Now that we solved the middle east situation yesterday, what would benefit from our attention today?...I know, how about places with inaccurate or inappropriate names? Is Turkey full of it? When I was in Greece the food didn't seem greasy.my front lawn in Greenland isn't doing so well. When touring NL I visited a place called Dildo. I remained firmly seated in my car just in case.

Your turn...

It was a tough town....

I was holed up in Boring, Oregon, wondering whether I should try someplace different. So I hopped in my car and drove to Why, Arizona, to figure things out. After a few days I found my answer in Whynot, Mississippi: I needed a town with some life to it. I made a beeline for Disco, Tennessee, where I danced so much, I wore out my shoes.
I put the car on cruise control and drove to Lonelyville, New York, for a stiff drink. I made a pit stop in The Bottle, Alabama, and finally hit rock bottom in Condemned Bar, California. Not surprisingly, I woke up the next morning in Cranky Corner, Louisiana. I knew that if I continued like this, I'd be headed straight to … Hell, Michigan...

The rock point, defining the shore of Old Woman Bay, has a profile on the point of the outcropping, appearing to be a silhouette of an old lady. The lake (Old Woman Lake) was likely names after the Bay, as it is the head waters, draining into the bay.

Most of the bays along the shore of Superior were named by the Voyageur's, designating certain spots as destinations across the lake.

Snobank 1/23/2014 12:44:33 PM Report

Why is Finn Hill called that? Obviously it must have something to do with people from Finland. Why did the hill get named after them? We don't have any Italian Hills, Greek Hills or Irish Hills in the Sault. If we were to name a hill something today, say Polish Hill, would that be racist?

My father, who was born in the last year of World War One said it was called Finn Hill when he was a boy and he used to toboggan on it as a youngster. Maybe the answer is lost in the mists of time.

Snobank, good question, even remember my parents calling it Finn Hill, perhaps Finish people who owned the property and farmed there at one time, called it that themselves..or that was someone's last name. As in Garson's Hill, Elliot's hill - both off of People's Rd, can't remember the name of the street.
Landslide Ski hill is called that because the land did actually slide in the early 1900s and created the steep hill.
