Good article, Spelly. While I agree the USA is in decline I doubt it has much to do with Obama. It has more to do with entities outside of the government having control.

The POTUS is becoming more and more like a figurehead, just along for the ride.

Snobank 2/22/2014 7:33:57 AM Report

Yesterday when I woke up I found the ice chipper had gone down my street and in the process had filled the end of my driveway with ice chunks far too heavy for me to remove. I phoned Public Works and explained I was a senior who could not shovel that stuff. The person I spoke to politely said she would put in a work order. A couple of hours later a back hoe showed up and cleaned out the end of my driveway. He also did the neighbors on each side of me for good measure.

It's been a heavy winter for the city snow removal services. Under these conditions I think they have done a remarkable job. It's easy to complain about less than perfection but in this case I want to commend Public Works for a job well done.
Jimssm 2/22/2014 7:40:34 AM Report

I agree. The two times a grader went down my street this winter a backhoe was following along to clean out the driveways.

Board of Works has been doing a splendid job this winter.
Bobby Nerves 2/22/2014 7:57:00 AM Report

Snobank, thank you for bringing it to our attention.

It is of good citizen to appreciate the job done for the public workers.

We all should concentrate in positive news and let other mean spirited drunkards insist with trivialities and laugh about our neighbors bad luck.

Time to say thank you to all those serving the community in one way or another.

Thank you; to all those serving the community in one way or another; for a great service and a job well done.

Can the black teenager who faces a staggering unemployment rate feel that government policies are a success?

When you put a big tax on something, the people will produce less of it.

Welfare's purpose should be to eliminate, as much as possible, the need for its own existence.

It's definitely a toss-up. Reagan never came up with one wise statement, in his tenure, on his own. As an actor, he learned to memorize lines and deliver them on cue. Dubya couldn't remember the lines and would proceed to screw them up.

Remember the quote...'fool me, ah, twice, ah shame on you...ah, fool me once...'

Man, he screwed that one up completely and he couldn't have chosen a more appropriate one to screw up. Very fitting.

Big Bad Bob 2/22/2014 11:01:14 AM Report

Although Ronald Reagan never impressed me as someone who should have won either the Academy Award, the Pulitzer Prize or a Rhodes Scholarship, I do seem to recall reading a review of selections from somebody’s (Brian Mulroney’s?) memoirs , mentioning the fact that, although The Iron Lady took Reagan for a simpleton at first, she gradually came to consider that he wasn’t quite as dumb as he looked. As for leaders surrounding themselves by competent advisers, I frequently had the impression that our late Wunderkind, PET , was quite adept at ridding himself of certain bright Ministers and replacing them by dumb clucks to make himself look good. It reminded me of the story about the court of Charles Quint, who ruled Spain from 1519 to 1556, where ladies were accustomed to be accompanied by a pet chimpanzee in the hope that the ape’s ugliness would make them look more beautiful.
mallet 2/22/2014 11:19:21 AM Report

Spellchecker..

Your 7.58am post, regarding what Reagan was supposed to have said, is very true, however as with all government departments, to get to the top of the heap, one has to have the required amount below you. You, therefor have to ask yourself, why would I want to put myself and colleagues out of work, by being efficient and making sure people got off welfare or any other social dependent system. I know I am going to be shot at for this statement, but I look at welfare and long term unemployment as a form of addiction, to get away from it you have to want to. No amount of help will solve the problem if there is no desire to remove yourself from that situation. Now there are circumstances like down turns and being laid off subject to recall, however if this happens on a very regular pattern, one would have to look long term if the situation is going to get better, or perhaps look at another career option. Once upon a time a job was yours for life, this has now passed and one must look perhaps at changing occupations, once or twice during a working life...

Did anyone listen to CBC "The House" this morning? Justin Trudeau was being interviewed, and just like most politicians, he did not answer the question asked. The interviewer did not question him on his circling the questions. I am not a Conservative, but I can see that Mr. Solomon would not have let that go if it if it had been Conservative MP. Mr. Trudeau sounded so much like his father. Justin does not know what it is to be a poor or a middle income person. After the interview, more journalists had a sort of round table talk, and it was brought up about Justin not answering the questions. Interesting to say the least. And then last night while watching the news, the retired General Leslie was being questioned by the media, and he said he had been approached by other parties. The Conservatives say they haven't, and the same by the NDP. Mr. Trudeau had to step in and save Mr. Leslie from making a fool of himself. He is not prepared for the political scrum.

Hey Big Brother, no, Harper doesn't give interviews because for so many years, the media kept saying he had "A hidden agenda". For years that's all you heard, and so he decided that he would not give interviews. Oh, yes, he did. If you watched CBC, you would have seen him give a One on One with Peter Mansbridge. As for the Trudeau I just read "The National News" here on Soo Today, and all he basically talks about is the Senate. So what if he kicked them out of the Cabinet. He only did that because most every one knows is that the Liberal Senators were also at the trough, the same as the Conservatives. The only ones that did not, were the NDP, and that's because they don't have any Senators in the Red Chamber.

I am waiting for Justine Trudeau to tell us where he is going. Not about "pot", but the economy. What he's going to do about it, and HOW.

I am not biased. I just state it as I see it. I don't even know who I will vote for in 2015. At this rate, nobody interests me, and that's scary because we, the older people are the ones that do vote.

Wisen the other thing my little bon bon is if someone is willing to spend 10 million dollars on attack adds you could make just about anyone look a bit bad. Too bad for Harper it isn't going to work on J. Trudeau

Wisenheimer, I understand you are a very smart person with contacts in the market and all those things of the wise men, but let me suggest you an investment that could put your name on the Forbes List of most powerful people on earth.

Start buying cons... whenever you see a conservative, you buy it and hold to it, because in one year they will be very hard to find. And you know that rule of the market, eh? offer... demand... and all that.

Here you have a Walmart voucher, buy a BBQ chicken for $ 3.00 and get two for free.

Trudeau's an empty suit; and an empty head.

No wonder the lefties pronate in adulation.

Seriously, would anybody let that goof anywhere near the most important job in the nation? Seriously.

All this guy's got, even with his "advisers", are platitudes. That's it.
Even at a bloody policy convention - it's all platitudes. That's it.

Seriously, even if you have an irrational "hate" for Harper, do you hate your own country bad enough to let this Platitudes R US goof anywhere near the reins of power?

I would more than likely never vote Liberal but if I was prone to vote Liberal, Trudeau would do an excellent job of diminishing the chances of them getting my vote.

Yawn and a bigger boring yawn.. Yeah Harper will get elected hahahaha NO look who he has pissed off.
Bye Steven nice knowing you and here is the boot.

8 years is enough 8 years of nothing is nothing and NO ONE can tell me he had done anything for anyone

Zilch zero but rack up a debt and deficit when we had zero deficit. Could you imagine the economy if we each had some tax money returned to us?

We would be the envy of democracy instead we have a government that wasted money on advertisement with a dead website.

Learning it is your opinion but I won't vote for Muclairfor Trudeau either. ntil we see real leadership and not just for the west I won't vote for a government that favours one province over another.

Good luck.

You're going to need it, especially with Trudeau.
