Good morning everyone and you as well David. Sparks you are right about some hunters. Three of us used to hunt and fish together and there were always someone we worked with or a friend who wanted to come along. All of them good fellows with a brain in their head, so we thought. You were taking your life in your hands just being in the bush with them. There seemed to be something about getting a gun in their hands that turned them into complete morons. I wonder if that's what happened to some of the poor souls on here? Have a great day all.

I don't know where some of you hunt (or who with)but the hunters that I know are smart, law abiding, respectful of nature, safety conscious individuals.
If you ever had trouble in the bush they would be the right there to help.
This is what makes up most hunters, not the drunken, law breaking dangerous morons that Grump hunts with.
right wing 3/6/2014 9:17:40 AM Report

"Record cold temperatures, near record ice cover and record breaking snowfall have all impacted the water levels of the Great Lakes, creating the possibility of significantly above average seasonal rises for the second consecutive year.

The extreme winter conditions has impacted all the Great Lakes to varying degrees, said Kirk Kompoltowicz, chief of watershed hydrology with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

With many areas receiving record or near-record snowfalls, the snow-water equivalent, which has an impact on Great Lake water levels, has increased the average depth in each of the Great Lake basins, he said.

Lake Superior and Lake Michigan-Huron have reached their highest levels in the past decade."

Now you see, you can study the water levels all you like, spend thousands on "what to do", when "we" can't do anything about such things.
Only Mother Nature can.
A couple of more winters like this one with some rainy spring weather and we can read all the complaints about the high water levels.
Then the nut case politicians will spend thousands again on studies as to what "we" can do to lower the lake levels.
...and so the cycles go.

notpc 3/6/2014 9:58:36 AM Report

The talk here about the Great Lakes freezing over makes me wonder how the global warmists are going to interpret this.

In the Green section of Sootoday, on January 10, the writer there gave an indication of how they might try to rationalize global warming in the face of extreme cold. He suggested that, get ready for it, global warming is responsible for the "deepening of the polar vortex". He then went through a convoluted, theoretical explanation as to how the extreme cold this winter is further evidence of global warming.

Funny how when it's hotter than normal it's evidence of global warming and when it's colder than normal, it's evidence too. Makes you wonder what would be evidence disproving global warming.

Of course the earth did warm some from the mid 1980's until a couple years ago, just like it has in the past. But it's not warming now. It's amusing watching global warmists trying to tell us otherwise.
right wing 3/6/2014 10:08:15 AM Report

That is why it is no longer referred to as "global warming".

The official order of tittle changes is.... Man driven/global warming/climate change/pause.

I refer to it as all of the above.
Climate change was the most clever as how can anyone argue that our climate does not change.
The reality is our climate could change on a drastic level but if it does there ain't squat we can do about it.
I just hope it heads for the warming period as long as I'm on this blue ball and not the cooling.
I really don't want to move out of Canada.
I'd rather grow palm trees up here.

notpc and RW..

This is the first time I have ever heard of "The Polar Vortex". I guess they had to come up with a name for the weather pattern this year and that sounded a real "gimicky" name for the cold weather/reason. I am just guessing, but if we have a real warm summer it will be called a "tropical vortex" just think of all the items that can have "vortex" after them...

Snobank 3/6/2014 11:43:46 AM Report

Serious but slightly weird question: If you were to discover a member of your family had passed away of natural causes in their bed in your home, what is the required protocol? Who do you call first? The funeral home, the hospital, the police or some other agency?

No, no one has died in my house but we are all getting of an age where it might well happen. Not a pleasant thought but it's a situation that could well occur and I have no idea what the right or wrong things are to do if that situation arose. Any advice or knowledge from personal experience would be appreciated.
Wicket 3/6/2014 11:51:15 AM Report

Not sure, but I think the police first, the body cannot be moved until the coroner arrives on the scene to verify death and issue certificate, then the funeral home can be called. If any sign of life is suspected, then the ambulance should be called first.

The Revolution movie you referred us to is a beautiful movie that has some relevant points to make, especially concerning pollution and its long term effects on the environment. Its problem was that it was so focused on getting out that message that it wandered into making unprovable claims.

For example, Rob Stewart, the creator of the movie declares unequivocally that CO2 is a major cause of harm to the environment, primarily I suppose through global warming. The problem with that claim is that graphs show that there is really no correlation between man-produced CO2 emissions and higher world temperatures throughout man's history. Many of the highest temperatures on earth occurred before industrialization.

Second, Stewart attacks Alberta's oil sands by showing extensive footage of the surface mining done to extract bitumin. Yet he fails to note that the open pit mining in his pictures only make up 2% of the area of the oil sands and that this area produces only 20% of the oil produced. He also never said anything about the reclamation of those open pits that the companies MUST do by law. He never mentioned that green house gas production from the oil sands has dropped 38% from 1990 to 2009. It is lower than that of any of the production areas in Saudi Arabia, Venezuela or Nigeria.

My point is that even though Stewart had some useful points to make, his unwillingness to present a balanced picture ruined his credibility.

What you said about the sun is probably a lot more relevant to temperature than CO2. Many scientists say that sun spot activity correlates better with the earth's temperature than CO2 levels, although global warmists tend to try to dispute that.

T-rat 3/6/2014 2:15:58 PM Report

rw: I've been out here on the shores of beautiful Lake Superior for 15 years and water levels have never returned to the high levels we had when I first got here. And every summer is different but I can say that levels appear to be gradually rising and getting better. This prolonged, cold winter aside, the ice cover will certainly help sustain lake levels.

Now....there's the case of poor Mallet who has been lamenting on the other site what water temps are going to do to his anatomy when he has to venture into the lake to install his water intake as soon as the ice leaves. If you can imagine a turtle resting its beak on a couple of raisins.....OK...walnuts, well you get the picture, which is probably going to be too graphic a mental image for irishfey.

So, how 'bout we lend a hand. Grump can pull the intake out into the lake, while you feed him the line (something you do anyway), Mallet can provide the beer, Weisen can cheer Grump on, and Irishfey and Peony can bring cookies. I'll record all for SooToday news. Could be an annual event.

If you need more convincing than that, you're a zealot and you want to believe in global warming. You want to believe it so badly that you can't see the facts don't support it.

Temperatures were hotter before the industrial revolution, we had more ice on Superior this year than we did in '76.

Also mvnnth, the people who fund those global warming studies have very deep financial interests in green companies. Of course they are going to pay for a study which supports their claims and business.

It's just like studies on drugs. If a drug company has an interest in a drug, they will fund the study and maybe even throw in a few extra bucks to keep the scientist "with a clear mind."

All I am pointing out is if you want to back up your position by posting links fine...(everybody knows I'm all for googling) but make it easy for folks to hook up to it.
When I see links that I know I have to carefully omit parts to work, re-type or copy and paste in the address bar and half the time they don't work...I just scroll on by.

The same can be said of those that fund studies on the opposing side.
Oil companies as an example.
The bottom line is...climate change exists and has since the big bang that may have created our special floating blue ball.
The question is do you believe that an event of this enormous size is man driven by C02 that is created by man/the industrial evolution.
I personally don't.
I believe that given that our planet is in what is basically the "atmosphere of the sun", that our planets warming and cooling is driven by solar events.
Again I point out, do not confuse climate change with man made pollution as they are not the same thing.

From Doctor rw:

'Again I point out, do not confuse climate change with man made pollution as they are not the same thing.'

I don't think anyone is confusing man made pollution with climate change. Except the Doctor.

Man made pollution is causing climate change. Of that, there is no question. Scientists all over the world agree that man produced CO2 is causing rapid climate change. RW is talking about cycles that take centuries to manifest into significant change. The scientists are referring to pollutants, that can be significantly reduced, as the culprits of change. (BTW, even if the scientists are collectively all wrong. Is there anyone who has a problem with living in a cleaner environment)

Thanks for the title and I wish I could bestow the same upon you...even in the most sarcastic way but....
You really don't have a clue what you are talking about, do you.
C02 is naturally occurring on this planet and is the very thing essential to its survival.
I would like you to explain how man made C02, which contributes a mere fraction of the total C02, is changing or can change our climate.
A single volcano in Iceland releases 150,000 to 300,000 tonnes of CO2 per day.

"RW is talking about cycles that take centuries to manifest into significant change."

Yes, yes I am...why... because that is what the history of this planet tells us ya dummy.

I will also ask you to explain why attempts where made to discredit the many scientists that originally started with the IPPC and then left because they publicly stated it was junk science.
While you are at it please explain why the IPPC changed from Man driven to global warming to climate change to climate pause.
It couldn't have anything to do with the numerous fraudulent "science studies" that were exposed could couldn't have anything to do with the fact that this hoax all started in 1990 and it is now 2014 and none of the earlier disaster predictions have unfolded.
(this is where the new term "climate pause" comes in folks)
That's why they are now making new twenty year forecasts...stuff didn't go down so lets just push it into the next twenty years.
Unfortunately for this bunch on the wagon train to nowhere time is one thing this planet has in abundance.

I mean you koolaid drinkers are truly laughable.
The biggest clue that this is all a have not heard a peep from Al Gore, he was smart enough to make his money and run.

Now lets take this statement that you made.

"The scientists are referring to pollutants, that can be significantly reduced, as the culprits of change."

So you are talking about C02, right.
Now tell us that you believe that if we shut down this entire planet...meaning all automobiles, industry, every single thing that is man made and produces C02 that this will stop climate change?
Please tell me that you believe that cause I want to have more fun....

I haven't done too bad this year re: electricity. I have electric heat too but I can turn on each heater individually. Only the two living room heaters are turned on via wall thermostat. Because I have two big windows in the LR, one south facing, the other facing west, it heats my LR comfortably when the sun is shining. I may have to turn on the LR heat a bit in the evening but never for too long. There are benefits to a small home and one of them is it doesn't take much to heat it up. I'm ready to purchase a wood stove now and many just have it installed before next winter. I'll probably have to open windows in the winter with that thing!

So Big Bro....
Al Gores "ice free Arctic" prediction which started in 2007 was falsified by nature itself.
As a matter of fact the ice had expanded by then I said, truth be dammed
He also claimed that the ocean would have risen significantly by now.
(and then he purchased ocean front property with all his hoax money)
His hockey stick graphs were also proven to be out to lunch.

Now here is my question to you...
Where do you place Al Gore now, as an opportunist or just plain wrong?

Ya see rw, I don't profess to know shit from shinola, when it comes to climate change, global warming or CO2 for that matter. But I can read and decipher information. You doctor, on the other hand, like to throw around statistics like you actually understand them. You take references from proven quacks, as your sources and speak in no uncertain terms. It all sounds and appears to be fact based, even intimidating to the naive. Meanwhile, you throw stones at Al Gore, who is possibly just as quacky as you, certainly not moreso though, from the other side of the debate.

There is a difference in our approaches to the issue. I will take the word of the thousands of scientists from all over the world, who so happen to agree with one another, that man produced CO2 is causing climate change, over Joe the Plumber`s opinion. Joe may be correct, but odds are against him all the way.

Global warming became an interest of mine from the time it all started making headlines.
Why, because I have also had an interest in astronomy for over 20 years which led me to an interest in our planet, our solar system, the universe, the sun and to read many books on related topics.
My division on the topic started when it was claimed to be man driven.
I have certainly been accused of being opinionated but I will never apologize for being knowledgeable or a quick study.
I am far from an expert on this but I can assure you I am more than confident to discuss it and debate it with anybody.
I especially love discussing topics like this with folks with far more education on it then I have....that's how you learn.
Just a tip....the person that got me interested in all of it had a PHD from Harvard and now teaches many of these subjects at a Canadian University.
My favorite thing was testing my ability to retain facts with him.

You state that you take the word of thousands of scientist.
Fair enough.
There are also enough scientists on the opposing side armed with enough science, especially the historical science, to convince me.
Just remember the 70's when it was certain that we were heading to a global cooling period.
Thousand of scientist were convinced then also.
Tell me that these thousands of scientist today are not motivated by money.
As one skeptic put it "if you want money to study the habits of squirrels you had better state also how it co-relates to climate change."

Pink Peony,,lol,, I was waiting for you to respond,, I already got an earful from Just Curious ,lol.. You both know it was said in fun, buy hey, one never knows, lol Yes,, get a woodstove!! We have a large living room that gets the sun all day, and i have had to open the doors on more than a few occasions, but it sure is worth it $$ wise. We have electric heat all upstairs and an older gas burner in the basement. Soon as we bought this place we put the woodstove in right away, and have never touched the electric. One other thing we did was to cut an opening high in the livingroom wall, that connects to the bedroom, so as the heat rises it goes into the bedroom,, we trimed the opening and it looks quite nice. Lots of little tricks you can do to improve with the flow of the heat. We got our woodstove at Kents on St. Joe Island,, i suggest you go there, he will fix you up with everything you need. When you get the black pipes that go from the stove to the ceiling, i suggest you get the ones that are double insulated, they cost a wee more but are worth it and i feel much safer with them.... If your home is small, you WILL be having the doors open quite a lot ,lol.. But you can get a smaller stove though to suit your needs. Another thing i love about a woodstove is that in case of a power failure, you can still be warm, make coffee and even cook on the top of them... snug as a bug in a rug ,lol....

Leaving out the argument as to whether global warming is man made or not.....

The IPCC did not bring forward the global warming 'pause' notion, it was a report on CBS that caught on and went viral...

This is the explanation by the IPCC...

"the year 1998 was a record temperature year, due to a strong El Niño. So by making it the first year of an analysis you're stacking the deck. "If you shift just 2 years earlier, so use 1996-2010 instead of 1998-2012, the trend is 0.14 C per decade, so slightly greater than the long-term trend," explains Drew Shindell, a climate scientist at NASA who was heavily involved in producing the IPCC report. This is why climate scientists generally don't seize on 15 year periods and make a big thing about them."

You can take it for what it's worth, but it seems to make sense.
