David Poluck 1/14/2014 7:13:37 AM Report

Good morning!

Was flipping through news stories and I saw this..'Octomom' accused of failing to report income, charged with welfare fraud in California

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Octomom Nadya Suleman did porn films, boxed D-list celebrities, even endorsed birth control for dogs after giving birth in 2009 to eight babies after she received in vitro fertility treatments.

Through it all, she never ran afoul of the law. At least until now.

On Monday, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office announced Suleman has been charged with three counts of welfare fraud.

Authorities say the 38-year-old single mother of 14 children failed to report $30,000 she earned while collecting public assistance money.

Suleman, who was charged Jan. 6, was not immediately taken into custody but was ordered to appear in court on Friday. Prosecutors planned to ask that bail be set at $25,000.

If convicted, she could be sentenced to nearly six years in prison.

Yikes! Six years. If this was something that the federal party leaders had to deal directly with...
How would Steve handle the situation??
How would Justin?
How would Tom?

Good morning everyone, I guess it cooled down enough to tighten up all that slop out there. I was too tired to watch the National last evening but they were going to release the figures on how much Harper has spent advertising a program that doesn't even exist. He certainly doesn't mind whizzing away taxpayer's money trying to convince the public that he is doing something other than being incompetent. This non-existent program sure says it all. Have a great day everyone.

And why would we care?
Grump 1/14/2014 7:41:27 AM Report

David, Good morning, I suspect when they figure out how much it will cost to take care of her 14 children they will decide it's not worth it. Probably should give her a pile of house arrest, she made the problem, let her enjoy it,

atticus; just reading the archives. Yes , they have the sidewalks in very good condition here now too other than a few spots where the banks have fallen down. yesterday you just simply couldn't walk them. Trying to walk two dogs on these snow-narrowed streets is iffy.:).
Wild Turkey 1/14/2014 8:59:39 AM Report

Oh and maybe we will see a return to T.V antennas and get a limited number of channels for free.
Bobby Nerves 1/14/2014 9:08:04 AM Report

Talking sidewalks, there goes the small machine touching up and decorating the sidewalks.

It would be interesting to know how much the city has to pay to settle disputes about people falling on the streets and cars damaged due to pot holes. Any insight on that?

Fly, if Mr. Barsanti has any political intentions, he'll have my support; and not for Crappy Tire, but rather for his managerial approach.

I believe that "you" can do the work yourself (not a friend) and then you need a retest for emissions.

Today's newspaper has a story about how the SAH is asking for ideas on how to spend over one million in surplus but don't list a website just a phone number.
Maybe they should start with 'innovating' a new way to collect ideas.

Didn't know they were testing for emissions here in the north yet. If they are ,I'm glad I don't have a car anymore. That whole business is a licence to steal, have seen how it goes in Southern Ontario...

We'll use the positive viewpoint....good for the SAH for finally getting to use black ink.

How about you check out how much it cost to develop a web page or add programs to existing ones.

flyhawk25 1/14/2014 11:28:45 AM Report

They have the technology and the talent to add that on to existing web-sites.

Protector; I didn't think there was and doubt if there will ever be. They tried it in Sudbury a few years ago but gave up on it for some reason. I think there are just too many people up here that can't afford new cars.....:)

jc: if it was tried in Sudbury, I imagine the power of 'the Bartolucci' put a stop to that. It is all about winning ridings.

He's retired. I can't imagine why the current admin wouldn't extend driveclean to Northern Ontario. Seems fair, really.

@ Bil- the _cat;There isn't the population density up here to cause the pollution like there is down there, also there a re a lot of people up here that simply can't afford new or newer cars. Don't know if you know how it works or not but it is a licence to steal. You take your car in for the test,(maybe 100 bucks) it doesn't pass so they do up to 250 worth of work and out you go,pass or not. Then you have 2 yrs to bring it up to snuff. One month short of 2 yrs you sell the car, then the new owner starts the whole process over again. The whole thing a classic ripoff, same as the book you have to buy to sell a car. Government in

ok I just called the company they told me they only own and rent the tank . The rest belongs to me. Wonder how they run there tank with out a vent . If it needs one then by law it should be up to them to put it in.Yes I no it need a vent . The point is they cant put the tank in with out a vent, So it should be there problem.
Bill_the_Cat 1/14/2014 2:01:10 PM Report

jc: A money grab for certain. That's the problem isn't it in an era of sharply declining government revenue?

I can see both Driveclean implemented and parity with Driver's license fees.

We've already seen some of the GTA MPPs table legislation to normalise insurance rates across the province--a motion that allegedly found favour with Mr Mantha, MPP if I remember correctly. We have nowhere near the fraud/crime/accident rates of the Golden Horseshoe. So who gets screwed in that redistribution of risk?

There have been serious reductions in the Northern Health Travel Grant (all quietly, but the help is gone just the same). We found that out when child 2 spent a month in Sick Kids.

Every Ministry is facing efficiency cuts. Good to a point, but the lure of increasing/equalising fees is hard to resist.

I hope I'm wrong, but Bartolucci was a moderating northern voice with a great deal of influence at Queens Park.

Who now?

Bobby Nerves 1/14/2014 2:04:37 PM Report

Two things:
You can use a ventless natural gas heater. At your own risk. The device exists and it's legal.

They provide a myriad of tanks, electric, LPG and natural gas, but you have to provide whatever is required further than bring the tank in and connect it, more or less.

No vent, no tank. You have a choice, at least.
bounder 1/14/2014 2:15:21 PM Report

Wouldn't that show up on the vehicle registration, as uncertified till that correction is made, by the new owner.
Prometheus 1/14/2014 2:44:21 PM Report

Re the changes in the Northern Health Travel Grant.

Bobby Nerves 1/14/2014 3:09:55 PM Report

If your vehicle must pass a test, load the highest octane gas you can find and go to the highway 20 or 30 km. speed a bit and get the engine nice an hot. You should be OK. If it doesn't pass the test there are garages that know exactly what could be wrong and they will force the test... that's in TO, of course.

There is one device that you have to block and the car will pas with flying colours.
soowat 1/14/2014 3:16:49 PM Report

I may need to apply for this Grant in the next while. Is there a web site to which you could refer me? Thanks in advance
Just Curious 1/14/2014 3:38:35 PM Report

Bounder,it does but the new owner just has to repeat the same process and he's good for two more years. It only kicks you in the gonads if you keep the vehicle for a long time. And the thing is, it's the same as a safety check. If you know someone who will fudge things a bit you are good to go. I used to have a guy that would safety an ownership without ever seeing the vehicle, just took my word as to condition.. We won't have to worry about it for a while in the north...:)

KENNEDY919 1/14/2014 4:50:41 PM Report

The Chamber of Commerce letter from its President gave me a bit of a chuckle in his analogy of re-igniting the spirit of innovation of Francis Clergue that made the Sault what it is today. Can you imagine someone like Clergue trying to start up a paper mill industry in this city today.
First he must get the approval of the First Nations for any development. How much money will it take to buy First Nation approval? Then as a non-Saultite he would have to go to Council and get approval from all the neighbours for the development in their neighbourhood. If approved he would have to budget for all the site plan accomadations to keep the neighbour's happy.(Berms,Traffic Plan Studies.Engineering Soil tests etc.)
Then will MOE be on board with all the air and water quality emissions inherent with any Paper mill.
He would then have to question why his energy rates would be so high due to the subsidization of all this green energy around him even though there is cheap local hydro-electricity in abundance. American energy rates five minutes away are significantly cheaper.
Once he hires a work force he must now deal with the start up of a union which can strike and close him down with each labour contract that expires.
Seniority rules over merit.
Besides the Unions he must deal with all the government redtape from WSIB,Minister of Labour,Employee Health tax,MNR and Human Rights.
The variable strength of the Canadian dollar is something that can not be predicted or controlled. Winter costs in a Northern climate must be considered as the highways close often hampering the transportation of raw materials in and product to the marketplace. The rail system has deteriorated to a point where major upgrades are needed to allow the trains to travel at decent speeds. Talk of a Deep Sea Harbour will continue as industries close up or leave town.
Besides all these hurdles you must then deal with banks, insurance companies
and all the tree huggers who never had to make payroll in their life.
The Sault is a tough sell for economic development particularly when you compare our hurdles with the American business climate.Sadly I do not see any Francis Clergue's in the near horizon.

I understand that the Q interview with Neil is to be shown on tomorrow's "National". It shows a departure for the usually right-leaning CBC!!(IA) and if Justin has his wits bout him he'll court Neil to be a Liberal candidate. It's time for Neil to come home. What better than a northern Ontario riding. When I announced to my U.K. friends (back in '75) that I was emigrating and that I'd be married in northern Ontario, nearly everyone broke into the lyrics of "Helpless Helpless", an absolutely iconic song. It might even stir the heart-string of a Wisen or rw ... maybe not! Neil would be shoo in and might even land a cabinet post.

I've turned my life around as a New Year's resolution promise to myself.
So far so good.
I opened an account with a reputable broker and liquidated all my RRSPs and converted them to stock options at the TSX. (thank you Wisenheimer)
I blocked the CBC and CNBC and exclusively watch FOX News and a couple of Porn channels pay per stroke...sorry...view....per VIEW channels.
I've also embraced Jesus and I shall give HIM another chance.
Reading the Bible is also on my list of priorities.
I like the Old Testament far better than that wishy-washy love and forgiveness crap of the sequel. The Old Testament has some kick ass passages from a real God and more than a few descriptions of sodomy and other assorted sexual deviations... a white, republican, vengeful, angry and rather insecure God. Not unlike Chuck Heston on a bad day. But hey, He speaks English!
I must admit I am a better person now...however the diet is a bitch. My food is exclusively from Walmart now and my stools are runny and the other day I almost choked on a wishbone from the rotisserie chicken.
Prometheus 1/14/2014 7:45:33 PM Report

Soowat: Re the NHTG. The answer provided by Bill the Cat is the same source document I used.

Based on my experience, I recommend keeping detailed records of absolutely everything you spend on gas, meals, tips, parking, taxis, accommodation, etc. If you are fortunate enough to pay income tax (humour), you can claim the difference between what you actually spent (with receipts) and the amount reimbursed under the NHTG on your tax return under medical expenses. If you do not pay income tax then it comes out of your pocket.

Since the NHTG system now requires original receipts for accommodation, try to get a duplicate copy of the accommodation receipt. Otherwise, you may need to get certified copies for your records and the tax returns.

Religion and a belief in God is for people with moral and ethical, unresolved issues. See Mother Theresa...a despicable human being cloaked in the veneer of goodness. (details upon request).
Also, genetics, social circumstance and mental health play a determinant factor .
It can be beneficial for some but mostly it's an artificial crutch to assist in behaving like a decent human being.
A decent human being does not need religion of any sort. A decent human being looks out for the immediate needs of the people he/she can touch. In my realm that amounts to three! If you think beyond that number in a substantial're delusional!
Religion as myth to guide you is fine...Religion as fact is reason to incarcerate you and beat you with a stick until you come to your senses.
