Good job!

Regarding the NORGOMA:
This city council lacks backbone. They cannot bring themselves to make tough decisions. They are best at sending tough decisions to a committee to look at. It is time to replace the whole bunch...AND...we only need one councillor per ward.
David Poluck 2/19/2014 7:54:10 AM Report

Java, I just fail to see what all the rush to do something is about.
Where does the thinking of no funding automatically turns the ship into scrap?
What's the rush?
Why is this the only alternative?
Wild Turkey 2/19/2014 7:56:31 AM Report

We already lost the lock tour boat, and are in danger of losing the canyon tour train. At the moment, the Norgoma is serving the purpose of an inexpensive waterfront attraction. Now is not the time to dump it .When all the new attractions are in place, then maybe there will be no need for a marine presence on our waterfront. It hurts, but right now it is necessary to keep Her going.
statusquo 2/19/2014 8:06:18 AM Report

"the Norgoma is serving the purpose of an inexpensive waterfront attraction"

Could you define "attraction" to me ?

Who would the "Norgoma" attract?
Scrap Iron brokers?
Javaman 2/19/2014 8:10:07 AM Report

Since the Norgoma was placed in its location, water levels have really dropped. How would they ever float it out of there? Is taking it apart piece by piece the only way to eliminate it ?
Spellchecker 2/19/2014 8:14:15 AM Report

Ever hear of the turkey trail? It was a big part of the history of this area.
flyhawk25 2/19/2014 8:17:21 AM Report

The lock tour floated and ran.
The tour train ran and served a purpose.
The Norgoma sits and rusts.
ROLAND_ROLLY 2/19/2014 8:33:32 AM Report

Sad to hear that the Norgoma has a reprieve. What a pile of scrap, it is an eyesore on the waterfront. Take the hit now and get rid of it.

This is going to be an never ending story until someone has the nuts to put an end to it. Again, wasting their time on small issues instead of looking at the MAJOR problems we have and will have in this city
Just Curious 2/19/2014 8:47:00 AM Report

Just strikes me that unless they can get someone to take it out for no charge then at the moment it's cheaper to keep it going..People would squeal like the dickens if we have to pay maybe 300,000 to take it out just to give it away..Give it to Purvis and let him figure it out...:)

@Stats--Some marine enthusiasts pay big bucks to visit The Titanic. They are drawn by a sense of History, or something macabre. They are attracted to it.
Other folks are attracted to blow up dolls , or road kill.
I guess an attraction could be defined as whatever turns your crank.

An insightful (IMHO) piece in yesterday's Tampa Bay Times titled "The Hollow Political Man". The "man" referred to is Michael Ignatieff, the former leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. i.e. "Ignatieff failed at politics, but through the refiner's fire of the political climb, he realized what a tainted but worthwhile calling it can be".

Mr. Ignatieff, an academic after all, whether you'd like it or not, was to the Liberals in Canada the same than Romney to the Republicans in USA.

With few million dollars of difference and Mitt Romney most uproarious impact at the end of his fall, more or less they were the same.

Then, there you go, tit for tat.

Javaman 2/19/2014 10:08:53 AM Report

We have a gorgeous waterfront POTENTIAL.I say potential because we have never taken advantage of such a wonderful natural environment. We should have docking facilities second to none. Facilities that would make tourists want to visit us. The docking at the foot of Pine Street is great but how about some docking in the downtown area? How about a park for those with motor homes and other travelling apparatus? How about little shops and cafes along the boardwalk? How about public washrooms for those not knowing they can use the library washrooms? Instead we have a council that spends time on deciding what to do with a rusting hulk sitting on the waterfront.

Javaman, right on, my husband and I were able to obtain documentation (plans, drawings, etc.) from the CEO/president and owner of a development in lower Michigan on Lake Michigan and a river. He met with us for two hours (we just walked in off the street on a very rainy day) and he gave us what he had paid thousands of dollars to obtain. We presented it to council and the city when Fratesi was mayor, (so this goes back away) with a proposal to incorporate the then existing Chrome Plant and Trader's Metal property for restaurant/coffee shop/ and boutique shopping. Our plans included a short stay only campground and park. They thought we were crazy. We had even gone to the trouble of involving the ASC lawyer and getting a price on the property owned by ASC and they were practically giving it to us. We also tried for government funding/subsidies/entrepreneur funds, etc. (including selling our house to put our money into it). With no support from the city or council, we, sadly, let it go.... and still nothing has been done except to build a casino tent and parking lot on the property (which only takes people's money).

Wild Turkey..

You know all these "attractions" have to be financially viable, otherwise they become either eyesores or a burden on the taxpayer. How many "tourist attractions" are you prepared to support with your tax dollar, and at the risk of sounding mercenery that is all it comes down to in the end. There were ideas to put a restaurant on the Norgoma, did not come to fruition, why? There was an idea for the old traders metal site, why did that not come to something? I would suspect the busines plans did not warrant the expenditure and thus funding was not forthcoming. That is the way of life today, if it is not a money maker then it just withers away...

Just Curious 2/19/2014 11:46:56 AM Report

Been in the Sault pretty much 35 years and have watched a lot of things and Ideas come and go. Love the place and never plan on leaving except as dust. I do have to say, however, the politics of this town sucks.. Everything is done reactively, not proactively. Every one on council never want to take a chance unless it's been studied to death or been done somewhere else. There is absolutely no willingness to take a risk and shoot for the moon and try something totally different. This shows up in so many ways. The Gore street sub Police station is a prime example. It is only going to be staffed during the day and probably no foot patrols.. People, nothing happens down here in the daytime, other than the hookers. The shit goes on at night !!!! 7 at night to 7 in the morning and it might pay off. You want to revitalise Gore st, grab the bull by the balls and put it back to 2 way. Right now it's just an escape route. Allow shops and stalls all along the boardwalk in the summertime, put in some washrooms, make the place really people friendly, not business friendly as it is now. Let Station mall look after itself.. The snow dump on Railroad is another example of poor planning. When I questioned it and the flooding that could happen in the Spring, the answer was we'll worry about that if it does.. When the water is up to someone's butt in his basement ain't the time to start worrying about it.. Reactive, not proactive.. Afraid to take a chance unless someone else is paying for it..OK, End of Rant...LOL
Wild Turkey 2/19/2014 12:00:21 PM Report

@Mallet---I totally agree with you-----But the point I was trying to make was-subsidize the thing at$15,000. rather than spend $300,000 to get rid of it right now.

I agree consultants are like lawyers, as long as they are using someone elses money they flock like seagulls round a landfill.
Why the council cannot use their own in house "experts" I do not know, is there not an engineering dept? or if there is why are they not taking an interest in any proposals, and not giving an un-biased report.. There are many things that could be done, but there is either no will or there are too many roadblocks put in the way.. The old traders metal yard is contaminated, so much so that grass weeds and trees grow there, however no one wants to pay for the clean up, who wants to buy it if the end cost is in the millions. So what would it cost to put a layer of sand, then top soil and sod and make it a park, and then in maybe a hundred years or so, it will be fit to build on, or maybe a overnite trailer park, right down town near the casino, but no the council and its managers have their thumbs in a certain orifice. There are many things the city could do if there was a will to do them, but they will study them to death...

Surely you are kidding right? Have you not seen some of the local projects our in-house "experts" have untaken? The "new" Trunk Rd/Southmarket St. extension is nothing but a joke and glorified speedway...people jockeying and racing for position at the lights going like a bat outta hell...and don't get me started on the whiz kids in our snow removal unit...most roads in town are down to an ox cart path where if you have pedestrians walking you can hardly avoid running them down because you have no room to manoeuvre around them...yet we get yahoo's on here sing their praise...these brainiacs decided to wait until after the weather turned colder last week to scrape the roads resulting in large ice chunks in everyone's driveway.

Oh while I'm ranting, give me a break already and get rid of the dead wood at city hall starting with Teflon Joe (bunch of NIMBY's). We need to start with a clean slate of young people who have the balls to think outside of SSMarie.

mallet 2/19/2014 4:51:30 PM Report

Left Winger...

People rat racing down streets in not the fault of the engineering staff, that happens in every town/city in the world, but I am not familiar with the area. As for the snow clearing, that comes under the board of works people, and in their defence, I think we can blame the weather a little bit in that regard, if you have a driveway you know how much you have shovelled/blown/plowed yourself. Also if people do not complain it is hard to get work done, like clearing when others are shouting for theirs to be done, squeaky wheel syndrome!! Also you have to think of the city budget, how much are you prepared to pay extra to have your street cleared of every snowflake, I am pretty sure everybody is over budget with snow clearance this winter... and it hasn't finished yet!!!
lookaround 2/19/2014 4:56:42 PM Report

Wild Turkey:
The group seeking funding is made up of volunteers who have worked long and hard on the Norgoma. They haven't given up hope and they should have our support. I agree with you that it is cheaper to fund it piecemeal, with the possibility that it could someday be self-supporting, than get rid of it.
Just Curious 2/19/2014 5:17:32 PM Report

Mallet, it's not so much the speed as the way the road was built.. You don't need to be an engineer to know you don't slope a curve down to the outside. Every darn curve on the new road does that. Whoever designed it should know you have to bank a curve. You can slide off that damn road at the speed limit on a dry day. It's terrible engineering at it's best.. I have driven all over this great country and would be hard pressed to find a piece of road like it.. The top of St Georges is another prime example, it's flat as a pancake around that corner.. I have no problem with how they handle the snow, it has been a rough winter, altho when I first moved up here this would have been a normal winter...:)
Bobby Nerves 2/19/2014 6:04:11 PM Report

Okay I can agree with that, but I would want to see the plans and drawings before I made a decision on their professional credits. I know from experience if you are not with the crew doing the work strange things can happen, plus the MTO which does the work out here has some complex laws/rules about banking corners (cannot be greater than 2 1/2 degrees) something about people would speed round the corners, as if that would happen!! also if there are roads coming in at that point having a "ridge" could be a problem with some low slung cars.. Not trying to excuse but one has to look at all the area, but to slope away from a corner does seem rather silly..

Hunter101 2/19/2014 10:53:32 PM Report

Left winger, blaming bad driving on anything but the drivers is just dumb. People need to learn how to drive and not think of only themselves. That is never the fault of engineers. The trunk road and south market intersection is one of the few properly designed intersections in our city. If you think it's poorly designed, maybe you should check to see if you're driving on the correct side of the road.

As for snow removal, go look at the job that other cities do. I guarantee you won't find better roads given the circumstances. These services are not at your beckoning call. The less busy streets get less attention and to tell you the truth, if you don't like it then you can use your words in a constructive manner instead of just whining about it, as stated above.

If not then no one cares. The other side to my posts on here is I am proactive with my ideas and political standpoints. Hopefully you are too, or your posts are a waste and nothing more.
dust2 2/20/2014 12:43:31 AM Report

this city is prime example of how great it will be when cars drive themselves. I see so many aggressive drivers, no turn signals, arrogant driving behavior, cutting off pedestrians, the list goes on. even slow drivers are a problem, people going obnoxiously slow just create a higher risk of accidents. I wish there was a way to so a minor "report" on drivers, so their bad habits can be monitored and hopefully improved on.

the lack of turn signals here is pretty brutal though. honestly it's the easiest thing to do, people should legitimately not be able drive if they don't use them.
