Grump 2/11/2014 5:54:16 AM Report

Good morning everyone, another fine example of the Harper gov't not only cutting off mail delivery but halting a four year study on postal banking and burying it. This is a huge revenue stream for other postal services but Harper obviously has another agenda and to hell with facts. Now in spite of Dust's assertion that we are in modern times I have always believed that if a business is run properly it will stay in the black and continue to service their clients. I hope that more than I will be scorching Hayes' butt over this. Add this to Sun Media's assessment of this governments handling of the economy in last night's Star and we can't get rid of this fellow quick enough. Strong hand on the economy my a**. When a Tory paper start complaining it's only the swamp apparently that still supports this man. Have a great day all.
David Poluck 2/11/2014 6:23:58 AM Report

Grump, I would say it is time for a forensic audit of Canada Post Corp.

Something stinks. The truth is in the paper trail.

Question do we press for such an audit? Letters to MP"s?
Letters to the Auditor General?
Or will Canadians just roll over and comply?
What do you think?

Grump, would you have a link to that article. I believe it was written, I would just like to read it myself.

The swampers are cheering for Harper on everything, even when the National Harper Apologists are questioning him.

Same thing with Trudeau's Senate play. Preston and Co. were complimenting Trudeau for the move, even if it is 'smoke and mirrors'. It is still more than Harper has accomplished in 10 years.
flyhawk25 2/11/2014 7:40:51 AM Report

I have been thinking for a while now that we will never know the depth and width of Harper's mess until long after we fumigate parliament.
It will likely be the CBC or CTV - two media sources the PMO loves to hate.
But it may just be someone on social media by then.
Like every other rigid doctrinaire leader in history - fill in your favorite despot's name - we will see a tale of iconoclast empire building that will leave future generations wondering how we could be so blind.
Just as my generation did with the Third Reich and so many other movements.

Federal budget to include promise to take on Canada-U.S. price gaps: official

OTTAWA - The governing Conservatives will use Tuesday's federal budget to unveil a crackdown on multinational companies that charge Canadian customers more than Americans on everything from books to clothing and appliances.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's budget will include a promise of legislation to stop "country pricing" — when multinational brands set different prices in Canada and the United States, a government official told The Canadian Pres;_ylt=AwrBTzHBHvpSxS0AHVDrFAx.;_ylu=X3oDMTBybnV2cXQwBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMgRjb2xvA2JmMQR2dGlkAw--

David, any budgetary plans will be subject to a falling loonie and the US repatriating industries.

Read about Chrysler demands, and Chrysler is a private corporation looking for the welfare of taxpayers, all in the name of 2600 jobs. Let them go! The world is plenty of industries willing to build cars in Canada.

If the US would like to break the rules in order to repatriate jobs, then, let's kick it to the curb, like the move with the pipe line.

Having written that,I agree with you that the facts need to come out regarding the post office

Flyhawk and JC, we are all fried. Even if we get a wife we have to have children in the household to split income.

It makes Canada a more inequal Country in order to benefit few spreading the cost among many (85%).

flyhawk25 2/11/2014 10:35:51 AM Report

Let me straighten you out on Vietnam and the draft.
First of all it was an ugly and immoral fight in which the US government tried to fight a limited land war in Asia.
They sent conscripted kids - mainly minorities - into fights that they were ill-equipped and trained for.The rich and connected - read GWB and others - managed to avoid going. As did many of my friends who knew somebody who was 'connected'.
As they came back home and told the naked facts America turned against it.Eventually Nixon canned the draft, the US lost the war and life moved on.
The MSM sent images into living rooms each night and helped to get the truth to the masses.
I had a draft card -#332 - and 330 of the guys were black and many uneducated.
I was living here and became a citizen to vote and get a break on college tuition.
I got lucky. Many of my friends did not.
I hope that educates you and I can just leave that mess in the past.
learningaswego 2/11/2014 10:36:24 AM Report

Canada Post (Royal Mail) used to have an entity called the Post Office Savings Bank until 1968. A copy of the Post Office Savings Bank Regulations can be found at this site - .

The Pierre Trudeau Liberal government, through Postmaster General Eric Kierans from Quebec, announced the phase out of the post bank on August 28, 1968. See the news article at

"Reality Check---Where did you get the idea that Canada Post was pulling back on their plans for Community Boxes ?"

The post referred to the U.S., not Canada. I was answering flyhawk, who had said the U.S. had finally cancelled Saturday delivery. My info was that it had backed off on this and was still providing the service.
flyhawk didn't respond as to where he got his information.
I posted this last night but it was so late I didn't think you would see it.

Hunter101 2/11/2014 10:55:37 AM Report

Still morning and all of the Harper haters are conjuring up conspiracy theories on how he swept a Canada Post study under the table. And we're paranoid?

You know how often I send a parcel via post?

Probably once or twice a month. I have all paperless billing and do most of my account management online. If you truly believe that we still need door to door mail service then you are living in the stone age.

David Poluck - good! It's a step in the right direction. If Harper wants to keep people spending their money here he will make the prices equal. I remember my brother went to PayLess Shoes to buy a pair of boots advertised on the website (American) for $30. When we went to the one on top of the hill....$60!

How is crossing the border an excuse for doubling the price? I can see a small increase but that's ridiculous.

Needless to say one of the employees who worked there blurted out when we pointed out the difference "Oh, well we have free healthcare here."

The left wing mind will make up any excuse.
realitycheck 2/11/2014 11:01:31 AM Report

"Wow Fly .. you got rid of the Third Reich!"

Where did you get that from what flyhawk said? Push his buttons all you want but I think you should do it based on some understanding of what he actually said.

I'm with Snobank in thinking flyhawk was a bit out in blaming his generation for what happened in the Third Reich. It was probably two generations before his that turned the blind eye to what Hitler was doing -- Churchill and Roosevelt being exceptions -- and the generation before his that cleaned up the problem.

Sorry but she is not correct.
I had a draft card just like every other American kid.
There was no 'lottery' then. They just started at #1 and went from there. If you were deemed a candidate - a detail which would take too long to explain - you got a letter and had to report.
If you passed the tests you were in the army.If you pre-empted that you could enlist in the other services. If they'd take you.
Most of my group ended up in a rice paddy eventually because they were part of the 'bodies' McNamara and friends needed.
By then I was enrolled in school here and never did live in the states after age four. That did not matter - a citizen is a citizen and if you weren't connected you went.
And I hope that can be the final word on a sad part of many lives.

In Canada bounder is quite free to set up his own website page and say whatever he feels like. Of course others are free to sue him for libel as free speech does mean you are accountable for what you say.

If someone else makes a libelous statement on bounder's website bounder could also be found responsible unless he can demonstrate he took reasonable steps to edit or remove that statement.

In other words, if you own or are responsible for a website you have every right to remove any thing you don't like no matter how much it infuriates someone. After all, you own it.

If you want free uncensored postings start your own website but be prepared to be personally accountable for what you say. It's the Canadian way.

That comparison, if you truly believe it and were not just making a dramatic statement, showed you did not understand the rights, and yes, the responsibilities that go with free speech.

As a way of illustrating, suppose you converted the side of your house to a giant bulletin board and invited the public to make comments on it for others to see. Lots of people did. Eventually someone wrote on it a insulting lie about your neighbour. You failed to erase it. You, as well as the person who wrote it, could end up in court. Even if you are found innocent it's still likely to cost you a ton of money in legal fees. If found guilty you may even be bankrupt.

Your website is like your house. The response sites on it are the walls where you invite postings. You own that wall and you have the right to remove anything you like from that wall any time you want. You have the right to ban posters from your wall if you wish. You don't have to give a reason. You have the duty to protect yourself.

Remember the old statement,"Freedom of speech does not give you the right to yell 'fire' in a crowded movie theater, (unless the theatre's actually on fire.)

Most of us see ourselves as part of the good guys and yes comments that we make that we feel passionate about may get removed but that in a convoluted sort of way is the price we pay for free speech.

Regarding the attempted murder at 142 Albert st.. The police have stated there is no connection between the Petrie murder and this attempted murder but when you get 2 murders in the same house in a short span of time something smells.. It's on the corner of Albert and Hughes, which is another street that is on the news on a regular basis, both for drugs and prostitute charges. That cruiser sitting on Albert with the lights flashing is probably killing the streetwalkers business today.. They haven't been nearly as visible as usual here..

How would you respond to Harper if he was to propose a 2014 deficit of $514 billion as the U S of A is proposing to do. Would you say that was somewhat unthinkable? or would you say that was being responsible in view of the financial climate south of the border, oh and also to raise the debt limit.. again.. I think the U S will be passing on this debt not to just their grand children but two or three more generations after that...

I agree with you regarding the Vietnam War, it was silly of the U S to get involved, Stupidity of the Military/Politicians to think that vitually raw recruits could do a better job than the French Foreign Legion could do, and also be somewhat micro-managed from 5 thousand miles away. One of the worst things that happened was the deminished trust in the command, spending lives to take ground and then giving it back to be fought over again and again.

Bounder, I think you hit on the heart of the matter. One man's opinion is another man's censorship. We all, consciously or unconsciously, come from based viewpoints. It's normal to see our viewpoint as logical and correct and see the fallacies in the viewpoints of those we disagree with. We rarely see or admit the errors or the attitudes in our own thinking that predispose us to act in certain ways.

We all censor things whether we admit it to ourselves or not. On this site many posters tell many other posters to go away in much more colorful language than I am using. That is a form of censorship.

I would suggest that the conversation you and I have been engaged in is non-censorship. We have been reasonably polite and respectful to each other even if we haven't agreed completely. Neither one of us has urged the other to do something anatomically impossible or insulted the other person's character.

I call that a non - censored adult conversation. Nice talking to you, bounder.

Is this the quote that has some posters dumping on the judge at the Seaton bail hearing? I think it should be taken into account that this is only a reporter's take on it. If the judge happened to be surprised, so what? I think most of us are surprised along with him because most of these guys want bail. As for being frustrated, how does the reporter know? If he said it, she should have quoted him as saying it. As to the comment from a poster that we have the dumbest judges, some examples may be in order.

We had a 13 billion surplus before Harper won his thin margin and then he was in the red by July of 2008 to the tune of 7 billion that is before the Bush fiasco that plunged the world into a near depression.
It went downhill all the way since then but with some artful thievery he has managed to artificially call this a balanced budget. took 3 billion from the defense budget to cover their deficit

read the whole report on it and read it--it's all smoke and mirrors--since Harper will be gone, none of this is worth the paper it is written on...
dust2 2/11/2014 11:43:06 PM Report

>"Age gives wisdom, experience and perspective..."

It *can*, age doesn't automatically give you wisdom, experience and perspective. It's wrong to assume a soccer player with 100 games played is a better than a soccer player with 10 games. Sure that 100 game player has more game experience, but he could mentally absorb less and have worse decision making skills. More games doesn't mean anything, it's about how you play and the information you take from it, how your decisions affect the game and how your opponents decisions affect the game.

It's why tennis players with a year of experience can beat a tennis player with five years of experience. The new player tries harder, wants to learn as much as possible, applies his knowledge properly, practices more and generally wants to be better.

"You said students went away to college or uni and never came back. Which are you?"

It doesn't matter. What if I was your boss? What if I was a 30-something CEO? What if I did well making an iPhone app and I'm set for life?

So let me get this straight. Millions are going into job creation for young people. That equates to the continuance of internship programs with government departments to a max of 2 years. That person is dumped and another victim is brought in. 80 % of the funding actually goes to administrative costs little goes to actual wages. But this will allow backfilling of many provincial and federal full time jobs that have been hacked away.
I thought that conservatives were about less government and more free market? So what right does the umpa lumpa and fat boy harper have to start tampering with a competitive market place such as the border towns and cross border shopping? He cannot reduce tariffs unilaterally without reopening portions of NAFTA and other agreements. If they reduce taxes or create a rebate program then that is corporate welfare, cant force companies to reduce their profit margin it just isn’t the conservative way to do so!
In the mean time, Sault Ste. Marie continues to have federal and provincial jobs relocated out of the area and nay an objection from any of our representatives from any level of government. But that’s ok according to some because we have chosen to live in northern Ontario and its our fault.
