David Poluck 2/20/2014 6:33:57 AM Report

Good Thursday morning!
I was informed yesterday and sad to learn of the passing of another long time retail store.
Peoples in the Cambrian is closing. Add five more job losses.
Is this yet another sign of our shrinking economy?
Where is the government intervention to save those jobs?

Protector... we were discussing the other day issues of the economy and employment. Care to weigh in?

Javaman 2/20/2014 6:42:36 AM Report

An aging population that does not need jewellery...sign of he times. How many jewellery stores are there in Elliot Lake ??
Grump 2/20/2014 7:00:55 AM Report

Good morning everyone, it would be nice to see a few more nice Spring days like yesterday. Hunter 101 I had to agree with your last post yesterday. I thought to myself this just can't be. Then I got to your last paragraph and though no, I'm OK because it was the same old ,same old. LMAO. Have a great day all.
David Poluck 2/20/2014 7:08:46 AM Report

J, but most of us do not ride the train to Hurst yet a $50,000.00 study was launched to keep the train running..Norgoma was back to the budget...EDC works to save OLG...Why the double standard?

Aren't jobs ,,,jobs?
David Poluck 2/20/2014 7:11:47 AM Report

Good morning Grump..let us keep forecast is unfortunately not on our side for the weekend.
But that too shall pass!
dust2 2/20/2014 7:34:17 AM Report

Why should government intervene to save jobs? a business is there to make money, if the store here closed down it's because it's not making money.

I don't understand why everyone is so surprised by that. This town is a steel town that's slowly dying. Seriously, you'd be insane to open a business here. Tons of seniors, tons of welfare recipients, this town is a soon-to-be detroit if new industries don't come to town. What happens when the steel plant gets shut down? Most students leave and never come back anyways, the ones that do end up working retail or some other low paying job because that's all they can find here. Sudbury is a mere three hour drive, and offers ten times the job opportunity compared to this city.

Businesses need MONEY. There isn't a lot of money in this town, which is why you see stores like Peoples closing but not dollar stores. Dollars stores do very well here. There's a reason for that.
highway1 2/20/2014 7:38:49 AM Report

Have you been there lately?
Gurpy 2/20/2014 7:48:33 AM Report

I`m part of the aging population. Need jewels no. Want jewels? OKAY!! Lol
David Poluck 2/20/2014 7:50:26 AM Report

"Why should government intervene to save jobs? a business is there to make money, if the store here closed down it's because it's not making money."

dust..Exactly. That is the way of business. A reality.
But why then is a "store" treated different than "public sector employment"

dust2 2/20/2014 7:54:25 AM Report

because one is profit driven and one isn't

Well don't know much about curling but I'm cheering for Jenny Poo this morning and for the Sault boys to bring home the gold!
I think that was neat of the Essar brass to open up the building so everyone can see and cheer on the Jacobs Rink. ....GOOD LUCK!
dust2 2/20/2014 8:12:19 AM Report

what on earth are you talking about
Wild Turkey 2/20/2014 8:40:06 AM Report

Store closures--part of the natural business cycle.Look at all the fine family stores downtown---gone because no-one wanted to carry on.
Mall stores closing--reasons--
Rent too high
High G.S.T. (business sales tax)
Wages too high
Products not in high demand(think video rentals for one)
Prices not competitive
Lower loonie-cost of goods higher(if imported)
Store specific causes
Poor customer service
Lack of staff
Outdated,unwanted product selection
Store hours
And likely some stuff I've overlooked
It's just part of the natural business cycle
theprotector 2/20/2014 8:51:48 AM Report

why dp as you stated to me its not that big of deal, just move on to something else. I fail to see why you seemed so concerned over a few min. wage jobs and not other jobs that are supporting taxes, familys, school and SUPRISE local businesses. But as you said we have enough governement jobs here, more than our fair share! Live it up DP there are more have nots which will help you as you look down on them as their masses grow - hey maybe just maybe you can get them to shine your shoes or squeggy your windshield as you spit on them and tell them to get a job!!
right wing 2/20/2014 8:58:25 AM Report

You are so far off of your "business" analogy of the Sault.
About the only part you got correct was that a business must make a profit or it will close down.
I've been hearing for decades that the steel plant is going to close.
Insane to open a business here...I guess you know more than all the new businesses that have opened in this town over the past ten years and survived successfully.
No money here...?????
Now that is laughable.
The Sault has been expanding with new development at about the rate one would expect.
Could we use new industry of any kind, of course what city does not welcome new industry.
Dollar stores have closed in this town.
...and your use of the words "tons" is just so...shall we say ridiculous.
Wicket 2/20/2014 9:14:23 AM Report

Wild Turkey - the biggie that you missed is that people order on-line, by-pass the middle man on goods, get free delivery to Soo, Mi and a cheaper price to boot.
Wicket 2/20/2014 9:15:25 AM Report

I posted this in the social (red) room and thought I would share it in here:

Gurpy, Irishfey, the blue room as it is called is a NEWS response room not a religious chic-chat room. As for this room, it is a social room open to social conversation and from the start, politics and religion have not been a part of it by agreement with the posters. Perhaps you two could exchange e-mail addresses and share your info that way, as the majority both here and in the other room will only express interest in the subject once and then not again.
Javaman 2/20/2014 9:19:51 AM Report

Perhaps the site owners should be calling the shots, wicket.
David Poluck 2/20/2014 9:19:54 AM Report

Pro I asked for your opinion and you retort with a arse response.
Here i thought you had something to add.
My mistake.
theprotector 2/20/2014 9:29:28 AM Report

hahaha DP, you clearly stated this area has enough and more than its share of gov jobs so why would a few unskilled min wage people losing their job make any difference to someone with your limited mind set?
Your opinion on many of these issues is about as relevant as the garbage you try and write on your so call column. Serious? Get a life
Bobby Nerves 2/20/2014 9:36:15 AM Report

We have to install a device that contracted out will be $ 550 because have to meet standards set by a couple Ontario Codes.

The Codes set the standards but do not require a license for the installation, and it consist of attaching the device to a secure and conspicuous place with four bolts.

I went to one local store for the specialty and I was asked $ 175 for the device alone, not even the bolts.

Went online as the device is "built" in Quebec... but it has a detachable stamp identifying it, then I realized it is only built in two places in USA, Columbus, OH and LA, CA. Contacted the company and they sale it online $ 35.00 plus $ 12.50 three days delivery.

I choose the latest.

The factory sales the product with two prices, one is public, the one I paid and bulk, the price the local store paid, but fortunately I can't express myself very well in English and that's of help.

I'll keep to 100 dollars in the account for vacation time. And the 500 overall also.

This is one of the advantages and disadvantages of a border town and is not a characteristic of the Soo, as it happens all over the world.
irishfey 2/20/2014 9:36:41 AM Report

Wicket... I already gave you my answer in the other room.. Why post it again??? Gurpy on the other hand might not agree. Her choice, and not of anyone elses. Not all that is on here is news,, lots of insults etc..... Have agood day all....

Bobby Nerves 2/20/2014 9:49:13 AM Report

By the same token of buying on line, I've track a couple stores selling on line in the USA and they are here in the Soo... one of them was located near down town and 3 or 4 months ago closed it's doors and few days ago I was told they are "operating from home now".

The Liberals are more radical about monetary policy, I believe but I could be corrected, and as soon as Justin takes over, the dollar should go down as it will help with our exports. Another project to work with would be to clean the Revenue Act.

Wild Turkey 2/20/2014 9:56:54 AM Report

Wicket--double amen to that.(Room jumpers)
As for online shopping--I look upon it as the elephant in the room--a relatively new phenomenon.
As time goes by our local businesses will learn to adapt.
The old Simpson -Sears catalogue, and Eatons did a pretty good business because they carried stuff you couldn't find locally. The strong locals survived because they learned how to compete-(good customer service, better selection, fair prices,no hastle returns)
Local shopping will only get better as time goes by.
irishfey 2/20/2014 9:59:27 AM Report

Wicket... was just wondering why you singled out Gurpy and meself with your post and why not the others that had Religious views. You yourself were on here asking a Religious question were you not?... just saying... no sarcasm intended...

Wild Turkey.. Lots on here are room jumpers, or can you not read??? Both are public sites for all!
Wicket 2/20/2014 10:12:38 AM Report

The owners of this site created the two separate rooms because of the conversations that a group of us were having that had nothing to do with the news.
I made the comments to Gurpy and Irishfey because they are having continuous dialog between themselves that most others are not interested in. Spellchecker was picked on, ridiculed, and other nasties because of always quoting the bible or putting passages on here. He has chosen to not post much any more.
I don't know why none of the originals post any more, I know they lurk, I also know some just don't like the trolls, bullying, nasty comments and the name calling.
right wing - if only you knew me, I am the last person you would pick on (kick someone out of my sandbox, really, there was never any room for me in it because I always invited more than there was room for).

Bobby Nerves 2/20/2014 10:15:12 AM Report

Oakville is the first town in Ontario to go all steam ahead with community boxes.

That's a relatively new community with a lot of IT professionals and high crop middle class there.

Well, there is a business opportunity there.

Your opportunity is born in the same ground where others failure is laying.

Think of Weir across the pound, modify it, lay back a bit, add some fresh paint, shiny colors and you may have a new distribution center, safe, secure, reliable, handy and yaddah yaddah yaddah.
Gurpy 2/20/2014 10:19:34 AM Report

Gurpy - my original post was in the Red Room, which I stated, where there is no politics or religion discussed in order to keep it a social room without confrontation about touchy subjects.
News, money, investments, politics and religion involving different countries has always been a part of this room.

Do not perceive my comments as negative or picking on anyone as that is not my intent, having been on here from the beginning, I just know what drives people away and personal religious beliefs is one of them.
Wicket 2/20/2014 10:26:52 AM Report

Wicket dear.. You still didn"t answer my question of why you jumped on the bandwagon the other day and asked a Religious question... As for folks being picked on, ridiculed etc. it happens every day when they talk Politics. And WHY did you not leave your first comment in the Red Room, if not to have others join in your little rant and support you..... Gurpy,, you are so right!!! But alas, i have things to do today,lol... and Gurpy.. remember that saying about "never kicking a dead horse"? ,lol.. You go Girl ,lol

When I hear some people talking about money I think what soccer players are paid today. Manchester United is now offering one of its players 300,000 pounds a week. When I left England a reasonable weekly wage was around 20 pounds, I am not jealous, for I do not have those skills, however I do have to ask, does it seem reasonable for a person who kicks a ball for a living to make more in one week than a doctor who may save your life makes in a year?? Oh by the way at the present rate of exchange 300thousand pounds works out at 552thousand dollars Canadian...
Spellchecker 2/20/2014 12:53:16 PM Report

Mallet, it's a matter of priorities. In today's world sports trumps everything else. If people will pay exorbitant amounts to attend sporting events, that's where the high salaries will be. Professional sports is big business. If they depended on people like me they would be on the street with tin cups.

Tandori Gardens - think is the old Mary's Cupboard, just before Pita Pit/ Duke of Windsor

I went into the archives & read your post from Jan. 17, 2014@ 11:33;47am. Did you really mean what you said??

Wicket- I read your post from the same day at 11:52;41am. "I have never posted anything negative about any religious group nor do I attack anyone`s personal beliefs".
