gets around 600.00 plus... You can"t even get an apartment for that let alone all the other things they need like food, phone, t.v etc... sad...

french origin sorry it is - this flag has actually been traced bace to the 1800s in Quebec. Yep it has, again sorry, lestor old boy didnt have that much to do with it, well in all honesty not much to do with anything for this country.
Besides its a flag, big deal, the flag should not be respected - the people it represents should act in such a way that they are respected and therefore identifed by the flag indicating a people that have earned respect. Canada was there but sadly not any longer.

The maple leaf symbol made its first documented appearance in Montreal in 1836, when the president of the fledgling Société-Saint-Jean-Baptiste told those gathered for its third annual banquet, “The maple leaf is the king of our forest; it is the emblem of our Canadian people.” By “Canadian” he meant “Canadien,” or French-Canadian, but it wasn’t long before Anglo-Canadians adopted the maple leaf as their own. When the Prince of Wales (the future Edward VII) visited British North America in 1860, native-born Upper Canadians wore “a maple leaf as an emblem of the land of their birth.”

Cnristina 216, My little place is basically 2 fairly large rooms plus a small kitchen and bathroom. When I signed up for equal billing it was 170 a month and I darned near fainted. I have been on it since October and being up there I like it warm and so far I am just about even. I don't know what the last tenant did with her power but I'm way ahead of what she used. I made sure all the windows were sealed and the door adjusted so it closed tight and had the Landlord get me a new thermostat as one of them wasn't reacting properly. I cook a lot also, and I replaced all the lights bulbs with the squirrely bulbs. With every light in the apartment on I don't burn 100 watts. There must be something wrong with your meter if you are paying that much..:(.

there is a lot wrong with my house. the first problem is the landlord. she thinks because it doesnt need to be fixed on her house yet it shouldnt on mine. she makes me feel bad whenever i fo call and inquire about a repair.second is my house is 35+ years old. so probably (more than likely) original windows and doors.
its so easy for people to SAY move. not in my case.

Should you decide to file with the Landlord & Tenant Board for repairs, I think the charge is $170.00 but you will get that back. Take pictures, put all your complaints in writing and document EVERYTHING! That way, she cannot deny ever receiving your complaints.

Just Curious 3/11/2014 10:18:19 AM Report

Christina216; Know what you are saying about being stuck in a place and about an unreasonable landlord. This guy I rent from is more than fair with me.. He provides the part and I change it, gives me something to do once in a while..
There are a lot of little things you can do yourself that will help your heating costs and whether or not your landlord will pay you back is kinda immaterial if it saves you a bunch of money. I gave up a long time ago asking for a lot, I just go ahead and do it. Sometimes I got paid back, sometimes I didn't, but it improved my lifestyle to do it anyway.. I know sometimes a person can't afford major repairs but with a bit of careful shopping not much is out of reach. Restore is a great place..:)
Gurpy 3/11/2014 10:23:30 AM Report

Your advice to Christina216 is good. One problem though, these landlords deliberately leave repairs EXPECTING the tenant to give in and do it themselves. If they don`t want the hassle, they need to get out of the business! I`ve done a few things myself out of my own pocket. Should I ever move, the improvements I`ve made are quite easily undone and will be coming with me!
Just Curious 3/11/2014 10:33:07 AM Report

Gurpy; My TV is on(36in old style)from eyes open to eyes closed, my computer is always on and I cook whenever I need to, not when the time is cheaper. Most times there is never more than 2 9w lights on and never lights on in an empty room. The heat is set exactly the same in all rooms and comfortable (22-23c). I never waste time getting in and out my door and I come and go every couple of hours with my dog. I never open my fridge without knowing exactly what I want first and rarely ever open the door all the way. I don't know if any of this makes a difference overall or not but I like what little comfort I can get out of life anymore and if it costs me a few dollars more a month, so be it. If I have to cut back one bottle a month it's not a biggie.:)...lol.
Just Curious 3/11/2014 10:42:49 AM Report

Gurpy; A little story about perspectives. Years ago now a friend of mine signed a 10 year lease on a house in London as he had a contract for that long for a job he had. The first thing he did was install central air in the house, knowing he couldn't take it with him. It set him back $1000 to do it. I thought he was crazy at first but $100 a year wouldn't buy and operate 3 window ACs and he had whole house comfort year around. It's all a matter of how long you plan to stay. May not work for everyone but it did for him..:)

How about another topic.

Seems Farmer Schmidt has lost his battle to allow people to drink fresh cows milk as the health ministry deems this to be a danger to the public. At the same time the federal government is considering allowing genetically altered salmon and eggs to be consumed. So in this day and age, something that is natual has to be processed and that which is not natural, can be consumed although the original intent was perhaps something completely different than was first use of the product. Something does not seem correct here, I have to ask where is the logic in the people who make up the rules??

Gurpy..

This is the double standard... If you are a farmer you can drink the milk from your cows direct, however you cannot sell it direct it has to go through the pasturisation process before it can be sold to the general public..

And another topic...

Colorado legalised pot, and for the first month they were allowed to sell the state made $2.1 million in taxes. Obama now says it is no worse than alcohol, so I am thinking the Feds will soon be getting in on the tax thingy for pot as well. When comparing how much it costs to police, prosecute, inprision as opposed to legalising and taxing, I think anyone with an ounce of logic will go for the later. Of course there will be a lot of resistance from the Lawyer Lobby from losing all the defence funds, but hey, you can't please everyone...And of course he, Obama, can claim victory in the war on drugs!!! LOL..

If I had the option of moving to the country and growing all my own produce, having my own cows, chickens etc and feeding them what I know to be safe, I would go that route! That would be a dream come true for me!
DutchTouch 3/11/2014 2:11:00 PM Report

Mallet, I agree that logic has gone out the door. I really hoped that farmer Schmidt would win his case.

But when you really stop to think of it, cattle are injected or fed all kinds of crap these days. Drugs are put into everything to make food (safer???)
or more plentiful. Factory farms are the most inhumane and unreal facts of meat production. Insecticides and antibiotics are in most farm produced foods along with additives to make them appear fresher and more palatable for the spoiled rotten people of the western world to consume.

It's really sad that what made our generation healthy doesn't cut it anymore.

Are our kids and grandkids healthier consuming all these modified foods? There are more allergies than ever before and new diseases no one ever heard of.

Our own health departments are scratching their heads as what to do next.

It is too late to be going back to basics and logics in agriculture.
mallet 3/11/2014 2:16:32 PM Report

I can only say it is the double standard that gets to me. If a farmer, his wife, and kids can drink cows milk direct from the cow, why cannot I. The difference today from the old days when the rules were first brought in was the fear of TB, all herds today are TB tested and if found to have the desease removed from the herd. The only difference is that fresh cows milk will go "off" very quickly thus making it unattractive for stores to hold and sell, hence the "best before date". So I am thinking it is a business problem more than a public health one...

During the winter, after my eyes get too tired for reading I watch a lot of TV. I know that most shows are just for entertainment value but some have a little bit of truth in them especially some of the CSI shows. One dealt with farming on the corporate scale and the risk/cost venture. It involved someone getting botulism poisioning, from contaiminated water being sprayed on crops and being entered into the human food chain. the end result was that the corporate idea was that it was the only way to keep the cost of food down, or risk stavation. My uncle was a farmer in the old country, he farmed 400 acres and was also a contractor, He did not believe in modern methods and farmed the old fashioned way in the 4 rotation system fallow/grazing root cereal hay, would not have any artifical fertiliser or pesticide people on the farm, and had pretty good crops year after year. Today I am not sure what is being put into the food chain, some are trying the "organic" route, but I am not sure how that is going. As with all the food additives for longer self life, I am of the opinion that a lot, wouldn't hazzard a guess how many, but the various disorders kids suffer from today are caused by a lot of these additives whether it be the attention deficit or allergies, maybe my attention wondered at school at times but I never had allergies..

They want to legalize pot! Why? It is a mind altering drug is it not? We have enough unstable people lurking around due to mind altering prescription meds. Many of these people would be near normal without the the pushy medical professionals who are making a lot of money at the expense of others.
Most of the psychiatric meds cause the same in side effects as the reason they were prescribed.
The main objective is to lable as many as possible as "mental health" wether they are or not! Liberal government=massive funding for mental health. Justin Trudeau`s mom suffered with depression. I think she still does.
It is over diagnosed and widely abused by people wanting to get onto a disability.
Someone with a mental illness will qualify before an applicant with physical issues only. Someone could apply with anxiety and a sore back only and get it before someone whose mind is still okay but a mess physically. Doesn`t make sense at all!

Colorado has legalised the sale and possesion of pot and Washington state does so this April. I think anyone will agree that that particular "war on drugs" has been lost for a long time, so why not make it legal and tax it like they do alcohol, I see the LCBO makes a healthy profit for Ontario every year. Also this would probably cut down on the petty crime associated with the drug trade. Manufactured drugs is another matter altogether and the offence would not be plea bargained for pusher, user or manufacturer. Which means the police would have time to deal with the "hard" drug trade. I have never heard of anybody overdosing on pot but the others many times, just look at the celebs who are no longer with us...

It is interesting you mention Korean Airline Flight 007 that went down on September 1st,1983.
In 1990 I worked in Syracuse NY.One Friday the office I worked for went out to a Bar in Rome NY to celebrate a girl's 25th birthday who worked in our office. This bar was located close to an Air Force Base as there were a lot of Military personnel in the bar.I was
probaly the only Canadian in the Bar.Coincidentally one of the girl's I worked with introduced me to an older gentleman who was stationed at Kincheloe early in his Air Force career. He knew a lot about Soo Canada and we struck up a conversation over a few beer. I asked him about Korean Flight 007 as to what may have taken place. He told me that everything he was going to say would be strictly off the record. He repeated this off the record claim at least 5 times.
In 1983 we were in the middle of an intense cold war with the Soviet Union. What country could the USA coerce to fly a commercial flight into Soviet airspace to perform some kind of spying mission? The plane would have to perform this mission on a very clear night in order to take clear pictures.
The South Korean commercial airline would fly into New York. The commercial pilots would then probaly switch with South Korean Military pilots debriefed at the Air Force Base in Rome NY.Fly to Anchorage Alaska for refuelling before heading to Toykyo Japan. This would not be the first time or last time that commercial flights were used to perform
tasks for the USA military. The Korean Flight 007 was definately off route in Soviet air space. The Soviets were probaly at the point of zero tolerance (Commercial or Military) of any plane flying illegally into their air space particularly in the midst of a Cold war with Reagan and the USA.
This bar talk over a few beer always stayed with me. The taking down of Korean Flight 007 was probaly not the accident the USA government made it out to be.
