Nice and quiet before the a-holes show up. Anyway; off to work to support all you pensioners.

Steelworker, we pensioners are grateful for your contribution. I guess you're pleased that we left in order to provide a job for you.

Good morning Spelly,

I thought pensioners get their pension payments whether or not other workers continue to contribute to the plan, or am I wrong about that too?

Spellchecker 1/16/2014 6:48:22 AM Report

If it is the same as it was when I left, the workers don't contribute directly to the pension plan anyway. Hourly wages are less than they would be if it were not for pension considerations. When we begin to get OAS that amount is deducted from the steel plant pension. Regardless of common perception we're not getting something for nothing.

Grump---that theater incident is a classic case of American "rights " clashing, with a horrible end result.
The shooter had a right to carry "arms"--The victim had a right to freedom of speech.
The conversation escalated and the guy threw popcorn at the now enraged shooter.
The shooter had no popcorn,so instead, He popped the guy.
This kind of stuff happens all the time, in restaurants, check-out lines, even in church.
It's a wonder to me there are not more reported incidents such as this.
Hopefully we can all file this incident away, and exercise some restraint when engaging in heated conversation.
At least here in the blue room, the antagonists are out of shooting range.

Tim Moen is the owner of a Fort McMurray video production company.
Tim Moen was recently asked to do some filming in Fort McMurray for a project Neil Young is working on.

This is from a blog that Moen posted on.

"In a blog entry posted Tuesday, Moen – who has described himself as “pro-oil and pro-environment” on his Twitter account – acknowledges the efforts Young is making. But he also points out what he feels was lacking from the musician’s filming agenda in the area.

“We did not film any reclaimed land. We didn’t film any new extraction operations using greener technology. We didn’t film any industry experts. We didn’t film Neil’s diesel burning bus that his crew rode in. We didn’t film the environmentally conscious community active in Fort McMurray. That stuff wasn’t on the agenda.”

As for Young’s comparison of Fort McMurray and Hiroshima, Moen has the following to say:

“I wonder if he meant Nuked Hiroshima or beautiful reclaimed Hiroshima today…These are serious claims that paint a pretty bleak picture and seem to lack any evidence.”

He ends with this message to the Canadian singer and song-writer:

“If you would’ve looked a bit closer at the people in this community developing this resource you’d have found people of kindred spirit, we are concerned about the environment and about the health of those that live around the oil sands…this is where our children live. We want to leave this world a better place like you do and we have the energy to do just that. I challenge you to find a community of oil producers anywhere else in this world that more closely aligns with your values of stewardship and respect for this Earth and it’s [sic] people. Not only do we not stone people to death, we don’t even use plastic grocery bags.”

soowat 1/16/2014 10:22:47 AM Report

Spelly:

I am assuming from your comments that you are a retired steelworker. While I am not a retired steelworker, I too, receive a pension. Despite the difference about the payer of our pension,we,like most other pensioners, paid towards our pensions through reduced pay for all of our working lives. If our employers (in many cases) had lived up to their obligations, there would be no concern for any pensioner that his/her pension fund would not be able to meet its obligations.
flyhawk25 1/16/2014 10:37:34 AM Report

Jimssm...I just read the blog in its entirety. Hmm...seems rw did a nice cut and paste job of what suited his needs and what did not.
Fair enough.
But your added info shed a different and more complete light on what happened.
I am not surprised that our resident neo-con would play with selective facts. That is generally followed by his moving on to another topic when challenged by the truth.
Just consider his agenda.
Wisenheimer 1/16/2014 10:40:05 AM Report

Steelworkers also declare that their pensions are funded by monies that otherwise would have been included in salary. While this may be true, pension money must be invested and create returns commensurate with the obligation to pay. When this doesn't pan out your pension fund turns into Greece or Detroit.

TP (aka eversons) you like Grunt, continue to bring a pea shooter to a knife fight.

right wing 1/16/2014 10:46:50 AM Report

You two make me laugh.
Nice try.
What I posted made the point.
The entire article further makes the point.
There is two sides to the story and whether the agenda is pro oil or against oil both sides can paint the picture they want.
I value articles such as this one by Moen as more informative and closer to the truth than the envirowackos or the blind to the environment oil executive.
Greenpeace has been caught doctoring its "evidence" several times.
It was simply pointed out the Young was doing the same.
right wing 1/16/2014 10:54:11 AM Report

Here ya go another carefully selected and creatively cut and pasted truth from the same story.

"Neil seemed genuinely surprised and impressed with some of the green initiatives happening in the community. He seemed to know little about the oil sands industry, he'd never heard of SAGD for example. His understanding seemed to be that bitumen is mined by digging giant open pits, using tonnes of water, and creating giant tailings ponds. He was unaware of the advances that have been made."
66cherokee 1/16/2014 10:55:10 AM Report

As I watched Neil Young last night, I wondered about what he has said lately. That stars don't need oil. I wonder what the tires on his vehicle was made of, the highway he was driving on. Sometimes these stars only come out when their popularity is on the downside. He is pushing his new album of course. Neil Young is like a lot of Canadians who have that cumbiya(spelling like it sounds) effect. A lot of people don't realize that the money received from those "tar sands" pay for education, health and a lot of social programs that otherwise wouldn't be offered. Yes, it would be nice to live in a perfect world, but that doesn't exist. Billions of money come into the government coffers, and if that went out the door, this country would be in dire straight.
flyhawk25 1/16/2014 11:15:21 AM Report

Seems to me that Young did learn from the experience.
Do I care what he thinks? No more than the average 'outsider'. He just happens to have a bigger stage and a temporary spotlight.
I try to look at both sides and don't trust any radical portrayal of the issue.
If they can extract oil there and preserve the environment - go for it.
I am no Pollyanna.I use oil products too and need them. But I'd like to ensure that our lands are protected.
I'm still looking for a objective scientific analysis.
And less name calling.

Flyhawk..

I want world peace, will it ever happen, hasn't in my lifetime. Will we ever be able to do without fossil fuels, I have grave doubts about that too. As long as I can remember there has always been resistance to new ideas regarding power, and until we can come up with an alternative to electricity there will always be. Coal fired station are efficient but produce CO gases as do gas and oil fired ones, Nuclear has a problems with used fuel rod disposal and of course a few accidents, solar and wind has the fuel supply problem, and of course water has that problem too at times... So what is the answer, I sure as heck don't know, but one thing for sure I do know is that the answer will not please everyone....
irishfey 1/16/2014 12:20:42 PM Report

Morning Folks.. Is nasty out there and i think it will get the same in here when i"m done ,lol.. I popped in yesterday at the tail end of some comments about the Bible, so i really don"t know what it was all about, but there is something i"d like to share with you all,, yep,, here we go ,lol During my studies of years ago i found something that was quite interesting and would like to share it. I always loved the book of Job, i think it was even written before the book of Genesis, so that would make it a few thousand years old. If you read Job 38v16, God says to Job.. "have you entered into the springs of the sea? "...The point is that the " Springs of the sea" were not discovered [ by Man ]fully ,till between 1977 and 1979. In 1930, the deep sea dives of William Beeb"s bathysphere provided a look at the ocean floor but no springs were discovered. In 1940 they tried again using the echo sounder, failed again. In 1960 they did find evedience of water coming up from the ocean floor... The first direct observations of the deep sea springs were made by Project Fomous in 1977, and on till 1979... Don"t get these mixed up with Volcanic Vents.. they are different... The point i"m just trying to make is for the folk that don"t believe in the Bible to take a closer look at it as The Springs of the Sea were mentioned years back before they were discovered. I meself find so many other things of interest that just prove the Bible to be true, but of course thats just MY opinion and of course Gods also. The one other thing i love about the book of Job, is how God addresses Job at the start of chapter 38. I know that some won"t read it so i"m going to go the exra mile and tell you it ,lol.. It starts as this... ""WHO is this that darkens my councel,by words without knowledge? Now prepare yourself like a MAN,, i will question You and You will answer ME!!"" These words should make you shudder in your boots!! Soooo You can believe this or not, up to you... I know that i will be slam dunked by some of you that will go the extra mile to discredit what i have said,, so hop to it ,lol I won"t be back on to make this a Holy War... What you up against is GOD, so i really suggest you take heed of how and what God said to Job!... Have a great day folks ,lol.. And of course.. God bless...

Folks that bash the bible, religion or a belief in God are disturbed in the mind and spirit.
They claim they don't believe in God, fine.
So why do they so desire to rip apart those that do...it's because they don't have what a Christian has...faith.
They don't understand it, have never tried.
They have undeveloped spirits.
They don't even understand that it matters not what they believe to be true or not for when death comes to each and every one of us individuals...you do the journey on your own.

I'm a Christian...

Do I have faith ?... I highly doubt it.

If I had to make a choice between dying right at this instant for my faith, or tucking my tail between my legs for a few more years in this life... I would probably choose the latter.....And I am not a coward.

...and I believe the vast majority of my fellow Christians would do the same.

Claiming to have faith and actually having REAL faith are worlds apart.

Rightwing... Thank you for your post, it meant a lot to see it. I seen a few more posts on here but i will bypass them.. One in particular did catch my eye though.. was the one about someone being a Christian but not having any faith.. Isn"t that what it"s all about?? Having faith in God,, without that we could not call ourselves a Christian. Anyway.. i thank you and at least you had the guts to speak up with the truth no matter what is said..... See you someday on the "upside"" ,lol... Makes me wonder how folks will feel at the last Trumpet call and find out that they just didn"t make the grade when Christ made it so easy for them to just believe and have faith.. like how hard is that??... saying a "good night" now, won"t be on later... Religion, any religion, stems from the period of human history where nobody had the smallest idea what was going on. Science was at it's infancy, the earth was flat, the sun circled around the earth, illnesses were punishments etc. It comes from the fearful and dark infancy of humankind, and is a puerile attempt to meet our thirst for knowledge and comfort.
It stems from our fear of the dark. It is comforting for some but for me it is a lie.
Religion does have it's place as a collective myth. It can be useful in unlocking our psyche and the scriptures, all of them, not just Christianity hold the key to what it is we are here to fulfill.
But taking any religious doctrine as fact and dressing up accordingly, both in garb or ritual is an infantile expression and a longing for mommies teet, and daddy's protection. Religion taken in the "literal" sense diminishes us as fully functioning human beings.
It is a fatalistic mindset and herein lies the danger.

Dealing with charities in developing countries I have met some very giving people. People who were never baptised, don't go to church, they don't pray or call themselves religious.

BUT...

They love and work every day for their fellow man.

They give most of the tiny amount of money they make away to those less fortunate.

Their homes are full all the time with people who need a place to stay and their meager dinner table has room for all.

Am I to believe that (if God exists) such people will be turned away by God (whoever he is) because they didn't believe in an image of Him created by men ?

Jim,

You are missing the point...or maybe not...I don't know.

It is not and never has been about you and me, it is about how we treat our fellow human being that counts. It is about our capacity for compassion.
If you really think about it, Christianity, the core essence is actually quite immoral. It is "scapegoatism"...I just made that word up...it's dumping our "sins" onto another human being so he can be sacrificed at the cross and we can be saved. the whole concept reeks of passing the buck and not taking responsibility, hence my earlier mention of being puerile and not owning up to becoming an adult.

One of the best ways to lose a friend is discuss religion.

If you live by the golden rule, perform random acts of kindness, don't break the law, respect and accept the fact that it is our differences that contribute to an interesting world, then what you call yourself is pretty much irrelevant to me. I will accept and respect your choice and only ask that you accept and respect mine.

To me that is the basis of Christianity. The bible thumpers should do more of that and less thumping (of thy fellow man). Too many claiming Christianity, while they pound the crap out of their fellow humans. I recall asking that question, sort of, in religion class. You know, not baptised. Those people are guaranteed a spot in limbo. But, since god blesses America, they're all going to heaven.

For whatever my two cents might be worth.. this is my own opinion. God is not a "person". God is sunshine on a beautiful day . a fresh breeze rustling thru the trees, the sound of water trickling in a meandering brook, the stars at night, the glistening beauty of snow, the first cry of a newborn baby, the smile you share with someone you love, a good honest heartfelt hug, a forever friend, a mountain trail, our ability to be compassionate, the sounds that musical instruments can make .... you get my drift.. its not some guys idea of God in long hair robe and sandals .. too many "Christians" are two faced hypocrites .. they "talk the talk but don't walk the walk" .

Last comment ,lol... Spelly, that was another good point to help prove the Bible is true [ He that sitteth on the circle of the earth ].... Gee , some of you just don"t get it!!! You cannot get to heaven by buying your way there , by doing good deeds, by helping others , by being good folk, etc. ! Yes , we dump our sins on Jesus as that"s why He came so He could carry the load for us , Is that really so hard to understand?? The only thing that God asks in return is for us to BELIEVE in the One He has sent. the only way to God is through His Son,, not through these big Religious orders and not even Billy Graham. So many Religious ... whatever... have screwed up the true meaning of God and His love and mercy for us... most of them are in it for the $$ bill and teach everything but the real truth! I"m tired and done!.... J.C.maby you should try the walking on water, it might be easier than drinking that crap,lol.... Jimssm.. that comment that you made about you would rather live a few extra years than die for your Faith?? You might want to rethink that, as a time will be coming that will make you make that choice.... Read the Bible.. GOD wins!!!!... Awww,, bless you all....
