Three cheers for Dead End Kid on the job loss at Future Shop story.

PipeBomb, I have tried with my WORDS OF THE WEEK listings and other means but having seen most of the errors keep returning from the same people I think it is time to give up the fight. There were a few success stories and I am grateful for those.
Jimssm 2/2/2014 7:20:05 AM Report

It would have to have been WORDS OF THE HOUR with all the errors popping up on here lately.

I feel your pain as seeing something misspelled is a pet peeve of mine.

If you're going to present an idea or argument in a public forum, have enough respect for your fellow readers to at least make an effort to use proper grammar, proper spelling, and an argument that is factual and makes sense. It just takes a few seconds to check spelling and not much more to get your ideas together a little neater and check your facts instead of just cutting and pasting a Google search.

Personally, I think it's a lost cause.
David Poluck 2/2/2014 7:32:35 AM Report

Fly and Grump and others often use the terms "swamp" and "swampers" "swamp gas" in regards to those posters with views on the right. I can only surmise by the frequency and conversations that they are used as terms of endearment used between friends of long association.

I'm curious. What handles are given to those on the left from those friends on the right?

David P. Actually it's generally hard to tell what they call Fly and I as many are scrambled symbols, some just rude references, others so badly spelled that one couldn't tell. Many are so far from the facts that the message must be for others. That said I'm sure you are correct that they are terms of great affection for a couple of sweet old guys like us. Nice guys, anyone who thinks the local potical heirachy is working has their head up their ass! Everyone from the duh mayor, to the mpp to Hayes, even the chamber of commerence has been given the numbers and nothing, not a word! This will be a huge election issue at all levels, names dates, emails, and yep lack of action. Should have someone do a story about this group "Those who help destroy the sault to better their personal position"
Shameful each and everyone of them should be ashamed! Each had an opportunity to act and they didnt, they didnt because either they are stupid and lazy or they care nothing about the devestaion in other people's lives.

DP...really, who cares?
Those responses are almost without wit or wisdom. They are childish but worse - they are repetitive and lacking originality.I concern myself more with their fallacious theories and lack of factual analysis.
They are more to be pitied than scorned. But they are indicative of the mean-spirited harangues of their leaders from Harris to Harper and Cheney and friends.
Sad really because I've had many friends over the years who are conservative, thoughtful thinkers.
The Swampers are none of those.
statusquo 2/2/2014 9:57:18 AM Report

I am curious to know what our local politicians could have done to prevent the loss of jobs at Future Shop, or Sears or any other retail outlet.

Margins in almost all sectors of the retail industry are very thin . Add to that more and more people shopping online and particular to the Sault, across the river and it is surprising that there even is the number of retail businesses still open in the Sault.
I very seldom if ever shop across the river . I do not shop at Walmart .
I doubt very much that if I did , the amount saved would significantly impact my personal finances.
The world, not just the Sault is changing and we better get used to it. Globalization, automation , rapid advances in online shopping and overnight delivery make brick and mortar businesses, such as Future Shop obsolete .

Bobby Nerves 2/2/2014 10:06:03 AM Report

Citing Lewis Carroll:
'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less.'

If you pretend to ignore the meaning of swampers, probably you are one of them.

Contrariwise, if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn't, it ain't. That's logic.

BIG BROTHER 2/2/2014 10:17:26 AM Report

I'm wondering just when the Queenstown Merchants Association are going to realize that parking meters are a huge detriment to downtown shopping. It's not the 25 cent meter charge. It's the zealousness of the meter police. They are grossly over anxious to nail errant parkers when the meter runs out. They stand next to meters that are about to run out, to make sure they 'nail' the culprits. Get a ticket and it's a huge hassle trying to pay the ticket. City Hall is the only placee to make the payment. Don't pay the ticket and now it's tossed up to the Provincial Court level.
BIG BROTHER 2/2/2014 10:19:29 AM Report

I see parking meters on Gore Street. Talk about redundancy!! They should be paying people to park on Gore. All the side streets...Spring, Brock, etc. Sad joke, IMO. Job creation program.

I knew that I was onto something when I coined the phrase 'swamp people' and it became part of the Blue Room lexicon even with those who inhabit it.
It is not a term of endearment. But it has become an identifier for those low-level thinkers and sarcastic snipers who lurk, name call and vanish.
Bobby Nerves 2/2/2014 10:31:01 AM Report

How right you are BB.

And if you'd like to see one parking enforcement laborer upset, play the parking angel and pretend you will deposit a coin in an expired meter.
BIG BROTHER 2/2/2014 10:38:45 AM Report

Now what`s up with that Bobby. I`ve had them give me a speech when doing the angel thing. First of all, most meters are buried under snow this time of year. You can`t get near them. From the road to the side of the meter where the money goes in isn`t always a clear pathway. Over the snowbank to get to the meter.

Wow Steely that's the first thing you have said that I believe.
BIG BROTHER 2/2/2014 10:54:53 AM Report

I know what you are getting at, but the costs that aren`t figured into the whole thing is the lost business to the merchants.

I know someone who runs a business on Queen. They told me that if they lift the meters, the employee`s of the business`would be parking in the prime spots all day and taking away the shopper`s parking spots. Well then, it`s therefore their own fault.

A friend of mine parked on Queen one night and then on Hines Street, the laneway off Queen to the old Four Winds. She was putting up a display for a business on he corner of Hines and Queen. She got two tickets in two nights, while volunteering at the Midnight Madness event. No parking on Queen during those events and she had display material to unload.

One ticket was not on her car when she left. The other ticket she paid. Two months later, she gets a notice from the Prov. Courts....the ticket is now 30 dollars. She went to City Hall to let them know she paid the ticket. They said `yup`, but what about the other ticket....the one she didn`t even know she had. Now she can fight it in Small Claims Court...great option. Makes a person want to volunteer for the Downtown Merchants Association.

Wild Turkey 2/2/2014 11:21:38 AM Report

@B.B.---You are absolutely right about the parking meters.-----There really is no problem to be solved there. The meters are a necessary evil.
The Downtown Assoc. called for suggestions to improve their lot.I thought --great idea---get rid of the parking meters.----Then I thought about the consequences.I arrived at the same conclusion as your Shop-Owner friend. Some employees would wreck it for everybody else by tying up the best spots all day.And a little bonus--it provides needed employment.I too, have had the odd go-round with some of those crusty old meter guys, but everybody has a bad day once in a while.
I once felt so strongly about a bad ticket that I went to court, fought it, and won.---So I saved the 25 dollar fine, but it cost me 25 dollars for the polaroid film I used for evidence. It was fun, though.
Bobby Nerves 2/2/2014 11:24:38 AM Report

We have two meters on Queen and we do the cleaning around the meters and the path to the road, plus we always deposit coins to keep them on green.

On the other side, the side street, there is a meter in front of the house and right now it's buried under 4' of snow and three feet to each side. Parking there it's OK, but getting to the meter is a bit challenging.

Many merchants on Queen do clear a path by the meter, but to be honest, since the hospital was relocated, the traffic went down about 90%, then the paper mill another 5% and very soon the steel mill will go under, it will be a walk in the park.
BIG BROTHER 2/2/2014 11:31:59 AM Report

Our fair city is sprawling, new subdivisions opening at record levels and yet, the population hasn`t increased at all and more likely, has decreased.

This means the city services must cover a larger area. Snowplowing, etc. must be provided to a larger area. This can only lead to higher costs to individual landowners since the tax base hasn`t increased. Our Second Line bypass is now a main thoroughfare.

right wing 2/2/2014 1:39:37 PM Report

The Sault operates several free, two hour parking lots.
On top of this parking meters are operational from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and free on weekends. I googled it (oh for shame) and they have around five hundred meters.
The parking authority also hands out fines for illegal parking, in front of fire hydrants, no parking zones, handicapped areas, blocking lane ways, double parking etc., so yes the revenue they bring in pays the wages and then some.
The meters are a loonie for an hour.
If you have ever ventured outside the city walls to a big place you would quickly learn how CHEAP parking is in this city.
Once again much-a-do-about-nothing.
Ever notice that most of the complainers are loonies that make the kind of money that a loonie for parking is peanuts.

When I emigrated from the U.K. and got married here back in 1975, my wife said, "Thank God we can move elsewhere" and we did for education and for jobs. All of her friends did the same and went to Ottawa, TO, Vancouver, the U.S. and overseas. ALL of them have come back.
Now I know you don't like people over 50 so I'll tell you also that my daughters' generation (around 30) left with the same thoughts and most of them, too, are either back or trying to get back.

does "89" count for something? I mean, it's 20 points higher than 69.

Well Grump,

I can't give details, some kiddies might still be up and scouring the blue room for relevant tidbits on life, God and swamp biology.....what I can safely say is that it involves a large cantaloupe, muscle relaxers and water based lubricant....

Is there anyone still left watching the Stupor Bowl or is everyone just wearing their thumbs out switching to Duck Dynasty and the Weather Channel?
Bobby Nerves 2/2/2014 9:21:50 PM Report

"does this mean that you have not graduated or does it mean you have not come back?"

steelworker 2/3/2014 1:02:44 AM Report

Don't make fun of gardens.
