Good morning everyone, a tad cooler again this A.M. Great movie picks Status, I haven't seen the Trap in ages but saw the Searchers again not that long ago. Great movies. We must have hurt Wisen's feelings as he didn't return last evening. I didn't think he had any, go figure. Then again maybe he crawled into his 60 pounder for comfort. Have a great day all.
bounder 1/20/2014 7:15:50 AM Report

I see Harper is ready to give another 60 million plus in aid to the Palestinians, that's on top of the 650 million already sent there, pissing away your hard earned bucks.
Should be looking after Canadians at home FIRST who are living in poverty.
Funny how we always help groups in conflict who have tons of money for weapons but none for food and water and its people.

or traveling to Isreal with over 200 people at are expense! For what, we will never have any major trade with this country, it makes no sence. Cant even attack it on the religous front since he is still doling out money to the other side.

Today has dawned cold but by Sunday it should be colder and Superior will freeze over harder than a hobo turd.Or Harper's heart.
Of course this is not climate change any more than the fires on the west coast or floods on the east coast are not just cycles of weather.
Spellchecker 1/20/2014 7:50:14 AM Report

We had this kind of climate change when I was a little gaffer.

There is little money for native reserves but plenty to hand out on this expensive trip of Harper.150 to 200 "guests" who flew over with him have their expenses paid too. How much are we willing to tolerate ? Are we not welcome in parts of this world unless we bring money What is the point of Harpers trip? It is interesting that he is addressing parliament over there but we can hardly get him to show up for parliament in Canada.
theprotector 1/20/2014 8:17:38 AM Report

How about you get your facts straight.
Less than thirty of those traveling are at the taxpayers expense.
You know, security, secretaries, etc.
The rest pay their own way.
I won't comment on the rest of the Harper Hating as it would not matter where he traveled there would be the same lame bitching and complaining about it.

flyhawk25 1/20/2014 9:00:06 AM Report

Yeah...pretty much like the Obama stories of shipping the family dogs on tax payers' dimes for vacations.
The truth?
Neither side wants to handle the truth.

get your facts right at least 30 private citizens are being brought over at taxpayers expense and that's not secretaries or security, the rest pay.

@Retreaded--- Harper and the other Feds think that they have downloaded all responsibility for the F. N. to the provinces,or to Nunavit(Their very own piece of Canada).
They seem to think if they ignore them, then maybe they will go away.Where will they go?Well after all we are building them a road, all the way to the Arctic ocean. With global warming , they will soon have lots of virgin land to plant their traditional crops and live off the land like the good old days. And it will create employment, because that territory will soon be awash in liquor, and hard drugs. You need only to catch a few episodes of Alaska State Troopers to see what's in store for those miserable souls in our Arctic.
As far as giving money to the Palestinians,That is a good thing. The West have been ignoring them since 1948,and it's good P.R. to appear to be doing something. If only we could return to our old role as peace keeper and mediator, instead of appearing to take Israels side in the conflict.
lookaround 1/20/2014 9:22:02 AM Report

Bounder we only have a year or so left. Patience patience. He has managed to take that thin majority he won and turned his lack of leadership forALL provinces into a majority of people who WILL NOT vote for the Regressive Neo-Cons.
lookaround 1/20/2014 9:25:05 AM Report

Harper is travelling on my dime and so what will this little useless sojourn do for the unemployed in Canada? or What will he bring back for manufacturing? Nothing. So why go.
sportsman 1/20/2014 9:32:19 AM Report

Why cant they sink the Norgomma in the middle of lake superior, it would be a nesting place for fish?
theprotector 1/20/2014 9:33:40 AM Report

why is harper so in love with this part of the world? Whats in it for him?
Wisenheimer 1/20/2014 9:40:44 AM Report

T.P. .. Have no idea what he's doing in "Isreal". To find out what he's doing in Israel, pick up any reading other than People Magazine.
bounder 1/20/2014 9:48:11 AM Report

Sportsman, the Norgoma would have to be stripped of all toxic materials and fluids , very expensive, scrap the sucker, it's a floating money pit. Help some poor people with the cash, or is that to difficult to comprehend.
Retreaded 1/20/2014 9:50:39 AM Report

How many dollars did the NORGOMA bring in last summer? Was there a profit or loss? If a loss...SCRAP THAT JUNK HEAP NOW.
Jimssm 1/20/2014 10:01:10 AM Report

A friend of mine is on the junket to Israel with Harper.

As a businessman, he had to 'pay his own way'....

$ 1250 dollars, tax deductable... includes hotel and flight.

Jimssm 1/20/2014 10:04:25 AM Report

I think the Norgoma had $6000 in revenue last year.

The City funded them $15,000.

So yes, they lost a LOT of money.
Wild Turkey 1/20/2014 10:14:23 AM Report

A while back, we were on the road to a unique tourist attraction."Planes--Boats--and Trains"We have the highly successful plane part in the Bushplane Museum. We have yet to do much with the Train part---but what if C.N.,or Via were to build a heritage type train station, haul some antiquated rolling stock and locomotives to the site and have an out door train museum. Put us on the trans-Canada Via route to both oceans. We are halfway across Canada and the Soo would be a good place to start a trip in either direction.
As far as the boat, or ship content, we have lost the tour boat. But what if we got that back and then started running excursions to Toronto, and Thunder Bay.Maybe Chicago. Why not drag the Norgoma to that derelict property opposite The Old Stone House and open a fine Seafood restaurant in it.Lets start building again instead of tearing everything down.
lookaround 1/20/2014 10:23:37 AM Report

A spelling mistake is forgivable but spending my money on trips that so me no good is not forgivable.

My taxes go for Canada as a whole and collectively for all citizens. I pay taxes to ensure the well being of Canadians. This means for education, for healthcare, for safety and security and for infrastructure. This Kabuki quasi disfunctional government is spending hard earned money on their own ideology.
theprotector 1/20/2014 10:26:30 AM Report

wise its funny how you feel the need to target my spelling since that is about all you can target in my posts. Harper, like you is a fat ass who is only doing things for themselves and could careless about anyone else.
theprotector 1/20/2014 10:30:42 AM Report

I would comment on his policies in various areas, however an analysis of this nature is far beyond your ability to understand wise! You would rather follow a moron then think for yourself. These policies have caused and will continue to cause a great deal of harm to Canada, not just domestically but on the international front as well. Any fool can/should be able to see that even you.

When I was a public servant in Ottawa, much of my work was as a coordinator, hence dependent upon input and feedback from others. I always found it annoying that those who made the least effort to keep others informed were the ones who bitched the most when something hadn’t been referred to them. In a similar vein, when consulting this site, I always find it amusing to read how those who are the most virulent in constantly tearing certain public figures apart (e.g. President Obama, who is none of our business in any case!) are so righteously indignant when another poster criticizes or belittles their idols (e.g. Prime Minister Harper, who in fact is very much our business.)
mr.monty 1/20/2014 10:50:07 AM Report

the reason harper has gone to Israel and Palestine is to garner votes back home. all the Jewish community will vote for him. so he is spending money to buy votes. hopefully this will backfire on him. just wondering if harper is Jewish!

Bounder...

Over the last few years we have contributed some $650 million to the Palestinians. From what I have seen on the news they have maybe spent $50 million of that on food and medicine and the other $600million on arms and ammunition. Perhaps maybe instead of cash we should consider sending them the equivilant in food and medical supplies with a large maple leaf emblazoned on the side of the boxes. That way we could be paying our own people for the supplies, and not put money into others pockets. I am all for giving aid to people, however I am NOT for giving aid to kill or maim others. You want medical supplies, fine we have lots of pharma companies, you want food we have lots of agriculture, you want cash for guns, 'P' off!!!
theprotector 1/20/2014 11:35:27 AM Report

Protector...

There is NO accounting of the money given, that was what the two accountants recently killed in Afghanistan were doing out there, trying to see where the monies given had gone.. Monies given to the Haiti disaster have never been fully dispersed and if you check very little has been done with what was given....
theprotector 1/20/2014 11:53:35 AM Report

wise you attach anyone who even suggests liking the us president with a label of being a "leftie". You need to keep in mind that our current government was poised to radically change our fincial structure to model after what the bush cartel set up in the usa, then it happened. Everyone was caught with their hand in the cookie jar. All of a sudden Harper and the umpalupa changed their minds and held steady on the liberal policies to weather the storm.
As a country we need to diversify and steer away from the USA ecomonic disaster as quickly as we can anything less would be irresponsible.
Bill_the_Cat 1/20/2014 12:20:50 PM Report

prot: I am no fan of Bush, but he didn't start the ball rolling on banking deregulation. It was Clinton who passed the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act and the Community Reinvestment Act which opened the door to sub-prime loans. There is plenty of blame on both sides of the political divide for that debaucle.

As for regulation, I wouldn't mind having a US style financial regulator. They have teeth. The Ontario Securities Commission is a paper tiger at best. Conrad Black was tried and charged in the US. There is no way he could have been tried either here or in the UK (it is doubtful his acts would be considered a crime in Canada or the UK). He was never charged here, even though he has plenty of assets and interest here.
Wisenheimer 1/20/2014 12:22:06 PM Report

Veering away from the richest economy in the world would mean selling our oil, LNG, minerals etc. to Asia. Lefties generally get all apoplectic at that scenario. I would suggest all of the above.
(Apoplectic equates to getting ones panties in a knot.)

Yes Clinton sigend it in but it was Gramm (a republican) that drafted the bill and did the lobbying for it and held the democrats hostage over outher bills until it was signed, so you are only partially right. The changes were of different beginnings than many beleive.

Prot: such is the nature of politics. Democrats are just as much in the pay of large banks as the Republicans. My friend likes to call them the Evil Party and the Stupid Party. I tend to agree, though which one is which depends on the speaker.

Bush at least tried to curtail Fannie and Freddy, but was blocked by Congress. Unlike some, I don't lay every act in the lap of the POTUS. Congress is sometimes too lazy or stupid to get their houses in order.

The US system is a wonderfully anarchic system sometimes.
theprotector 1/20/2014 1:54:42 PM Report

you are right, I guess it doesnt matter who or what party is in power, they all politic.
Its a mere popularity contest now, and who can get the voting public out and generate some new votes from segments that typically dont vote.
Regardless our government came close to making a grave mistake. One that I hope is a path they do not follow in the future. There is not a country in the world that has weathered this down turn that did not have strict banking and finical laws in place.
