theprotector 2/10/2014 8:27:13 AM Report
well dust that simply is not true. You are jumping to conclusions again.
What do you purpose? A physical assesment of people to determine their ability to secure their own mail?
Although a growing population of people have internet and email there are still many that do not, is in part from age and in addition those living in remote areas, now these remote areas can simply mean 40km in any direction of Sault Ste. Marie where if you want internet it is cost prohibitive (ie (turbohub) however even that in many areas are not effective if more than a few miles from the main hi-way.
Who determines who gets home delivery or not?
dust2 2/10/2014 8:40:45 AM Report
yes people in remote areas are likely to not have internet, but if someone is physically unable to walk to a community mailbox, they're likely unable to get groceries and other necessities. to make home delivery out to be some kind of absolute 'necessity' is ridiculous, the mail can still be received by walking to a community mailbox.
the complaining about the issue is a bit much. people can still get their mail, every day.
the issue with rural people is a small one too. the northern ontario population is pretty low compared to southern ontario. while a rural mail service might be requested up here, it's something that wouldn't be common at all in southern ontario.
bounder 2/10/2014 8:53:37 AM Report
I do have the turbo hub 23 minutes from the Highway/ 50 minutes from town, and it works just fine.
My c phone has a full six bars, so you would have to go a lot further than that to loose service. That was not always the case , new towers are going up all over.
Jimssm 2/10/2014 8:56:08 AM Report
Although I agree with you that the reaction is a bit overdone, this Supermailbox thing is just another example of the government (or any corporation) lowering our expectations for service.
Do you really believe Canada Post is going to save a lot on this ? What will actually happen is that our service will be lowered and their budget will remain about the same because they will find another way to waste it.
It's how ALL governments work.

Wicket 2/10/2014 9:28:55 AM Report
Canada Post as it exists now, leaves a lot to be desired. Five to seven days for mail to arrive from London to the Soo; ELEVEN days for a small package to go from the Soo to Sudbury!!! Since they no longer sort the mail locally, instead of next delivery locally, it takes up to five days.
The U.S. postal service even delivers on Saturday. Mail delivery from California to Soo, Michigan - 3 days. Our system is already broken and making the proposed changes is not going to fix it, contrary to what Dust believes.

Just a question, as I couldn't care less about the mail and I don't have an opinion about it, but most of it is privatized. The distribution part of it. I understand they have to increase the fees for the service, but if they are planning to eliminate overhead, why are not plans to reduce the fees for the service?
The other question is, why are the maintenance of the community boxes assigned to a contractor, whom in time sales it to a sub contractor, makes money on the fly and the sub contractor will not comply with the standards of removing the snow and ice just because they didn't receive the payment from the contractor.
Last, if you compare the services with other countries, does every country reduce the service to the public? Or drops the luxury pension plans no longer sustainable because the baby boom generation is over and out and most have been replaced with machines, robots or their jobs and contributions shipped to another country.
Michigan was in bankruptcy, almost, and today it has a balanced budget and a billion dollars surplus.

also, they don't waste your tax dollars, they waste THEIR dollars. what's so hard to understand that once you pay taxes, that money isn't yours, it's the governments. they use it to fix the roads that you drive on, among other things. when you pay mcdonalds, and they put a new item on the menu, did they waste YOUR money you gave them? no, it's theirs.
the level of entitlement for tax payers is ridiculous. you pay taxes, it's part of living in a country with a government, stop complaining like you have the solutions and answers (news flash, you don't)

it's about entitlement dummy. we use government services, and we pay for it.
it's not my fault you can't understand a simple analogy. the point is you're paying an entity for a service or good, which is why once you pay them, it's not your money. the government is the same as a business, give us money and we provide you with services you need.
it's sad how many under-educated people here get upset because they pay taxes and can't understand how a government can't make everyone 100% happy.
dust2 2/10/2014 2:30:17 PM Report
to say it's "your" money once it's paid to the government is just foolish. it's a childish attitude that even though you're using government services, it's still "your money".
this is the same whining and complaining that gets ignored by the government because it's anything but constructive criticism. I see so many complainers here with little to no solutions, and the solutions that are recommended are beyond laughable. people here with no business experience or logical understanding of government services are telling the government they're making mistakes and wasting their money? the dumb, angry crowd gets really tiring after a while.

I am a customer at MacDonalds... I give them money and they provide me a service (food) If I don't like the product, I go elsewhere. If I feel I am not getting my money's worth, I can choose to go elsewhere.
I am NOT a customer of the government, I am a SHAREHOLDER. The Government of Canada, Ontario, and Sault Ste. Marie are 100% owned by their citizens. To represent us (by proxy) we elect MPs, MPPs, and Aldermen. They make decisions on our behalf and we have the right to call them and complain and elect other representatives if we choose.
I expect you have never been to a shareholders' meeting of a large corporation... they can get pretty testy with decisions the CEO and Board of Directors have made.
dust2 2/10/2014 5:36:24 PM Report
Fair point, you can shop elsewhere if you're not happy at McDonalds, the government is our only option.
Don't you agree that public opinion can be wrong? dated? ignorant? I know most people mean well, but that doesn't mean we should listen to them. Think of the people who are against the winfarms, should their opinions decide what energy decisions we make? People are uneducated, as much as people hate the windfarms, it's foolish to think we shouldn't be building them and adopting safer/cleaner energy sources. People here are under the mindset that we can keep using oil and climate change is all bs, should we take those people seriously even though they are tax payers?
It's why you can't make everyone happy. Some people care way too much about the elderly, some animals, some transportation. There are people who think we should be spending millions saving homeless dogs, and there are people who think we should be spending protecting ourselves against terrorists. Who's right? Who's wrong?
It's why your tax dollars aren't usually "wasted", they're just used in ways some people might not agree with. But if we let the general population decide what to do with the money, it's game over.
bounder 2/10/2014 5:38:29 PM Report
Right there is where the problem is happening, we elect , they make decisions on our behalf, we don't like, re-elect, should be make proposals to the electors and we will let you know if we like them.

I agree about the shareholders meeting, but did you see the article today about investors wanting Microsoft to kill Bing, Surface, and Xbox?
As much as shareholders and investors are important, they're just investors. They're there to make money, that's it. Sure the Xbox division might be losing money, but Xbox is huge for Microsoft. All investors care about is profit and proper ROI, if they don't see something making money they want it killed. People who run that business know you sometimes need to take a loss to make a gain.
I trust the decisions of a CEO or upper management at the company more than the investors. Investors know how to make money, the people running that business know how to provide a product/service that makes money.

Trevone if you noticed my comments are only in response to the crap that is being tossed my way. Possibly you should also post to those that attack out of the blue. Then again you could scroll on by or simply mind your own business. Your call.

Spark7, It is mind boggling is it not? Then again not a huge surprise for some of the comments on here that pass for conversation.

Sparky, I never got into the reality shows. Probably because I only had basic cable and didn't have the channels they appeared on. I got rid of my cable, increased my internet speed and use my tv for a computer screen. Now I watch whatever I want, whenever I want. I watched the Breaking Bad series. Got downright addicted to that!! I watched it three times. LOL! Took me a while to get over that addiction but I do believe I'm clean now! I'm currently watching the Fringe series.

Do either one of you watch "House hunters international". I love it! Other than that not much else worth watching. I like the History channel(sometimes).

And you just gotta love that commercial where the rodeo cowboy is bragging about how over time he broke damn near every bone in his body.Like some kind of badge of honor. But he's feelin alright now because he wears the Cooper t-shirts and underwear.

Waiting for season 3 of Game of Thrones to be released on Bluray Feb 14th.

Grump, Lately quality of the posts I compare to watching an episode of Two Broke Girls with a smattering of E Talk now!

To Steely you misconstrued my comment totally in the wrong way. Sorry to give you the wrong idea. It must be sad to be alone. Your turn will come someday.

I never did try the breaking bad series but I noticed that you commented one time that the soundtrack was really good so maybe I will give it a shot.I know from stuff you posted here that I can trust your taste in music.
Grump 2/10/2014 7:47:05 PM Report
David P. Now that is a tough call listening to two broke girls and e-talk vs. Duck Dynasty's Bounder, Steely and Hunter. Brutal choice but at least the shows are pretty much fantasy while the others are sort of a low life reality show. LMAO. I think I would rather go to the swamp and dig them a new home as long as I didn't have to listen to more of this mindless crap. The shows would be the least of a poor choice.
Pink Peony 2/10/2014 7:49:43 PM Report
Gurpy, no I haven't seen that show.
Jim, you don't have to wait until the 24th to watch the last 8 episodes of Breaking Bad. If you do a search for "watch breaking bad online"...you'll find the series.
It really was well done! The acting was amazing like you said. The writing, the way they pulled you in, everything. Awesome music too! During my third time around watching it, I paid more attention to the music. That's when I heard that song by The Limeliters and then came across that playlist I posted not too long ago.

Good evening P.P. I haven't heard from you for a while. Hope all is well with you and that very nice young man you raised so well. Had my knee replaced and was back to work in about 5-6 weeks and no pain other than the one I get here in the posterior from the Swampers. lol Take care.

Sparky, if you watch the series, let me know what you think of it.
Here you go. A song from it.
Grump, glad you didn't have any complications from the surgery. My ex has a cobalt hip in him. He's been having issues for the past couple of years. Just the other day, I came across an article where a couple of people where having symptoms of heart failure. It turned out that they were being poisoned from their cobalt hips. Ugh!!
My son is doing well. Where he works is great. The big wigs invited him for lunch one day. They asked his opinion on matters. Good company. I may move back down to TO. I'll wait until it's closer to renew my mortgage so I don't have to pay the bank too much of a penalty when I sell the house.

rw WOW from the head know it all himself. With all the B.S. you have posted of late. Now why would I give a furry rat's butt what you think or say? By the way good Editorial in the Star from Sun Media, very critical of gov't spending but they never said Harper or Tories once. Talk about biased reporting but they must be pretty sick of Steve to even go that far. Now you and your posse take care and keep on praising Harper, like it will do one damn bit of good. LMAO.

"Reality Check---Where did you get the idea that Canada Post was pulling back on their plans for Community Boxes ?"
The post referred to the U.S., not Canada. I was answering flyhawk, who had said the U.S. had finally cancelled Saturday delivery. My info was that it had backed off on this and was still providing the service.
