@lookaround, thanks for letting me know what is actually happening on the streets of the oil sands. It's just not right that there are more Phillipinos and people from Manilla in the oil patch working at half wages when there are Canadians like your neighbor's son being laid off from doing the exact same work there. A million net new jobs my a**.

@mallet, you are what I would call a Proressive Conservative, not a Neo-Con like Harper.

Your suggested reforms are good ones IMHO:

* Big employers HAVE to have a reasonable per centage of apprentices(Canadians) to trades people.

* The practice of going overseas to get trades should be stopped if the employer does not have apprentices through years 1 to 4.

* the way employers discriminate against people due to age, should be stopped,

* unreasonable qualifications like being required to speak and read mandarin as a condition of work should be outlawed,

* and of course wage structures should be in line with industry norms... a fair days work for a fair days pay.

I'm wondering why Harper does NOTHING about your ideas to address the realities in the oil sands that lookaround has pointed out?

It certainly seems that Harper is selling off our natural resources and jobs to foreign countries.
If so he's either jaded, stupid or corrupt.
Why is it?
theprotector 1/13/2014 8:09:14 AM Report

Hayes, why does my daugher and granddaughter have to sell their very nice home to move to Toronto and live in a scuzzy apartment to keep her job? She cannot afford house down there yet if she wants to keep working she has to dramatically change her lifestyle and become part of the working poor!
Why is this happening? Why are you letting this happen? Why do you want this to happen to people in your area? Do you not wish to have a chance in the upcoming election? Why dont you care about the people and families in this city? Shame on you!
Wild Turkey 1/13/2014 8:28:49 AM Report

Harper thinks we have achieved the rank of World Class Oil Producer.
His "People" looked at Kuwait, Bahrain,
The Emirates, and the other OPEC countries as a good model to follow. He should join them. but it would really piss off our American friends.
So why not follow Norway's model,so that all Canadians benefit? What's the rush?
Take the time to train Canadian workers, pay a decent wage, and set up a Heritage Fund for our future.
These current practices show no plan at all.Like every other Government Dept.,the energy portfolio is completely mis-managed and incompetent.

BIG BROTHER 1/13/2014 9:51:25 AM Report

Fly,
I would be surprised if Neil Young has done drugs since the '70's. Part of the schism he had with CSN was over lifestyle. Neil was busy producing, while his cohorts carried on with the party. Check out his repertoire of work. He has been prolific, writing and producing records. He also has two children with cerebral palsy and he is very active in their lives. This doesn't leave him much time for the drug scene.

Neil is a very appropriate spokesman for anti oil sands development. He is a proud Canadian with roots in Western Canada. Although old, his music appeals across the age spectrum, giving him a voice among the youth. He is still very much an activist and likely has access to more board rooms than Harper, himself.
right wing 1/13/2014 10:21:28 AM Report

Hahahaha...no drugs since the 70's....surprise.

Young did an extensive interview with the NYTimes in 2012, he stated he had been sober for just over a year.

"Neil Young is the latest in a long line of celebrities to hit the media and talk about his battle with drug and alcohol abuse. In an interview with New York Times Magazine, Young talked about how he has given up drinking and smoking marijuana in recent years after a doctor encouraged him to do so when he confessed that his brain had "endured many youthful pharmaceutical adventures."

Says Young: "I did [drugs and alcohol] for 40 years. Now I want to see what it's like to not do it."

"Sitting with Young in his bus after the show as he ate a salad and drank lemonade - he's been sober for a year, the first time in decades that he has worked without drinking or smoking pot."

Yes young is a great spokesman...well perhaps for "pharmaceutical adventures."
BIG BROTHER 1/13/2014 10:36:57 AM Report

Google is a wonderful thing.

Well, I am surprised at this rw. He has still been more prolific (for many years) than the average singer/songwriter. And I still give him more credibility than Harper on just about any topic.
Wild Turkey 1/13/2014 10:48:02 AM Report

I was quite surprised when I viewed Steven Harper's performances on U tube.I have long been a fan of Rock'n'roll.I'm a great air guitar player and singer of Completely incoherent lyrics. What surprised Me about Steven Harper's performance, was a Rolling Stone song--Jumpin' Jack Flash. He had a really tight back-up band, and In my opinion did an excellent job.
The Rolling Stones ,particularly Kieth have a long history of drug use.But Mr. Harper looked past that and honored the song, not the singer.
One of the Stone's obscure songs is titled"It's The Singer, Not The Song"
Maybe we should respect Neil Young as a great artist and a voice for reason, even if we don't agree with him.
right wing 1/13/2014 10:52:54 AM Report

B.B.

I thought Neil's drug and alcohol abuse was pretty much common knowledge.
I am not surprised that a lefty would highly value the opinions of a pot smoking, heavy drinking, hippie musician, it fits in perfectly with your ideologies.
BIG BROTHER 1/13/2014 11:02:19 AM Report

rw,
If you read the article, you'd see that even the authors were surprised. It didn't affect his productivity. He was prolific. He wasn't someone we read about over the years as an alcohol/drug abuser. In other words, it didn't control his life; he had control, for the most part.

And yes, I'll take his lead before Harper's, Trudeau's or Mulcair's.

Really B.B., I know we have our differences but please tell me that you are not that naive or dumb.
Neil Young said himself that sobriety was something very strange as he had to get to know who he really is as a sober person.
You statement shows a real ignorance of what addiction is all about.

soowat

I don't hold much regard for many of these musicians, actors and such that use their celebrity status to come off as some sort of be all, end all, experts.
Of course they are entitled to their opinions but there are those groupies that just hang on every word and lap up every statement as gospel.
The award shows had to put a muzzle on it all as the " this is my cause" grandstanding was eating up all the air time.
If they did not have the gift of singing or acting and the status that goes with it what would their opinion be worth....the same as the next average person.
right wing 1/13/2014 11:54:22 AM Report

Correction: "Your statement"
theprotector 1/13/2014 12:01:11 PM Report

thats true so why not use your status to further your cause? Only makes sence does it not? It has nothing to do with groupies and what not it has to do with using media to take advantage of getting the word out in a manner that will benefit the cause. Nothing wrong with that...
Jimssm 1/13/2014 12:02:50 PM Report

So Neil Young's opinions are to be discarded because is/was addicted but Rob Ford is good to be the Mayor of Canada's largest city ?
BIG BROTHER 1/13/2014 12:11:16 PM Report

If he was truly addicted, he wouldn't be able to just walk away from these substances. And he may not be doing just that, but the article sure reads that way. Do you not understand what addiction is? Methinks it is you who are truly naive.

We have not read about car crashes or wife beatings, while under the influence. Actually, he has done more for humanity than Harper.

I happen to agree with most of his causes and support him because he has the money and influence to actually cause attention to be paid to those same causes.

Zing, I was a little offended by that remark also but the point was that by demanding the doubling of wages it is hastening the takeover by robotic means and will result in more job losses.

I also know people who must resort to the low paying jobs and I don't regard them as dullards. It's just an indication of the way our society is deteriorating when all the good jobs are disappearing. It's the giant sucking sound that Ross Perot warned us about.
flyhawk25 1/13/2014 2:14:55 PM Report

Two lovely indictments of both the rail industry and Alberta's destruction of habitat to get at oil sources.
The tank car leasing firms have known about the issue of outdated tank cars for three years and done nothing.I'm assuming they're waiting for a government subsidy.
But Alberta's destruction of habitat was done with the full knowledge of the politicians.
So much for governments meddling in free enterprise. There's a pattern there and it does not meet the smell test.

Flyhawk..

I see that the Canadian Banks are going along with the FATCA for those dual citizens of the US of A. I had a neighbour a few years back who was caught in that muddle. Just another rule made by Lawyers for Lawyers and Tax Accountants, this must be the future job for people that governments are trying to solve the unemployment problems with. What upsets me is that this is a sledge hammer to crack a walnut sized problem, but no mention is made of corporations which trade in one country but register in another. The U K has tried to get a handle on that problem but so far seems stymied by different country rules and regs. The other thing is why should the banks be the Revenues Dept policeman, surely the State Dept has the passport information of the US citizens they want to catch, and they already have legislation in place to track deposit amounts over a certain amount!!
Zing 1/13/2014 2:41:08 PM Report

We have a steel plant which produces plate steel right here in the Soo. Why not make upgraded tanker cars here too?
BIG BROTHER 1/13/2014 3:01:04 PM Report

Ahem...

There is a difference between using and abusing.

Besides, it's all moot. I still trust him more than Harper. He's using his own money to fight for his cause. Harper is using my money to fight for his cause. That should make a significant difference, even to you. Or, it should. But, it's called integrity, a quality sorely lacking with Harper and his base.

And here I am, pushing that string uphill, once more.
mallet 1/13/2014 3:08:36 PM Report

Zing..

A very simple answer, we do not have a facility that makes tanker cars, the cost to ship plate to the facility that makes them is cheaper than building a plant here as it already exists. This is a rather specialised company and the rate for repair/renew is probably as limited as for rail track that Algoma used to produce, but for which there was a limited market. Also where would you build such a facility, could be out the west end somewhere I suppose, unless some "NIMBY's" would object rather have "green solar panels" they do not make noise after all. (sorry could not resist that)
BIG BROTHER 1/13/2014 3:44:04 PM Report

Fly,
Neither one is an expert in their given cause. They likely select the experts they would follow. I'll take David Suzuki over Rush Limbaugh, thank you. Heston was likely being reimbursed for his endorsement of the NRA cause. Neil is using his celebrity status and his own money.
Zing 1/13/2014 4:07:07 PM Report

The tank car industry can't keep up with demand the way it is right now. They're doing retrofits, reconditioning, and manufacturing....there is a three year wait for cars.
I bet Essar could cash in...hey they can use my backyard so long as we get some people back to work.

Just Curious 1/13/2014 4:21:41 PM Report

Lots of places on Essar property that could be utilized for building tank cars, lots of empty buildings with rail access. The only problem I can see would be that the noise would keep the older employees at Essar awake during their shifts....:)

And Steely, don't get me wrong. I worked for Stone and Webster years ago at the plant and the word was get your steel you needed for the night or do without. You couldn't find anyone awake or make any noise in the steel dept after 9 o'clock. Went in once and got chewed out like crazy..Friend of mine walked around for 2 days with a bale of gloves in one hand and a clip board in the other looking for an outboard motor for his boat. Used to be 3 guys on duty in the old rail mill, two to work and one to cook supper.. Don't try to tell me that wasn't the way it was, I was there. When I worked for Steel City hauling steel out of the plant, if you wanted a pop out of a locked fridge they put out a call for the guy with the key on the intercom.. That was his friggin' job at the plant, to unlock the machine, get you a pop, and go back to sleep..Worked for Total Weld on weekends at the plant.. Our job was to be there to do the work the on-duty welder that worked for the plant didn't want to do in case he might have to get dirty.. Our trucks went in empty every morning and came out every night loaded to the ass with supplies. The employees at the plant were their own worst enemies...
