Random Thoughts on a Cold Winter Day

Saturday, March 01, 2014   by: Mac Headrick

My head is pounding; I’m congested; my chest hurts when I cough. The bottom line my creative abilities are very limited this Saturday. Listed below is a collection of news items and personal thoughts that have been rolling around my brain.

If you wish to complicate and/or frustrate your mind try investigate the subject of global warming. This past Thursday through personal experience I was able to achieve a definitive answer to the question, does global warming exist? The answer is that “global warming” is a mirage. Now how is the above an intelligent analysis? Please allow me the opportunity to explain.

Apparently your position on this subject is often based on personal experience. I am a creature of habit. Specifically when I pick up a prescription at the Group Health Centre I will normally park at Canadian Tire, walk over to the GHC and then return and shop in the Cambrian Mall. In this way I avoid a $2 parking charge for a five minute task and I also get in a little exercise. This past Thursday I experienced something that hasn’t happened to me in 64 years. I was dressed appropriately for the weather (or so I thought). On the way back to my car I found myself in physical distress. My face and the back of my neck began to ache. I do not mind the cold. I suppose walking against the wind was the main contributing factor. My point is where is the global warming? Could it be that it exists except for Northern Ontario. I am tired of this unrelenting cold.

The Manning Centre ( a respected Conservative think tank) released a national survey yesterday that spells bad news for the Conservatives. This survey claims among other things that the Liberals and Conservatives are tied as the political parties best able to deal with the economy. Whether you approve or dislike the Conservative Party handling of the economy there is no doubt as to their direction and plan.

Now the Liberal Party at this time has no plan. This statement is not intended to criticize the Liberal Party. This is actually their official position. The Liberal Party intends to release their economic vision just before the next election. Based on recent political polls this is smart politics. How can your opponents criticize something that doesn’t exist? Now imagine if you are a Conservative politician and your future success depends almost totally on the performance of the economy. This is your strength, remember the famous saying “it is the economy stupid”. Presently the Conservatives are tied with something that doesn’t exist. Remember you heard it here first. The next Liberal election campaign can be summed up as follows. “Canada is great; we feel your pain; a better day is coming tomorrow; group hug”.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of my favourite actors. He died from a drug overdose on February 2/2014. Yesterday a spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner stated the following, “Mr. Hoffman died from a mixture of heroin, cocaine, amphetamines and benzodiazepines.” I personally do not indulge in recreational drugs so my knowledge is very limited. I have to wonder what mental state one has to be in to consume such a wide variety of substances to what… get a thrill, deal with life etc.

I have been thinking about taking up curling. Of course my inspiration comes from the success of the Brad Jacobs rink. I believe I would be a very talented participant based on my personal past history. I have never curled but did play football for many years. Now you may wonder what football has to do with curling? You are about to find out.

Now anyone who plays football and experiences some success must at some point possess some athletic ability. Now I was an offensive lineman. This means I am also intelligent as this position involves a lot of thinking. So far we have athletic ability and intelligence. I was a center for most of my football career. This means that over my lifetime I had over 30 other men’s hands (quarterbacks) on my rear end waiting for me to snap the ball. From this experience you develop sensitivity and have to be secure in who you are as a man. Add it up, athleticism; intelligence; sensitivity and confidence. Being a senior it will probably take me a couple of months before I master the game. Wait a minute I will have to be the skip to avoid the sweeping.

As I see it winter will eventually end. Have a safe warm weekend.

Mac, nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, about what is happening with the popularity and the attention that this cartoon character, justin trudeau, is getting makes any sense, at least to me. He has achieved nothing of substance, he has said nothing of value to Canadians and justin hasn't even promised any thing worthwhile and has shown no credibility as a leader, let alone as a decent high school teacher.
God forbid that justin should actually be voted in as PM of this great country. But, when it comes to the electorate, we should all know; you can always expect the unexpected. Sad but true............

As for curling, what the Brad Jacobs team did in winning the gold medal was not only historic, but an absolutely incredible feat that each and everyone of us in SSM should take great pride and joy in these young men's fantastic accomplishment.
Congratulations guys; each of you made us all proud and for that, we thank you very much. Good luck in the future; you've only just begun and you will, no doubt, accomplish much more before you're done.
Mac, let me know how your training is going; maybe you could soon fill in as the 5th for the Jacobs team.

By the way, is this weather ever going to be warming up ??? Maybe Al Gore or David Suzuki can explain this unusually cold and persistent weather that is never ending...........I'm sure these two very rich dodo birds have an intelligent explanation for what is happening with our climate, you think Mac ???
Talk to you soon.

Mr do you know what kind of teacher Justin was? Did he take a potential job away from your daughter? As a city councillor you should know better than to disparage someone without checking them out first,
fatafr 3/3/2014 9:11:52 PM Report

Javaman, or do you prefer to be called by your real name,James Bond, were you misdiagnosed when you were a child ? Or, perhaps your real name is Elmer Fudd. What the h_ll does my opinion of this loser, justinne trudeau, have to do with what is happening in the teaching profession here in SSM ? Seriously, have you got nothing better to do than to make disparaging remarks, especially when they're way out in left field. I'll stop now; I think I've wasted way too much of your time talking to you.
Again, my main focus here is the so called leader of the federal liberals.
Javaman 3/3/2014 10:07:01 PM Report

YOU made a disparaging remark by your negative comments on Trudeaus teaching. Are you privy to the assessments that may have been done on his teaching? His correct name by the way is JUSTIN.

Mr Fata... You are most certainly entitled to express your opinion, but... When you resort to such a puerile demonstration as changing the gender of his name, you not only lose all credibility, you expose yourself as a sexist. Shame on you.
StrictlyConfidential 3/11/2014 12:49:54 PM Report

I thought I had Liberal thoughts, but when Trudeau said, "The budget will balance itself", I don't know what to think anymore.
StrictlyConfidential 3/11/2014 12:55:58 PM Report

Not to mention the scandal by our representatives, wake up, the rich are getting richer, the middle class is disappearing and the rest of us, for the most part, have nothing to say.
fatafr 3/11/2014 10:54:02 PM Report

Sam C, I do not believe that I am a sexist, though I do have a problem when people are not hired strictly based on merits and quotas are playing an integral roll in the hiring process. As for justin trudeau, I think I've got a very good excuse for my dislike for this former supply teacher; justin is just not qualified and I can not believe Canadians who support him can't see his ineptness and unbelievable arrogance with absolutely no substance or ability. I'm sorry but I will stand by that and will restate my opinion of this buffoon, justin, right through until the day of next federal election.
I will say though, that I do not like Harper either, especially with the way he has been performing lately. The leader that I think has performed with the most intelligence, ability and class is Thomas Mulcair. Of course these are just my personal thoughts on this subject.
soowat 3/12/2014 12:43:29 PM Report

This is an interesting article.

I know that this article has nothing to do with your current column, but as a football fan it is,in my opinion, excellent. Too often fans think of athletes as not being "TOO bright" but this guy has some depth.
RStephens 3/15/2014 12:38:50 PM Report

Your opinions are not opinions, they are just baseless comments.

You offer zero reasons as to why you don't like the politicians you mention.

Justin isn't qualified to teach or to hold political office, according to you - what makes you qualified to hold political office or to make comments like that?
Javaman 3/15/2014 3:01:13 PM Report

I think Justin would make a great teacher. Someone in authority agrees with me as he got hired and was never fired. Comments like Mr. Fata's are baseless and an example of why we need changes at city hall come the next election. Being tolerant of others has to be a requirement of the job.
fatafr 3/15/2014 3:06:33 PM Report

RStephans; if we use your logic on this matter, what makes you qualified to decide that my opinions are somewhere out in left field. My point; that's what is great about living in a democratic country; we're all entitled to an opinion and to be able to express ourselves openly without fear of trepidation.
I'm not here to defend my opinions; I'm simply on this site, like everyone else, to state my thoughts on the topic at hand. If what I believe bothers you; so be it. If I should write something that someone indicates to me was wrong or crossing the line; I would be the first to apologize. In the case of my opinions on this liberal leader, I most definitely have nothing to apologize for.
Certainly feel free to comment on my opinions anytime you wish. After all, that's what these sights are for.
Have a nice day.
