Status, nice of you to think of me in the last few sentences of your 9:15 PM post last evening while engaging in your blasphemy with flyhawk. Have a wonderful day thinking about things you don't understand.

Spelly...as you know the weather on the island varies wildly from north to south.Oddly enough I just got a call from my neighbor who had gone out to Whiskey Bay on the weekend to check our places. He said there was only about an inch of snow where we are by the water. You'll recall I've driven through monsoons up to see you at Hilton where the sky is blue.
I've learned there are three weather areas between here and the southern tip of St. Joe.
The first seems to extend from here to Laird Hill, the second ends often on the mountain on the island and we get a more maritime effect in the south end from Huron.

Shaky---I never said that there were no Blacks in that time--I said it would have been difficult to find very many.

I have a picture showing a Black Man helping Jesus carry his cross. Obviously the Artist thought that too.

My Bible only says that the man who did that was from another country---Naturally it would not have been a Jew or a Roman--they would fear for their lives if they did that !

Yes, The Romans carried out the Crucifixion but it was the Jews who convicted Christ !

flyhawk25 1/15/2014 9:38:23 AM Report

OG...just to clarify for you as well.
I wrote that with my tongue firmly in cheek adopting a personna far outside mine.
But the reality is this.
The bible was recorded hundreds of years after Christ walked the earth and evolved from an oral tradition from a largely preliterate society.
It was codified by men under the control and influence of the early Christian church. Many if not most of them were unable to understand what they were transcribing.
A serious academic analysis will reveal that it was translated a number of times and each time subject to the nuances and vagaries of the language they used. And subject to the editing of the hierarchy to suit their purposes.
Many people believe it to be the inspired word of God. But many others also believe that it is no more so than the writings of MLK or Ghandi.
As literature it is lovely. As historical fact it is questionable.
What I really believe is my business and shall remain that.

Have to say something about the hypocrisy of Neil Young's comments about the oil sands.

First, he himself depends on the oil industry a lot more than he would have us believe. He uses cars, taxis, buses, planes, electricity generated by fossil fuels, etc. He also sold vinyl albums and CD's which all use plastic, made from petroleum products.

Second, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia produce heavy oil with far fewer environmental regulations than those in Canada. In Canada, oil sands companies must not only follow certain regulations but they must reclaim the land that is stripped of soil and restore it to a pristine state. Yet does Young criticize the dictatorships of Venezuela and Saudi Arabia? No, he goes after the environmentally better one, Canada. Rather cowardly and hypocritical as well.

BIG BROTHER 1/15/2014 3:16:35 PM Report

notpc,
Neil Young is not simply slamming the Oil Sands Development, per se. He is claiming that the Oil Sands Development is in violation of the treaties our government signed with the Natives and which are now being disregarded by our Federal Government. The Native people are being left out of the process and the Oil Sands are on Native Lands, as designated by the Federal Government, at the time.

Once a person understands just what the issues are, like Neil, they usually are sympathetic to the reality that it is us (our government) that is the hypocritical party to the deal. He doesn't claim expertise in the area, but apparently he can read and understands what a treaty is. Unlike some Canadians, who like to simplify the issue and blame the natives for even 'climate change'.

Besides, you can't compare the Oil Sands to Saudi oil or Venezuela oil, which is practically oozing out of the ground, in a very pure form. Oil Sands oil is strip mined, not pumped out of the ground.

Hey David Suzuki flew into Toronto to be at the Neil Young "we're against the oil sands" concert.
Two hippies for a single cause, how sweet.

Well I did what anyone would do with such a handy thing like google...I did some googling.
This is what I came up with.

David Suzuki's flight to fight oil.

1. The total carbon emissions for a flight from Vancouver Island to Ontario is 1,083 lbs CO2.

2. This is equivalent to 491 kg CO2e or 0.49 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents.

3. With radiative forcing in effect, the carbon emissions may increase by 2.7 times, so the CO2 equivalents would then be 2,925 pounds, equivalent to 1,327 kilograms or 1.33 metric tonnes.

4. These calculations are based on the distance from Vancouver Island to Ontario, which is 1,932 miles or 3,110 kilometers.

Now that is one huge carbon footprint to attend a concert.
Could one of you envirowackos take me a picture of 1.33 metric tonnes of C02 cause I'd like to make a poster of it with Suzuki and Young in the middle.

RW you have been a little more doolally than usual, today. Watch Neil on the National. He may have addled his mind a little, but, just think, it's still clearer than yours.
I really don't believe that he is in the least bit interested in the money. I think that's a psychological "projection" on steely's part. Young has a right to express his views just as anyone does. Harper spent $111M of our money giving us a message with no proof that his Action Plan ever got off the ground.
Who do we believe?
I'll watch and decide tonight.

Two questions

1. How much of that '60 pounder of Bacardi, $12.95 at Publix" did you consume before you posted today's drivel?

2. When are you taking out American Citizenship? Figure if we get rid of you and Ted Cruz the average IQ of Canadian citizens will go up significantly.

Will be watching Neil Young on CBC. I like the man because he is a straight shooter and not a bull $hitter like Harper. Like or not he has a point. Ever visit Fort Mac? It is an environmental disaster. White snow is not white but black. The smell is acrid and pungent.
The air is stale and polluted.
BIG BROTHER 1/15/2014 8:41:17 PM Report

Neil received a response to his statements from Harper`s office, something which the opposition parties haven`t managed to accomplish in 4 years.
He is therefore more than merely one voice of dissent.

He is using his own money to convey his message and the message is two-fold, attacking on two fronts. The Tar Sands disaster being one fold. The other fold is the story of the plight of the Natives. They have been left out of the negotiations, dealing with the tar sands.

Has anyone followed the story of St. Ann`s Residential School the past few days. The Federal Government has been stonewalling the Truth and Reconciliation Commission`s access to records from the archives. It took the Supreme Court to force the government to release the documents to the Commission. Why would the government not just release the documents. This is the nature of the issue Neil is donating his money and voice to. Native rights, as they pertain to the Tar Sands, are being trampled. They require funding for legal fees. He is going to help with the funding.

The last major issue Neil took on was the war in Iraq. His album `Living With War`is a complete slam of Bush and his gang of thugs. Another issue that hit home with me. The album is loud and obnoxious (purposefully so, where the screaming somehow is fitting the outrage we all should have been displaying) but the lyrics are straight on.
lookaround 1/15/2014 8:52:15 PM Report

What archives? Harper is burning all books and archives that BELONG TO THE PEOPLE OF CANADA. How dare he touch years of research. Looking at the polls all but Alberta and Saskatchewan have the Liberals leading. With 60,000 jobs lost and the economic lack of confidence for the Canadian dollar the CONS are dragging Canada down month by month. All is sacrificed for the Tar Sands.
flyhawk25 1/15/2014 8:57:50 PM Report

BB...I'll give you this.Your cogent and reasoned analysis of Young's position resonates with me.
What we might need is a high profile angry voice screaming out against this government.Certainly up until now nothing else seems to be getting results.
Often these things come down to perception and image.Stephen Harper does not look like the prince of darkness. In fact he looks like a guy who'd make a nice neighbor.
And that is the biggest problem we face getting dissenting voices 'face time'.
I believe that history will show his administration to be the authors of Canada's demise if the low level thinkers don't get some brains and integrity.
But one only has to read the drivel from the neo-cons on here to realize that we all get to vote and there is no restriction on intelligence in a democratic vote.

The Pope Dies and Goes to Heaven

The Pope dies and, naturally, goes to heaven. He's met by the reception committee and, after a whirlwind tour is told that he can enjoy any of the myriad recreations available.

He decides that he wants to read all of the ancient original text of the Holy Scriptures, and spends the next eon or so learning the languages. After becoming a linguistics master, he sits down in the library and begins to pore over every version of the Bible, working back from the most recent "Easy Reading" to the original script.

All of a sudden there is a scream in the library. The angels come running to him, only to find the Pope huddled in a chair, crying to himself, and muttering, "An 'R'! They left out the 'R'”.

God takes him aside, offering comfort and asks him what the problem is. After collecting his wits, the Pope sobs again, "It's the letter 'R'... the word was supposed to be CELEBRATE."
Bobby Nerves 1/15/2014 9:02:10 PM Report

Another from the Pope:

The Pope Visits America

The Pope just finished a tour of the East Coast and was taking a limousine to the airport. Since he'd never driven a limo, he asked the chauffeur if he could drive for a while. The reluctant chauffeur pulled over along the roadside, climbed into the back of the limo, and the Pope took the wheel. The Pope then merged onto the highway and accelerated to over 90 mph to see what the limo could do.

Suddenly, the Pope noticed the blue light of the State Patrol in his side mirror, so he pulled over. The trooper approached the limo, peered in through the windows, then said, "Just a moment please, I need to call in."

The trooper called in and explained to the chief that he had a very important person pulled over for speeding. "How do I handle this, chief?" asked the trooper. "Is it the Governor?" questioned the chief. "No! This guy is even more important!"

"Is it the President?" asked the chief.

"No! Even more important!"

"Well, who the heck is it?" screamed the chief.

"I don't know, sir," replied the trooper, "but he's got the Pope as his chauffeur."

And the conclusion we are supposed to arrive at is that Harper is not bad by comparison.

Fly,
For the most part, I think Neil just likes to make nice songs. I wouldn`t expect everyone to appreciate his music.

But when he sees an injustice and gets his head around it, he can sure hit home-runs. His hit Ohio is the anti-Vietnam War Anthem.

redranger, very interesting quote, the one you just shared.

The principle is that, we believe in God and the Heaven of the afterlife, then what is Hell; and Hell is just the absence of God.

We all can understand and explain, measure, see and sense light, but what is darkness? Just the absence of light.

You see Statusquo, life could be much easier for you, remember, you can go around in that Armani suit touching here and there, and have many well breasted secretaries...
Think about...

Dear right wing,

Even though I was wrong about the addition of trihalomethanes I really only have two causes:

1. Good Customer Service, and
2. Participatory Democracy (to effect good governance).

It may seem like I have a lot of causes, but the things I pursue are simply precursors to those two overarching goals.

Sincerely and Respectfully,
Mark Brown

P.S. The Running Annual Average of Trihalomethanes in our water is reaching reportable levels (42.5 ug/L) according to page 6 of the PUC's 2012 Annual Water Quality Report ( http://tinyurl.com/qcc3z8t ). It will be interesting to see what the RAA for Trihalomethanes is in the PUC's 2013 Annual Water Quality Report. What do you think is causing the massive increase in Trihalomethanes in our water right wing?
